As the title says. Tell me I'm not the only one. And can anyone remember how you do it online? Am i right in thinking you need to register several days before the deadline...

Marne · 20/01/2008 18:16

Dh is doing his tommorrow

Hassled · 20/01/2008 18:18

You can do it online but they have to POST you a pin number thingy so get registering pronto!

JingleyJen · 20/01/2008 18:18

sadly I have thought about it and that is it, every day at breakfast i see the note on the blackboard saying TAX RETURN and I still haven't done it!!!

must do it tonight Thankfully still have my online logg in details and I find it much easier online.

Magdelanian · 20/01/2008 18:18

Just done mine today. It was a short one this year. I dont earn alot (or so I say) in self employment so only took half an hour.

ScienceTeacher · 20/01/2008 18:20

I started mine in the spring, and then did nothing. Had a burst in the Christmas holidays, and actually printed it. It is still waiting to be posted. The sad thing is that I am getting a big refund, so should have had it off at the earliest opportunity.

It is so hard to get excited about tax returns.

WillyWonka · 20/01/2008 18:20

We were up till 2am on Christmas Eve doing dh's . If you've not used the online facility before, you have to register then wait a good few days for your password & user id to be sent (separately). If you are already registered this delay doesn't apply. HTH

alfiesbabe · 20/01/2008 18:24

Thank you! I've been doing one for the last god knows how many years so should know by now but it always catches me out! Luckily mine's fairly straightforward as most of my earnings are PAYE, but it's still a bugger innit?

alfiesbabe · 20/01/2008 18:27

Does it make a difference getting it off earlier then? Cos I always get a fairly nice amount back, but it's usually a fair few weeks after the deadline. Funny how they can take your money off you so damn quick but paying back what they owe you seems to take longer.......

Magdelanian · 20/01/2008 18:28

It is a bugger, my se earning are so small I feel like sending a note in to say is it worth it. I've just remembered I did it online one year but forgot the next time. Soon we will have to do it online.

WillyWonka · 20/01/2008 18:31

Have never been lucky enough to see a rebate but my Dad's an accountant and I know it's his busiest time of year so imagine they're inundated. Might see your money quicker if you submit it sooner?

OverMyDeadBody · 20/01/2008 18:31

oh god, I still have to do mine.

Oh thank god i'm not the only one!

Have never done one before but earnt very little last year anyway so shouldn't actually have anything to pay.

ChasingSquirrels · 20/01/2008 18:41

Refunds get processed reasonably quickly whatever time of year, although obviously the more they have to do (ie January) the longer it takes.
But if you do it online (so HMR&C don't have to process it) you should get it within a few weeks.
So if you have a refund due you should be doing your return asap - i.e. May/June when you have the info.
I am an accountant, it is REALLY frustrating that we have probably 50%+ of our returns where the info doesn't come in until Dec/Jan, despite chasing clients through the year.
That said I still haven't done ours yet! Did get them done online on 30 Dec, then realised that as we have a capital disposal we can't file online and so I have to take everything into work and do a paper form. I knew there wasn't a chargeable gain to pay tax on, but hadn't worked the exact figures out - did it last night so should get it sent off next week.
Every year I say I will do it earlier next year, and this year is the latest yet as usually make sure it is in by 31 Dec so that any tax to pay goes on our codings.

Magdelanian · 20/01/2008 18:45

ChasingSquirrels. I ticked or is that unticked the box to claim any tax against my code instead of a lump sum. Did it have to be in by 31 Dec for this? Am I too late.

wheresthehamster · 20/01/2008 18:46

I'm not even thinking about ours until next Sunday.

DelGirl · 20/01/2008 18:47

I tried to do mine online last year but you can't do the short ones on there for some reason

ChasingSquirrels · 20/01/2008 18:47

online it is 31 Dec to put it on your coding (although the year before last I did ours on 30 Dec and they put mine through my coding and not dh's - then wouldn't speak to me about it - grr).
not sure with the paper form, that might be earlier - 30 Sep.

ChasingSquirrels · 20/01/2008 18:48

no can't do the short one online - but as you only need to fill in the infor for the income you have the long one wouldn't really take much longer - you just ignore all the other stuff.

DelGirl · 20/01/2008 18:51

I haven't done mine yet either, i've been thinking about for weeks/months.I usually get it in for August but not this time. It gives me a headache but I know once it's done i'll feel much better and the reality is it's never as bad as you think it's going to be but it's a pita!

virgo · 20/01/2008 18:53

just paid my bill on-line - I always have a fiar bit to pay because we're paid mainly divs and not much paye throughout the year.

BUT I've just noticed that my account on-line shows an interest charge of £308 that I didn't know about - I think its something to do with payments on accounts - but I thought I'd reduced these to nothing - anyhow didn't get any notice through the post at all - anyone know about this sort of thing??? Its bound to cost the same amount in accountant's fees for them to look at it - so have paid the whole lot and the interest at the moment.

DelGirl · 20/01/2008 18:54

oh right, maybe i'll do that next time then. I don't think I can bear to think about it this time round.

suzycreamcheese · 20/01/2008 18:57

can only offer solidarity in past lateness, here alfiesmum!
when self employed i used to always leave it to last minute to the point of having to deliver it by hand to tax office most years..with all the other late time losers..
thank feck thats over
but had an accountant to do the work
its got numbers ....am no good for them

respek to all those who do their own forms and stuff!

phew!!!

alfiesbabe · 20/01/2008 19:45

chasingsquirrels you've made me feel like a naughty girl now!! I promise to do my next one in May, I promise to do my next one in May.......
