Half of DPs wages are taxed

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 09:32

My DS got paid his first month of his new salary yesterday. Which was eleven thousand euro he go taxed half of that which only left us with only 5500 as his monthly pay. The tax is system is disgusting in the country I live in. Even with that wage it's difficult to get by these days with the cost of everything.

If you were married he’d be paying less tax it’s the first 49k euro at 20% if you’re married with only one spouse earning. I’d have a quick ceremony at local registry office and something fancier later on.

Dodgeitornot · 21/04/2023 10:24

I get you, esp as the social, medical and everything else system in Ireland is so poor. Not much value for money. However, you're on the wrong forum and will get slated here.

kirinm · 21/04/2023 10:26

Have Ireland got higher rates of tax than the UK because I take home 4k a month and so not get paid anything like £11k gross a month.

whats your salary?

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 10:27

I wouldn't consider us rich. Yes we drive a Mercedes but it's not brand new. It's a couple of years old. Maybe I am being stupid . But we don't drink or smoke or go out anywhere fancy. Our focus is on doing things with the children, buying them what they need and having our rented home comfortable with nice things we have purchased. We eat organic food but cook ourselves 99percent of the time. We haven't gone abroad since 2019 . I'm not here to rub it in . I merely think it's unfair that my DP who works in the tech industry all his life and has worked his way up is taxed that much . That's all. Money is relative

Twinedpeaks · 21/04/2023 10:27

The most your DP/DS can have been taxed is 40% so you're missing €1000 somewhere - his pension I'm guessing, so not tax.

A monthly wage of 11000 is an annual salary of €132,000. Get a grip.

kirinm · 21/04/2023 10:28

@Tealsofa £70k (pounds not euros - I'm in England)

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/04/2023 10:28

Your not middle income earners!
you go work to bump up your income!
why didn’t you buy a house before you had children?

Im loving the mentality though- the country is on its knees how dare you tax my husband, oh and then my fav line “we works really hard”.

don’t like tax, drop your income and enjoy!

Gondala · 21/04/2023 10:29

From what PP's have said, he isn't actually taxed that much so your problem is totally made up. You need to figure out if it is going into his pension or if he is hiding massive sums of money, which I agree would be a real life problem, addiction, second family ect.

kirinm · 21/04/2023 10:30

I'm confused by the calculation. Ireland doesn't have a flat rate of 50% tax.

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/04/2023 10:30

As you are presumably both Irish you do have the option, and it sounds as though your DP has the skills, to go anywhere in the EU to live and work. There's bound to be a more favourable tax regime somewhere amongst the member states.

We are hardly going to just drop down to a lower income are we😂. It may not have been exactly half of wages taxes but in and around. I'm not the high earner it's my DP so slagging off my intelligence is a low blow.

He's taxed 40% so get your facts straight first of all. He knew the tax rate didn't he?
If you are scrimping and saving on his take home salary then either you are doing something seriously wrong or you need to start working too. Depriving your kids of holidays etc...why?? You can't have nothing at the end of the month.

Yes I think you are being silly.

24KaratCucumber · 21/04/2023 10:33

Stupid or not, this is a ridiculous comment on this board of Mumsnet.

You're driving a couple year old mercedes, other people are starving to a point of ill health.

There isn't a cost of living crisis, it's a wealth distribution crisis.
Tory government say an adult can exists on £343 a month. (Which I think is going up soon)
Meanwhile people getting £5k a month complain they haven't been abroad for 2 years.

they should take more from the £5k a month and gave it to the £343 a month - I know it's a silly thing to type and no one would agree before someone jumps on me.

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/04/2023 10:33

Holidays abroad are not a right. Plenty of people don't have them. If you feel you cannot save money then you need to look at your expenditure and budget. Could you move somewhere cheaper to rent?

OMG12 · 21/04/2023 10:34

You should go out to work.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 21/04/2023 10:35

Well a quick google suggests that for high earners, England pays more tax than Ireland, but Scotland pays more than that.
As a Scot we get free prescriptions - but no GPS to write them; we get a free bus pass at 60, but there’s no buses after 7pm or on Sundays near me. I could go on.
Scotland really is on its knees, so I understand that paying taxes for poor government really grates, but it should not be a race to the bottom.

emmathedilemma · 21/04/2023 10:35

CindersAgain · 21/04/2023 09:43

When you have higher taxes, you generally have better healthcare and social care, schooling etc.

LOL you clearly don't know much about Ireland!!

Ravageur · 21/04/2023 10:35

Oh give over

Tealsofa · 21/04/2023 10:36

kirinm · 21/04/2023 10:28

@Tealsofa £70k (pounds not euros - I'm in England)

according to the Salary Calculator (no weird deductions etc)
you should take home £ 4,137.45

How can an adult live on 343 a month, my gas and electric is more than that a month.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/04/2023 10:38

Op, on searching your username o see this is not actually about Tax, is it?

It's about the fact you want to have as much money as possible to buy a house sooner and away from your dad.
You are living with him, I imagine for a decent rate rent whilst you save. You're husband is working to 11pm to get a promotion and then I imagine seeing his payslip is a blow because it's hindered your chances to move sooner.

Just move to another rental. You don't owe your dad anything and it takes away the urgent of saving for somewhere to buy.

ShowUs · 21/04/2023 10:38

I don’t know what the rules are in Ireland but would it not benefit you to both work part time?

It seems you’d still have a similar income and there will also be a much better work/life balance.

kirinm · 21/04/2023 10:38

@Tealsofa I have deductions for benefits (as in work benefits not government benefits). I'm not sure what your point is anyway. I'm not complaining about my salary. I'm questioning the OP's maths and / or truthfulness.

WOW. I don't even know where to START with this. We haven't been abroad since 2019 - (no big deal as no-one went anywhere for 2-3 years anyway, because pandemic!!) And we drive an old car not a new one... A TWO year old merc. And we eat organic food, but we're soooo poor with only 5500 a month to live on!!! Please help us. Please feel sorry for us.

Come off it @summerfinn You're on the wind-up! Hmm
