Just that? How much savings do you have?

We have a home, pension etc. But I'm talking about savings account?

I'm 29.

I have different pots for different things. And property and a pension plus FSAvCs.

Whenwillthisbeover · 03/09/2020 05:36

83k including shares which are rock bottom, but I’m 54 and had bugger all at your age.

veejayteekay · 03/09/2020 05:49

Partner and I are in our early 30s and have around £16k saved. I work in a sector that is often hit with redundancies so for me it's some security against that. If one of us was our of work for a while it would be a cushion and we also dip into it for large buys as we don't have any credit

honeygirlz · 03/09/2020 05:58

So you’ve just bought two properties outright with no mortgage, live in the third house and your husband has huge savings, and yet you only have £6k saved and spend recklessly? And you’re comparing yourself to people who only have £500 in savings? What is the point? You must know that you’re never going to be in the position of those who lost their jobs and had no savings during coronavirus. People who are genuinely well off don’t post threads like this, OP.

But I did share my own! Including my savings. RTFT! [/quote]
This isn't a nice feeling thread at all. Your update about your savings was just above mine, I had rtft and found the way you were at the start asking others repeatedly to tell you exact numbers quite strange. I hadn't seen your update when I posted my point.

Some threads just don't have a friendly feel at all.

supercee · 03/09/2020 06:06

Geezo. The OP is just wanting to get a general consensus about how much savings folk have. A figure. £1, £1k, £1M. If you don't feel comfortable with that don't reply!

'Two year's expenses' - how much is that?!

As someone (38) who went through years of having no savings and is now finally putting something away each month (£2500 in a savings account, little under £1k to answer your question OP) I'm also intrigued as to how much people have saved.

supercee · 03/09/2020 06:07

*£1k in another account I should've said.

honeygirlz · 03/09/2020 06:10

I think the feeling is OP is not posting in good faith (all the drip feeds on multiple properties, huge savings, no expenses) coupled with the fact that anyone can say they have 000,000s on an anonymous forum!

honeygirlz · 03/09/2020 06:12

It’s surely more useful to know how much you have in savings in relation to the rest of your financial situation. So someone earning 100k is more likely to be interested to know what other people earning 100k have in savings.

Dryseptember2020 · 03/09/2020 06:13

We have about £15k. £11k in a savings acc and £4K in HTB ISA. Was £17k but we spent a lot during August doing a few bits to the house and taking our children out/ holiday. We are saving to buy our own house but my partner is in a low paying job (that he loves) and I’m a student so work as and when I’m free. Not too long to go and a job lined up for when I graduate that is quite well paying so should be able to massively boost that considering what we managed to save in the mean time. I’m happy with what we have. Late 20’s btw! We also have 2 separate savings accounts for our children which I pay into every month.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 03/09/2020 06:15

If people would just post their cats name and mothers maiden name as well...

TheAirbender · 03/09/2020 06:19

About 90k, plus a house in London that is paid off so an asset but not cash.

Having a joint account is infinitely preferable (and safer) for most women. Nothing to do with being in the 60s Hmm

RJnomore1 · 03/09/2020 06:22

@PineappleUpsideDownCake😁

MN is not representative of the whole demographic. A huge chunk of people have 0 or very little in savings or actually have debt and that’s increasing at the moment.

I think women are also less likely to have substantial savings.

sunlight81 · 03/09/2020 06:26

3-6months salary

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2020 08:29

How do you know we're all women? Not all Mumsnetters are female.

As a scientist with a passing interest in data and statistics, although it's not my area of expertise, I've always wondered about the point of threads like this because they tell you absolutely nothing, and could well be a list of randomly generated numbers.

To me that makes the thread interesting because its the exact opposite of how to find out the answer to what you want to know and hence a perfect illustration on how not to conduct a study.

You say you want to know about people's savings but are not interested in truthful answers or controlling the sample group so that it is typical of the general population or even within Mumsnet, which is widely known to be more affluent, better educated and London/SE centric than the UK population as a whole.

So the thread has no more value than a list of random numbers that achieves nothing except raises your blood pressure, it seems.

Anyway, about me.

48p pence if I CBA to pull it out from under the sofa
£20k and a healthy final salary pension scheme
About £900k and the keys to DHs yacht

One of those is correct, or not, maybe Smile

userxx · 03/09/2020 08:44

I personally don't have to pay for anything, my husband does and my husband has a huge amount of savings.

Oh dear 🙈

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2020 08:50

To be fair user, the OP does have two mortgage free properties and presumably the rental income, alongside her wages so it's not like she's going to be destitute if her DH divorces her, dies or loses his highly paid job and can't get another one at the same level.

Yankathebear · 03/09/2020 08:50

What would happen though op if he left? It happens! What would you have for yourself?

I have enough but not enough.

Yankathebear · 03/09/2020 08:52

Do you have a pension op?

DotTheCaddy · 03/09/2020 09:03

DH and I have about £60K in savings accounts but are about to blow through that buying a bigger house Grin We are 27 and 30.

Will probably try and leave ourselves £10K if we can for emergencies.

ivfbabymomma1 · 03/09/2020 09:26

I had £20k before lockdown but due to home improvements I have £1k left! But I have no debt only a small amount left of a mortgage (32 years old)

userxx · 03/09/2020 09:28

@BarbaraofSeville That's fair enough but I'm dying inside that she even said it out loud. I earn my own and spend my own but we are all different aren't we 🤷‍♂️.

lilythepink32 · 03/09/2020 10:33

I wished I hadn't asked.

Thanks to those who were genuine and left their responses.

I guess I've been feeling panicked about my lack of savings. I've spoken to a few friends recently, my age and both had mentioned they had £40,000 roughly saved.

I just wondered if that was the norm.

I don't know why the attack on these type of posts needs to happen. I just wanted to see a list of people just dropping in what they had saved as I didn't think many people had big chunks in the bank.

I invested a lot of my money (in property) as I thought it was a good investment.

Feeling a bit sore from this post! 😌
