Anyone interested in a YNAB chat/support thread?

Hi,

I wondered if anyone was interested in a YNAb thread to chat about progress and help each other. I've just started the trial period a couple of weeks ago and, although it's quite a steep learning curve I'm really impressed with it.
I'm freelance so it's important for me to track money and be prepared for fallow periods. I had a thread here with some great advice. I'll add it as there are some good links www.mumsnet.com/Talk/legal_money_matters/4327812-YNAB-help-for-a-freelancer?watched=1&msgid=110514876#110514876

Anyone up for some YNAB chat/support?

I've watched some of the budget nerds videos on YouTube

I’m in a facebook group which is pretty supportive. I haven’t seen many of the YouTube videos. I should probably try a few of them to keep me motivated - at the moment I’m a little downhearted that I basically don’t have as much money as I would like!

Ruralbliss · 16/10/2021 21:29

Pleased to see this thread. Have been YNAB convert for over 10 years and ageee it was earth shattering when I first started using it and actually had grown up conversations about where our incomes would be spent.

In the past year I've stopped using it as was doing up house to sell and so much other stuff going on a barely had time to sleep and breathe.

A house move is imminent and I can not wait to get restarted with YNAB to see how much the new place (a downshift) will see us better off each month with more to spend on days out, fitness and savings.

I have to say I am loving the new widget for Android. You can see category balances at a glance and if you tap on the category it instantly takes you to the screen to input a transaction.

I had to update my app to get it but it's great!

Justanotherquestioner · 18/10/2021 16:59

Oh nice! I'll update my ynab.

I've just had to WAM every single true expense category to cover my credit card interest. Gutted

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/10/2021 21:05

Oh no just.
I had to move money about because they didn’t just take the £60 I paid, they took the £45 for the minimum balance as well. But at least that money has come off the balance.

marchtothebee · 19/10/2021 21:58

I went wild in the merch sale and bought a sticker ($4) Grin

katplva · 20/10/2021 08:05

Hope you had a category to cover that merch cost @marchtothebee Wink

Just bumbling along with it all for now. The main issue I have with my finances this month is I am starting to buy Christmas presents, but I have not been YNABing long enough to have built up a well-funded Christmas category. So I am wamming from true expenses categories to cover purchases which is not ideal. But this time next year things will be different!

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 20/10/2021 08:27

Christmas is a bastard. I'm in a similar position. Also, pre YNAB I promised DD she could have a Nintendo switch this Christmas.......

BertieBotts · 20/10/2021 09:47

I have a new category for Christmas this year, we often have relatives sending money for the DC or for us to do nice things over Christmas, but if I fund it directly to the Christmas category, it gets all mushed and mixed in with what I've funded and I don't know what's what, I don't like adjusting the goal to reflect it either. So I've made a "Gift holding" category where I can keep that money separately.

katplva · 20/10/2021 09:47

Any good deals out there @OrangeBlossomsinthesun? I’m also following the Christmas deals thread for anything on my list. I’ve 4 DC and the costs just add up!

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 20/10/2021 09:51

There doesn't seem to be anything under about €300/350 for the switch plus animal crossing/other game. I might be able to get it and pay over a few months interest free from El Corte Inglés I think.

katplva · 20/10/2021 12:26

I’m not usually one for buying things on credit, but that option could really help the budget in the short to medium term. As long as payments are also put towards funding Christmas 2022 as well Smile

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 20/10/2021 13:02

I might be able to get it interest free with El Corte Inglés but even if they aren't offering that, I can spread the payments over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months I think if I buy it from Game (videogame store here) there's a charge but not as much as using my credit card for instance.

I have just started the free trial of YNAB, feel a little overwhelmed- hopefully will all become clear!

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 21/10/2021 13:39

Scroll down to some of the videos I posted, they really help when you are starting out

@OrangeBlossomsinthesun - thank you. I will have a look after work tonight

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 21/10/2021 14:25

I found the Nick True one particularly helpful

I am loving this thread. I have been using the app for several years now. Still use it a little but as a tracker but I'm getting better.

My question is.... would anyone here wear a YNAB hoodie? Is it just me? I don't think I could do it. I think I would be so embarrassed and I can imagine my kids faces Grin

katplva · 21/10/2021 19:34

I don’t think I would @PoloMintPatty! I like hoodies and I like YNAB, but I’m not a zealous enough fan to advertise it around the place (yet!) The mug or phone sticker thing might be good reminders to keep up transactions I suppose.

BertieBotts · 22/10/2021 11:49

Yes the merch doesn't appeal to me for that reason.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 22/10/2021 12:05

Yeah, not fussed about the merch here either. Up to 8 days AOM here.

Hello, does anyone have a referral code for YNAB they’d be happy to share? I am just about to sign up again after letting it lapse. Thank you Smile

Justanotherquestioner · 25/10/2021 19:02

Do they do referral codes?

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 25/10/2021 20:13

@Justanotherquestioner

Do they do referral codes?
I thought that now it was just the free 34 day trial
