PIP

Hi. New to the forum and PIP and am hoping some of the forum members can help me understand the claim process a little better, I applied for PIP in early December 2022. DWP told me that Capita had received my forms on December 9th. But i have not had a phone assessment scheduled yet. So i called Capita just to make sure everything was fine with my claim. They told me this morning that my claim "is in initial review" and that they "are requesting info from my medical contacts so they can do a Paper assessment". Is this a good/bad sign that my claim will be successful?

@InMySpareTime may I ask how long it was from sending off your form to your assessment?

InMySpareTime · 07/10/2023 06:46

4 weeks

pleasehelp23 · 07/10/2023 10:05

They got my form 28th July and I had my assessment 22nd September, I am waiting for my report to arrive

pleasehelp23 · 07/10/2023 10:31

I have just received my report and going through it I feel the health professional listened, she gave me 13 points for care component and 10 points for mobility. Has anyone had the DM completely change the points so you wasn’t entitled? I am so nervous waiting for the decision thank you

catskittens · 07/10/2023 18:00

my points were 12 for both and i was concerned the Decision maker may downgrade but thankfully he agreed with the report and made it for 6yrs from my experience they do seem to agree with the report

so stay calm if you can and fingers crossed

pleasehelp23 · 07/10/2023 18:40

Thank you for your comment, the assessor has advised 2 years I just hope the DM agrees 🤞🏽

Dylanb · 08/10/2023 10:04

@pleasehelp23 thanks. Do they give you much notice for the assessment? As you can tell I feel nervous already and don't know if I want lots of notice or be told it's in 2 days? 🥴

pleasehelp23 · 08/10/2023 10:11

Hi I got a message 2 days before my appointment which was originally 20th but that day I got a call to say it had been cancelled and then I had an appointment 22nd instead, the assessment wasn’t bad, I was really nervous too. I hope it all goes well for you

Neikz · 12/10/2023 18:26

Hello! I had my PIP assessment for profound hearing loss, a face to face assessment, and it was lightening fast! I was in and out of the door in 20 mins.

my assessor checked if I was wearing my hearing aids, asked about cooking and fire alarms, then asked about meeting people face to face and to describe my difficulties and then I was done?

Everyone I read about has a long assessment and now I’m worried that I’ve been totally dismissed lol.

is this normal?

I suppose it was probably short because the assessor is only really having to focus on the communication descriptor assuming you don't have other physical problems too which affect all the other descriptors ?

The length makes no difference in my experience. Mine lasted an hour and it was clear she (because she said that) thought she knew way more than the medical people I've been under

VelvetDream · 16/10/2023 16:28

I’m sorry to hear that. I felt like my assessor had no idea about hearing loss and what it’s like to be deaf.

I felt like the decision had already been made before I entered the room. I’ll see what happens, they said it can take 8 weeks for a reply.

Rachel19852023 · 12/11/2023 21:51

Can i ask did you get it in the end ?

Worried1987 · 16/11/2023 16:11

Has anyone got PIP when they have small children? I had my assessment today over the phone. The assessor went into loads of detail about how I take my child to school and now I am worried that I won’t get anything because I can look after my kids. I can’t drive for medical reasons and can’t use public transport so I was hoping to get some mobility points. It looks like I will probably get nothing now and I wish I had not applied.

InMySpareTime · 16/11/2023 16:19

Mobility is hard to get if you're doing a school run on foot, you need to show that doing so is not safe or to an acceptable standard.
I assume the school run is over 200m.
To get mobility points that journey would need to take you over twice as long as it would an able bodied person, and cause you an exacerbation of your symptoms (ie pain/fatigue).
They'll argue that you regularly walk over 200m, you'll probably need to go to the tribunal stage to get across how that necessary journey affects your condition, and how your school run differs from the norm.

I realise that even though I do have a physical disability I will not score a single point for my walking I was hoping that I would get done for not being able to plan and follow the route of an unfamiliar journey by myself . The school run is a familiar journey so I should qualify but because I can leave the house by myself I will get nothing.

Worried1987 · 16/11/2023 17:08

I think I will have scored zero on daily living as well. I feel so sad. I wish I hadn’t applied.

InMySpareTime · 16/11/2023 17:12

Hang in there, and don't be afraid to push for Mandatory reconsideration then an appeal tribunal.
The majority of cases are awarded or increased at appeal as the judges take a more holistic and less judgmental approach to claimants than the assessors do, and you get time and space to prove your day to day struggles.

Worried1987 · 16/11/2023 17:25

Thats good to know I will look into that if I come back not eligible. It is such a stressful process snd I feel like it is a personal attack on me.

InMySpareTime · 16/11/2023 17:37

Also if (when) the award is increased at appeal it gets back paid to your initial claim date when you first called. The longer they take the larger the lump sum back payment.

This thread is almost full but there's a similar one on the go here if you need further support:

PIP mandatory reconsideration http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/money-matters/4913055-pip-mandatory-reconsideration

MyOtherNameToday · 18/11/2023 11:59

Why are you applying for it @Worried1987 ? Is it for a specific condition?

AutumnCrow · 18/11/2023 13:17

If you go over to the other thread, @Worried1987, we can try and help.
