Universal credit managed migration thread

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

I'm quite scared about being moved over. My son gets pip and I'm his appointee. I'm assuming the pip won't effect my claim as its his money? I do at present get tax credits for him though . I also gey DLA for my younger child. Is this effected. I get care allowance? Does this have an effect . My understanding is i willl be worse of than I am now 😔

Is child maintenance taken into account?

JanglyBeads · 06/10/2023 12:50

It might just be an allowance for the Christmas /New Year break though, not a move to 4 months' notice?

starpatch · 06/10/2023 15:05

Yes its all quite stressful many of us are single mums and negotiating this on our own. Would appreciate if you would back off.

Barleymilk · 06/10/2023 17:25

I'm a single mum and trying to negotiate all this before I receive the letter. The anxiety is through the roof.
Son turned 16 last week and got his dla letter saying he now must claim but he doesn't want to. Says he no longer has autism and can manage. Ok I said, not a problem at all, knowing quite well he does but that would make him angry so I'll leave it. So now I wonder if I tell tax credits or just hope that when i get my three months they just finish my claim? I will owe a little from the disability element?
I'm self employed,I'm a house keeper and work around 22 hours for 8 clients.. But tax credits allowed me to have some days off in the holidays . I'd get to work at 7 so I could be home for him at 12,when often he would be sitting in bed asking where I've been.
Luckily I own my little 3 bed Victorian terrace.
I have an estate agent coming next week as I think I will need to downsize to a 2 bed ( elder two children have moved out).
Sons dad never has overnight, just picks up for a few hours at weekend.
I've known this was coming and have saved 7k,for a car in the future or boiler etc.
Opened a sipp a few years ago as no pension apart from state. 8k in there.
I'm grateful for the tax credits but I don't think I will apply for UC, what if my clients are on holiday and dont want me one week?
I'm a trained nursey nurse so now applying for evening nanny jobs, son will just have to get on. So yes,its all a bit scary.
I've not bothered to date as that's expensive! Going out for coffee and meals and buying them birthday and Christmas presents.

The issue you may have is if your son no longer has a disability benefit in place because he won't apply for PIP, you cannot be classed as a carer so UC may expect you to be looking for full time work.

Barleymilk · 06/10/2023 18:47

Thanks Babyroobs. I've never claimed carers allowance as I earnt more than the £120 I think it is for a week?
I was just hoping for tax credits to continue until son was out of education and not so dependent.
Anyway,I'm prepared,I'm certainly not work shy. The last year I've upped my hours and I will continue to do so.
Will DLA notify tax credits that from the end of October son wont get receive dla,I wonder if you know? I got my warning pamphlet last week so letter imminent. Will my tax credits just shut down. I'm thinking I keep some money back for any overpayment.

I think you would need to let tax credits know that your son's DLA has stopped. You may well still get some child tax credits, you would just lose the child disability premium of tax credits if the DLA stops. Yes I think if you don't claim UC your tax credits will just end.

Brotherlove · 07/10/2023 18:04

Wise UC peeps...
On managed migration, if TC are due twice in November - 2nd & 30th, and one must apply for UC in first week of December, what is the best date to apply on please?
Will it create an overpayment that will need paying back to TC if both payments in November are paid?
Thanks!

Bemyclementine · 07/10/2023 19:10

I applied a few days after my TC payment . It's takes just over 5 weeks to process the UC claim and payment be made. So the UC credit claim will start after the tc claim ends.

blueripple · 08/10/2023 08:26

@Brotherlove I started my UC claim a couple of weeks after my final TC payment and have ended up with an overpayment. They sent me a final award notice saying that upto that date my award should be £X but they had already paid me £X+400 so I have an overpayment of £400 to pay back. I assumed it would be taken back from my UC but the lad I saw in the jobcentre wasn't sure that would happen as they are 2 different systems so I am going to wait until I get the breakdown of my first payment and see if they take any back from there and if not then I guess I contact TC. It really wasn't made clear in the final award notice what would happen about the overpayment.

Tumbleweed101 · 09/10/2023 17:26

So I'm in the middle of my migration period. Just found out what I will get paid and it's significantly more than when I was on TC as I wasn't claiming HB. I'm quite pleased and relieved as I've been worried about the transfer for ages.

Rummikub · 09/10/2023 18:02

That’s good!

When I put my figures into entitled to it worked out less for me unfortunately.

Teado · 09/10/2023 18:44

I’ll be coming off TC on 31/8/24 when DS (18 in January) will be off to university. My other kids are now independent adults.

I definitely won’t be entitled to any UC from August 2024 as a lone adult with no dependents/disabilities. Fair enough. Quite right.

I’m hoping they just let people like me roll off TC naturally next August. If I got my migration letter tomorrow, I’d get UC from Feb 2024 - Aug 2024, it just seems like a poor use of time and resources.

My current TC award is £11 per week. I’d get a tiny bit more on UC but the faff isn’t worth it tbh.

Rummikub · 09/10/2023 19:02

I thought that but I’m having to migrate.

Me too, DS is year 13

EmeraldFox · 09/10/2023 19:20

I wonder what decides the order of who migrates first?

It would be good to know. Seems so arbitrary. Hartlepool today, Solihull tomorrow, Aberystwyth next week type thing.

Similarly with age of my youngest & TCs would have ended then.
I had my migration letter in July for early October, which was in line with the published areas.

megletthesecond · 10/10/2023 07:13

For anyone who provides bank statements, does that mean the migration takes longer? I have six accounts they'll have to go through, I can't imagine that will be quick and my UC will be delayed.

Chasingsquirrels · 10/10/2023 07:39

I applied last week and have multiple bank accounts.
I had a message on my account very quickly with an appointment for 7 days later requiring evidence.
From postings above they are looking to confirm the balances on the application date.
The appointment will take longer with multiple accounts than with 1 account, but I'd assume that they just agree each one off and then that's done.

No, they just confirmed balances at the appointment, they didn't go through anything

megletthesecond · 10/10/2023 08:08

Thanks chasing. That doesn’t sound too bad.

babythinktwice · 10/10/2023 11:12

Hi. Sorry if this has been asked. I am self employed. Presently I keep my accounts on paper. (I am looking into using quick books etc but don’t need to this year.)

Will UC just ask me to work out my income each month. ie what I take, minus costs that month and pension contributions? Do they ask for proof? Would they be content with paper receipts, invoices etc? Would I have to physically take them somewhere to be checked?

I’ve been anxious about this change!

Any help would be great!

Bromptotoo · 10/10/2023 11:19

You'll need to report your income/outgoings for the business at the end of each Assessment Period. Here is what the DWP themselves say:

https://www.gov.uk/self-employment-and-universal-credit

or from an advice sector perspective:

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/on-universal-credit/how-universal-credit-payments-work-if-youre-self-employed/

In practical terms I think you have to 'suck it and see' but for most people it's reasonably straightforward.

babythinktwice · 10/10/2023 15:32

@Bromptotoo thank you. That’s really helpful, I hadn’t thought to check citizens advice!
