Just that? How much savings do you have?

We have a home, pension etc. But I'm talking about savings account?

I'm 29.

OP you're coming across as pretty immature. I remember at school I had a friend who would ask things like how many Barbies we had, and practically BURST to brag about hers.

I don't know if you're disingenuous or not but you're not coming across very well. I personally don't understand how you can say, with a straight face, that you're worried about only having £6,000 in savings, admit to wasting money, and owning 2 properties outright. You seem very out of touch with reality. Did you grow up sheltered? It's a bizarre collection of statements and you seem ignorant.

To answer your thread though: I have 6 months of living expenses saved up based on my current outgoings. This could be stretched to 8-10 months if DP or I lost our jobs as I would of course have to put an end to my Waitrose trips and cancel things like the craft gin club, veg boxes and various other shite I waste my money on.

Sadly I don't have a property portfolio to sell in a pinch though.

MunaZaldrizoti · 03/09/2020 12:55

Everything @TheBeesKnee said. OP, you are coming across like some Jacob Rees-Mogg asshole who lives on another planet.

I am about to be 29, I live and work in London, and have £6k saved in an ISA. And I know I am lucky to be my age and have what I have saved.

swimster01 · 03/09/2020 13:05

This all sounds far-fetched to me

Doesn't it just. The more it evolves, the more that appears to be the case.
Ariela · 03/09/2020 13:31

Surely it's all pro-rate to age and how much you earn and other factors such as household running costs (mortgage, bills etc)?
I have enough savings to last till pension age if I got made redundant tomorrow or DH dropped dead, I would survive but I'd have to get another job within 6 months to a year (confident I could though). After pension age I would have more than enough to survive even allowing for cost of living rises. If DH pegged it, I'd definitely downsize and move to a cheaper area though, would make the money last longer.

QueSera · 03/09/2020 14:09

How on earth can you by age 29 have bought two 'significant' properties outright?

ChanceEncounter · 03/09/2020 14:11

@QueSera

How on earth can you by age 29 have bought two 'significant' properties outright?
And having done so, why would you be worrying about savings Confused
lilythepink32 · 03/09/2020 14:49

My parents gave me early inheritance so I am not taxed heavily when they pass away.

Not that I need to justify myself.

I'll take that as a positive then.

Like I said, thanks to all of those who replied. I don't think I'll continue to reply to insults. I don't need to justify myself 🙄

Also, out of interest - why would someone lie? @swimster01 and @QueSera

What would I have to gain by making this up?

But this is exactly the sort of info that makes your question about savings meaningless. You don't have savings but you do have assets.

I can't understand what you wanted to get from the thread.

I think you're naive if you think that people don't lie/embellish the truth on an anonymous forum.

In any case, if you think it is commonplace to have a house, pension, husband, children, be self-employed, two investment properties at age of 29, then it does sort of sound like you're from a different planet, sorry

SummerL1ght207 · 03/09/2020 16:31

Savings interest rates are currently very low

Anyone that has any sort of savings are doing well in the current climate

Amount of savings would depend on your employment status, lifestyle, age etc

It's good to have an emergency fund

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 03/09/2020 16:49

About £10k, split between generally saving for the future, holidays and house renovations. About £100k equity in our house. About £20k in my pension and a final salary pension for DH. We're 32.

RedHelenB · 03/09/2020 17:49

@FinallyFluid. If you have that amount of pension and no mortgage I cant see that you ll need the 25 000 savings, that just seems ultra cautious
10 000 tops I'd say.

ILoveAnOwl · 03/09/2020 18:11

I agree with you, but DH has turned into a pensionzilla. 😂 🙄🙄🙄

People at the beginning of the thread said that savings were relevant to earnings and your huffy responses caused a few people to reply in the same way. You derailed your own own thread with your sulky attitude.
caringcarer · 04/09/2020 00:09

I only have about £12k in deposit account but I only have less than 4 years to go to pay off mortgage, can draw teachers pension from next August and in addition I have £47k in an additional pension fund I can draw down when I want as over 55. I still work so have salary every month and DH works too.

Nsky · 04/09/2020 03:40

Enough, not enough tho.
58 no housing costs, home owner, save £100 a month, plus save the change, low earner.
Life throws all kinds of stuff at you

ChasingRainbows19 · 04/09/2020 05:56

I’m early 40s. I have about 8k currently but this is fluid as it’s for everything. We are slowly improving our home. Mortgage is small amount monthly and living expenses are low.

Do have my NHS pension for the future too. Around ten years mortgage if we can continue overpaying. Then more will be diverted to savings for retirement. Currently good sick leave pay in the NHS which is reassuring If needed.

Thisismynewname123 · 05/09/2020 10:55

I hardly had anything at your age, OP. Now mid-40s, I have just over £30k in savings. DH has about the same. I have about £200k in pension at the moment, and again, DH has about the same. Still have a huge mortgage though, that won't be paid off until close to retirement age.

LoLo2020 · 06/09/2020 08:19

I've got about 1k, tricky to save as I'm a single parent but hope for that figure to increase as I'm on a better salary now (assuming nothing goes wrong that eats into my savings :/)
