How much is your weekly food shop?

My other half alway moans at how much I spend on the weekly shop. There’s 2 adults and 2 year old. I spend between £120 - £130 (in the UK) We are dairy free and go through 5/6 cartons of oatly milk a week, so there’s a tenner right there. Because he goes on at me so much I was starting to think it was a lot, however his brother and partner came round a couple of days ago and they started talking about their shop and his brother was saying he usually spends about £120 for 2 adults. So I’m curious, what do you all spend a week?

Depends whether I get my online shop slots from Tesco or Ocado 🤣🤣 I’ve worked out we spend about £400 a month on online food shops (around £70 every five days or so) and then probably one takeaway a week and one top up shop a week, which probably takes us up to around £550 a month all in. So that’s about £120-£140 a week. That’s for 3 of us.

Every time I go shopping I go from one shop to the next as there are specific products we like and at least once a weak going through 3 supermarkets I send in excess of £150. The bill never seems to be less than £50 wherever we go and however empty the trolley seems.

But it is all the other little things I guess when you need to pop out to get a few bits on your way home.

I never really stopped to consider, but food wastage is most likely the thing to look for. After every meal, half if not almost all of the plate of my little girl go in the bin. I used to finish it off, but I kicked the habit off to keep my weight in check.

But what drives me mad is to put in the bin an unused pack of something because it went past the best before date, or because there are suddenly biscuit beetles coming out of the tea bags or because garden ants got inside the cupboards. Biscuit beetles and garden ants are possibly the safest pests of all in term of health hazard

@Smashmallow - There are 7 of us, 2 adults, 2 tweens, 2 primary school and a toddler.

😮 wow, what a combination of individuals! I would love a house filled with that much family ♥️

55-65 a week. Monthly one off at the butchers of £50.
2 adults, 5 Yr old. 9 month old and 2 cats. Includes everything. Food, nappies, toiletries etc.

AnExcellentWalker · 06/04/2021 19:30

£50-60 per week. But, we do get our milk delivered which is another £16 every month for 6 pints of milk & half a pint of cream per week.
2 adults, 1 child. DD & DH both eat a lot - DH is 6'4", & DD is also tall, & energetic like the Duracell bunny. I have a lot of dietary restrictions & eat a lot of fruit & veg, fish etc. Very little by way of starchy carbs which are cheaper. We tend to buy fresh food for 3 days at a time.
In summer it's a bit cheaper as I grow some herbs, tomatoes, salad leaves etc in the garden. A few berries as well if the birds don't get them first.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 06/04/2021 19:35

We don't shop weekly, just one monthly big shop delivered. Two adults and a 2 year old, usually spend around £130, this includes all food and household products, we do pick up extra milk and fruit in the middle of the month and this is usually about £10, so in total usually always around £140 a month.

m0therofdragons · 06/04/2021 19:43

@AnExcellentWalker 6 pints of milk a month? I know I have 3dc but still... we get through 16-20 pints of milk per week Blush

Girlintheframe · 06/04/2021 19:54

Around £130-150 for 3 adults.

That also includes 1 x bottle of wine a week, all cleaning products/laundry products and food for 2 xs cats.

I do a monthly big shop at tesco then top up shops usually at Aldi or Asda.

We rarely eat red meat but do eat a lot of fresh fish which pushes the cost up.

Tinofcokeforme · 06/04/2021 19:56

£120 2 adults and 4 kids

Marmite27 · 06/04/2021 20:00

£80-100 for 2 adults, a 6yo and a 3yo. The house is swimming in food. Two freezers, a larder cupboard, utility room full and over spill on top of the kitchen cupboards.

Endofmytether2 · 06/04/2021 20:07

I don't actually know anymore, but I used to be spending around £65pw, then once every 4-5 weeks that would shoot up to £90-100. Then between £70-£120 once every 10 weeks on pet food and treats for them.

This was shopping at Aldi or Lidl and at Zooplus online for our pets, and included groceries and alcohol/treats as well as household cleaning/hygiene stuff, so basically everything for 2 adults, 2 teens and dogs and cats.
We eat meat about 4 times per week and don't require any special diets though.

This was also around 18 months ago. I know it's gone up since then as I've stopped taking a list with me and I impulse buy more.

Zakidoodles23 · 06/04/2021 20:08

£65 per week 2 adults and 2 children (6 and 18 months) includes nappies, packed lunches, some toiletries and cleaning products. I meal plan to minimise waste and we don't drink alcohol so that saves some money. I don't think we go without anything and could spend more if we wanted.

bluechameleon · 06/04/2021 20:20

Tesco delivery is usually between £90 and £110. Veg box delivery and milk, cheese and yoghurts from milkman add up to almost another £40. Then probably another £10 top up of fruit and bread midweek. So £150ish. 2 adults and 2 children.

Alannathelioness · 06/04/2021 20:20

I don't really do a weekly shop (get gousto, and tend to do a monthly meat order from Field & Flower etc) but including the dogs food we budget £470 a month for two adults and a dog. Not including alcohol.
Takeaways and food out is separate.

thirstyformore · 06/04/2021 20:23

£50 Gousto, £100ish online shop, another £20-£30 random top ups. So around £170/180 a week. That feeds 2 adults and 2 children (8 and 12) for all meals. Don't often have takeaway, maybe once every month/3 weeks. And since lockdown and WFH this covers lunches for us all as well.

Includes all cleaning products, alcohol etc.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 06/04/2021 20:29

2 adults , 2 older teenagers and a dog. All with big appetites. Shop in Aldi £135 plus a £10 Tesco top up of bits I cant get . This includes everything food, drink, toiletries, cleaning products, dog food (raw meat and kibble, treats, chews etc), basic medicines, alcohol.

If we didnt drink alcohol our weekly bill would be £80 all in 😬😳

badatcrochet1996 · 06/04/2021 20:32

2 adults, always between £40-£50.

user1487194234 · 06/04/2021 20:36

About £250 a week
2 adults/ 2 teenagers
Pre Covid we spent less but ate out a lot
Cook mainly from scratch
DH buys alcohol from a wine merchant but I do normally buy some wine

AledsiPad · 06/04/2021 20:40

Anywhere from £75-150 a week depending on where we go, what we get etc. Doesn’t include toiletries or dog food. We get loo roll on Amazon subscribe and save and toiletries from home bargains. Ddog is fed on butternut box which is about £10 a week.

2Ad, 4DC here (plus ddog). 2 kids are teens though and youngest 7 so not small portions any more!

Roodicus21 · 06/04/2021 21:02

All in, including food, dog food, alcohol, toiletries probably £200-250 per week. 2 adults, 1dc and dog.

AnExcellentWalker · 06/04/2021 22:37

@m0therofdragons no, 6 pints of milk plus half a pint of cream per week. DD & I get through most of it, DH barely has any except in the very coldest part of winter, we usually increase the order or buy extra from the supermarket.

Reinventinganna · 06/04/2021 22:41

I budget £100 a week but it’s usually under £70. 2 adults and one teen (vegan and gluten free plus a meat eater).

m0therofdragons · 06/04/2021 23:01

@AnExcellentWalker ah that makes me feel happier. My dc don’t like fizzy drinks and still drink water or milk except a juice or squash with dinner so lots of milk here. I considered a milk delivery but I don’t think there’s enough space on my doorstep and the glass bottles don’t lay down so I can’t get 20 bottles in the fridge. I buy 4pt bottles so dc can poor themselves breakfast (6pt was disastrous)!

wigjuice · 07/04/2021 05:14

Too much. Around £200/£250 a week, for 3 adults and a teenager. This includes cat food for 3 very fussy diva cats.

Piccalily19 · 07/04/2021 05:35

About £80-&100 a week depending on if we need toiletries or alcohol stash top ups. 2 of us plus a baby although minus nappies he doesn’t add much to it.
If I could afford to spend more I would, a nice meal can make my day!
