Universal credit managed migration thread

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

If I get a lump sum from work in one pay packet above my wage can I put this into my work pension and is this ok for uc?

catrescuelady · 14/10/2023 20:13

Sorry if this has been asked but noticed on my notice letter it says log into move to UC, well I just logged onto making a UC claim. They didn't mention migrating. Have I done it wrong or is it all the same. Confused

Rummikub · 14/10/2023 20:16

I asked this qn on my journal and I got a reply that said my application has a banner across the top that says migrating. I did the same and went to UC claim on line.

You can put it in your pension but if it is part of your wage before you do that they will probably view that as income.

Rummikub · 15/10/2023 13:04

Ok thank you. It was just a one off cost of living type payment to employees but the timing was just as I was migrating

stargaze2 · 15/10/2023 13:20

I'm moving over to universal and wondered if anyone knows what happens about NHS exemption when you do? I currently have it due to being on tax credits, will this be migrated over also as well or does it stop all together? I've heard that not everyone on universal is entitled to it

Unless they have changed recently, then if you have earnings of under £935 a month ( if you have kids on your UC claim ) or £435 a month ( if you don't have kids) then you will get free NHS prescriptions etc.

Thank you @starpatch.
I have read I will need to take evidence that I am gainfully self employed.
Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could take please?

I used my website with a domain in business name, work email, content I produce for clients, invoices, testimonials, my social media accounts. Plus tax return/UTR. I didn't have to show it all, just enough to show that I am "gainfully" self-employed.

stargaze2 · 15/10/2023 13:50

Thank you @Babyroobs, that's really helpful. I'm going to apply for universal next week and wasn't sure how it works

Stremingservice · 15/10/2023 14:19

I migrated back in September and Friday was the date I was supposed to get my 1st statement.

When I logged on it said £0 and I realised it had not taken my 2 children into account and it also said I had a 'spare bedroom'.

I definitely added my 2 when I set it up, and in the time waiting I had not been asked to add anything to my journal.

I phoned up and they said they couldn't help but to put something on my journal- which I have done. Does anyone know how quickly this can be resolved? Tuesday is the planned payment date and it couldn't have come soon enough.

Had this happened to anyone else?

Elements often get missed off but seems odd if you definitely added the children when you made the claim. I'm really not sure whether they would need to ' verify' the children for a migration claim in the same way that they do for a normal new Uc claim. If they do need to verify them ( see proof of child benefit or birth certificates etc) then it is going to take longer then if they don't. is there definitely nothing on your ' to do' list ?

Stremingservice · 15/10/2023 14:52

No nothing on my to-do list at all and there has been nothing all along.

Just hoping this can be sorted quickly. Does anybody know how quickly journals are replied too? I phone and wrote my journal entry all before 9am on Friday.

Wish I had screen shotted my application now.

All the things you put in your application should be documented in your journal so you should be able to see whether you definitely reported you had kids ( if this gives you peace of mind ! ). It's variable how long it takes for journal messages to be replied to depending how busy your case manager is. Did you put your journal message under ' payments' as this tends to go straight to your case manager. If no -one has replied by tomorrow I would ring them again and ask them to pass a message on to your case manager urgently as you are in financial hardship. Hope it all gets sorted quickly.

How do pension contributions affect UC? I pay £70 a month so take home £930. Will I lose out for contributing to a pension?

AutumnCrow · 15/10/2023 16:41

@benefitstaxcredithelp Would it be better for your family if you registered as the carer; and your DH relied on his disability status to not have onerous work conditions placed upon him, as it sounds like he could be eligible to claim LCWRA?

(Sorry if I've got that completely arse about face. I'm familiar with PIP, but UC fries my brain.)

Uc deductions for earnings are calculated on net pay after tax, NI and pension contributions have been deducted. So no you don't lose out at all for paying into a pension, you actually benefit more than someone who does not pay into a pension.

What about personal pension contributions outside of salary?
I asked o ym journal and was told pension contributions aren't taken into account.

I find it confusing. Do they mean not deducted from earnings or not counted as earnings by that.

I don't know about that, I guess you would have to report it but imagine there must be a limit on it.

I found this about pension contributions

https://www.entitledto.co.uk/help/pension-contributions

Enter it where? In the journal? I'll be getting a few hundred as a bonus that will only be worth one hundred to me after taxes and UC reduction. Wondering if putting it in my pension will save it.

catrescuelady · 16/10/2023 12:21

Confused. Full time carer to my disabled son. Self employed doing work when I can but work from home. Have UTR, do tax returns. Blah blah blah. Been called for interview to see if I am gainfully self employed.

Bromptotoo · 16/10/2023 12:35

@catrescuelady does your son get PIP DL/DLA C at a leat Mid Rate and are you caring at least 35 hours a week?

Reason I'm asking is that I'm not convinced you can be gainfully self employed if you qualify for the Carer Element which you would if yes is answer to both questions.

Yes I care for him over the 35 hours. My self employed work I do while he is at school. It's never been a problem on tax credits. As it's a migration I thought the rules would be the same.
