Anyone who has done WWW. I've downloaded the offline assessments but media player won't play the MP3 files. Cannot work out how to hear the audio. Any ideas?

8DPWoah · 24/08/2022 13:41

I've no technical advice I'm afraid @Ihearya but I'd advise just popping them an email to say that you're sorting out software issues, they might give you a hand with suggestions as they'll have seen it before no doubt, but in any case letting them know won't be a negative

My husband has been out of work for a while and so I told him about how things on here. I am doing surveys and he joined Appen. He was accepted on a project, put his payment details in and then they delayed and delayed. He just got an email saying the project is now full. This is very disappointing as he was told he was definitely on the project. Has anyone else had this? I had only heard positive things on this so this is a concern.

Copied from previous thread
@Graphista, just did the www audio tests and failed, also have no idea why as got 100% in the spelling, grammar and research bits, followed all the instructions on ellipses etc, did the test twice and scored 35% both times Hmm.

I've just done the test again, purposely making deliberate mistakes in every single example, spelling, punctuation etc and my score was...... 35%. What a waste of an afternoon.

This happened to me too. I wondered if they do this when they aren’t actively recruiting. I’ll try again at some point.

Rapidtango · 25/08/2022 10:50

Sorrynotathome, yes, I wondered the same, but why on earth not just say they're not recruiting and to try later or put you on a waiting list.

TBH, I'm trying to find work at the moment, applying for loads of stuff with no luck, which in the current climate is really worrying considering the number of vacancies. Being told I'd failed on these tests just made me feel a whole lot worse about myself, when being told they weren't currently accepting new applicants would have been fine.

Graphista · 25/08/2022 14:36

@MrsWombat can you tell me more about printables please? Think this is an idea I could work in with some crafting abilities I have to create unique and saleable products but would appreciate guidance if possible?

I too am no artist but I have other skills that would fit in with this idea.

Recommendations on printer and other kit?

Just got my first voucher through Shoppix which took ages but that's partly down to me not being totally on the ball, you really need to do them on the day and I forget about the 7 day limit often. Will endeavour to be more "on it" with that and the surveys apps which work well for me when I remember to do them! They've paid for a few girls nights out for me

dottycats · 25/08/2022 15:45

I took the ykn test on appen last week but still haven't heard anything. Does anyone know how long it usually takes to hear? It took ages to do !

This happened to me. Accepted on a number of projects but no work. After a year I finally got to work one but it ended 2 weeks later. Frustrating because I liked it, hit a good hourly rate and was paid with no probs. All you can do is just keep applying and don't put all your eggs in one basket. I've given up and I start a 'real' job soon.

sorrynotathome · 25/08/2022 18:27

@Rapidtango I feel for you - I hate failing too and I agree it would be so much simpler just to say they're not looking for anyone at this time.

Goingtofast · 25/08/2022 19:38

Ap* is like that, sometimes you spend time on qualification and training and never get selected for the live work, and then when you do runs of work are short.

I’m on live WWW work now but after all that I don’t think it’s for me 😞 I’m a fast typer but clearly not fast enough, and checking all the grammar and everything it’s taken me all day and I’ve still not finished a 30 odd minute file!

8DPWoah · 25/08/2022 21:40

@Goingtofast I was so slow to begin with too but I found I got faster quite quickly- I think I read somewhere that if you can do files in about three times the length of the audio then that's quick!

I'm still not quick after 12ish months but I'm quick enough that it's just financially viable. I tend to just blast through a file once not really taking note of anything other than typing the words and attributing them to the speakers, and I don't stop and correct my typos etc. Then I go back through the document and sort out the red and blue squiggles (I tend to do this when I'm doing something else at the same time). I then put in markers for where I need to time stamp. Then I do a second listen through and correct any odd bits that didn't get squiggles (wrong word spelled properly, for example) and my time stamps. If the speech is slow or really clear then you can speed the audio up a touch so this bit is quicker without losing accuracy.

I reckon I work at about 1 minute takes 4 minutes so the base pay jobs aren't really worth doing but I keep plodding through them and keep an eye out for the higher paying ones, TC and FV aren't much slower to do at all but they do pay a bit better. And then obviously the short deadline ones are the real earners but they do get snapped up!

I don't think I'll ever make a fortune doing it but it's my main consistent and fully flexible work, the other things I do are hit and miss or with less control over deadlines etc so I take a bit of a hit on the pay on that basis, rightly or wrongly.

Thank you so much, that’s all very helpful.
Do you use any other grammar tool? Or just trust word and it’s squiggles lol

I do find it quite difficult to identify the speakers, particularly when there are a few of them talking over each other!

I don't print anything. I sell the printables as PDFs on places like Etsy.

I use powerpoint mostly to create the printables, and KDP interiors. (They look like this ) And Adobe Ilustrator/Photoshop to create the covers and t shirts. Like this. A lot of people use the free canva to get started.

Goingtofast · 26/08/2022 18:20

I’ve been doing lots of research on POD since you mentioned it, I think I’d be good at it but worried the market is saturated with low priced products. Can you make decent money from it?

8DPWoah · 26/08/2022 19:17

@Goingtofast I just use the squiggles and if I don't like what it suggests I ignore it 🤣 I do Google rules sometimes eg practice and practise is one I still check every now and then.

Focus groups can be a bloody nightmare to transcribe but sometimes you get ones where the IV makes everybody say their name first and instantly that makes me adore them! I definitely try to find one to one or two to two at most unless I've been a bit short of work.

And I try to do 30-40 minute files from preference because I get settled into it without it going on for what feels like forever, and if I absolutely have to I can do that amount of work in one evening while maintaining quality.

I make decent pocket money... It's something I enjoy creating so doesn't seem like much work. I earn £5 for every sale of my top two t-shirt designs. My best selling KDP colouring book earns me £3.60. The printables can vary. My most expensive best seller earns me $6.40 for each sale. The market is saturated with low price items, but IMHO it's saturated with the ideas of 20 something males for whom English is not their first language. There's plenty of niches available for 20/30/40 something British women selling to other British women. That's where most of my sales seem to go to. I wish I had more time to dedicate to it. I seem to be pulled in a lot of direction and need to focus!!!

8DPWoah · 26/08/2022 21:12

Just been on app to do my FB survey and spotted two Malta projects and an SME hour a day one, fingers crossed one of them comes off for me because I'm already missing my old hour a day task 🤣 but for anyone registered on app might be worth looking at the project list as these look quite new. Might just be that I never saw these while I was tied to the last project but you never know.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 26/08/2022 22:13

Can someone give the link for the audio transcription one? I will get my husband working if it kills me! The IT job market is very quiet at the moment but hopefully will pick up once schools are back.

I've just logged onto my account, I noticed that my active processes is now 7. It used to be in the 20's 😐What happened to all the work lol

ruralwanderer · 27/08/2022 13:33

@AnotherOne4 they time out after (I think) 6 months if you aren't added to the project in that time, so you need to re-apply.

Hope you've all had a good August. I made £563.92 which I'm happy with considering I've had the kids home full time. Hoping to make a similar amount in September as although they're back at school next week, I am taking a week off at the end of the month to prepare for my hubby's 40th birthday (cake baking, finishing off some DIY projects, and a little weekend away 😊)

SSci was my best earner at £443.59, followed by Crisp at £111.84 and I did a few little Prolific surveys to make £8.49. I am going to make more of an effort to pick up Crisp shifts this month and managed a last minute one this morning which earned me just over £10 for the hour and a good start to the month Smile

OP posts:
Slippersue · 01/09/2022 13:41

RudsyFarmer · 01/09/2022 13:55

Place marking mainly. I’ve just got a new job which is around 17 hours a week term time. Always looking for a side hustle though so hoping to get some ideas.
