Half of DPs wages are taxed

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 09:32

My DS got paid his first month of his new salary yesterday. Which was eleven thousand euro he go taxed half of that which only left us with only 5500 as his monthly pay. The tax is system is disgusting in the country I live in. Even with that wage it's difficult to get by these days with the cost of everything.

poor sausage

you should see if you qualify for benefits - how will you survive on what he brought in, do you have a job?

Reugny · 21/04/2023 09:34

Your son??

3WildOnes · 21/04/2023 09:36

My heart bleeds. How will you possibly survive on €5500 a month.
Move to the US?

Reality · 21/04/2023 09:37

He gets paid that much and didn’t know how the tax system works?

Crikey.

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 09:41

No my fiancés wage. We knew he got taxed a lot but it's a shock to see it on paper. We live in Ireland. He's the only earner in our household. We have two children and are trying to save for a house whilst renting. It's really not a lot.

When you have higher taxes, you generally have better healthcare and social care, schooling etc.

Excuse 5500 euros is not much - best you go and get a job then

toodledo · 21/04/2023 09:45

I think you've come to the wrong platform to complain about this

Unfortunately not the case in Ireland. Many people pay for private health cover on top of this.

You even have to pay for your own bin collections!

justcantgetenough · 21/04/2023 09:48

5500 a month! And your struggling 😂 some people get that a year. I hope your not being serious

Goodoccasionallypoor · 21/04/2023 09:48

@summerfinn

Are you from Ireland? Is this your partner's first time working there?

Crabwoman · 21/04/2023 09:49

OP. This topic is primarily used by those who are on the bones of their arse and having to choose between feeding themselves or heating their home.

Just a warning, but I don’t think complaining of take-home pay circa. £4850 for a single income will land very well at the moment.

Your DP needs to start learning about taxation, and you may need to start learning how to read a room.

BringItOnxxx · 21/04/2023 09:53

Move to tax haven? I here the Cayman islands are nice at this time of year.

Have you only just realised how the tax system in your country works? Were the deductions a big shock to you?

Dyrne · 21/04/2023 09:57

Look, I’m sorry your DF is stupid enough to not understand the basics of tax efficiency; but on the bright side, it doesn’t seem to have stopped him earning a decent wage.

You might want to introduce him to this new fangled thing called “google”; plus this magic wizard they call an “accountant”.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/04/2023 10:03

Exactly @Dyrne

I am always amazed how these things apparently come as a surprise to people who've qualified and successfully interviewed for such a high paying job.

Imagine having 'only' 5500 euros a month to live on. How on earth will you manage? Hmm

romdowa · 21/04/2023 10:05

5 grand a month even in Ireland is a good wage. 2 grand on rent , 1 grand savings . That leaves you with other 2 grand for bills and food. You've no childcare costs since you don't work. So tbh you've little to be complaining about

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 21/04/2023 10:05

That is the way it works, the more you get paid the more tax you pay.

He can look into things like increasing his pension contributions to reduce his taxable pay, a financial advisor would be able to offer suggestions. Ultimately though he is a high tax payer so will pay high tax.

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 10:06

CindersAgain · 21/04/2023 09:43

Our healthcare system is a joke we pay for private health insurance. Otherwise we would be left sitting in a chair in hospital dying to see a doctor. Our childcare is the highest in Europe. I wouldn't mind but we don't get anything good back at all.

literalviolence · 21/04/2023 10:07

He's a high earner. It's right that he pays more tax. How much is your rent if you're not able to save? Can you get a job one day at the weekend to boost savings? When will the kids start school? It is harder to both work when they are pre school because childcare can eat all the wages. That will change though.

Dorisbonson · 21/04/2023 10:08

Agree the tax system sucks and 50% is too much. Its a shame that higher earners get screwed but they are an easy target (and there is little sympathy from many).

It would be nice if the likes of Amazon and Google paid fair taxes.

The state also needs to persuade and support people to retrain from low paid roles into new better paid higher demand occupations. It wont suit everyone but would help if more people earned more and then needed less state support and could pay more tax
