Advice needed - lost engagement and wedding ring

I’m so upset! I’ve lost my engagement and wedding ring totalling up to £10,000. Its insured on home insurance valued at £14,500. The rings were bought 2.5 years ago. I still have kept the certificate and receipt. Last time I remember was wearing it at Bluewater shopping centre on Sunday, I never take it off in public. Now I’ve been at home and only just realised yesterday it’s not on my hand anymore. I take it off only at home; showering, in kitchen doing dishes, changing my baby, drying my hair or going to sleep. I can’t believe I can’t find it. I’ve searched everywhere, moving furniture and emptying everything as if I were moving house. The ring is insured separately at £14,500 with £500 excess. Insurance covers; loss, theft, damage and abroad. How can I be so stupid to lose my ring at home? I’m certain of it but I can’t find it anywhere. I’m worried if I tell my insurance they will reject my story as last time I remember wearing my rings was when I was out shopping, but I never take it off unless home. Would they reject that?

Pocket of your coat? Down the bottom of your handbag? Inside your gloves or mittens? My iPad tried to autocorrect ‘mittens’ to ‘kitten’? Could that have been a clue from the universe? Have you got a cat that’s acting suspiciously...?

Sorry, not making light of this at all, I’d be feeling distraught. Flowers

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I do know that many people find that a prayer to St. Anthony before you go to sleep actually works very well.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/12/2019 15:06

St Anthony never fails!

Amys136 · 12/12/2019 15:11

Another vote for at Antony here

Have you rang the shopping centre? Email every shop.
Offer up reward!!

My dh has lost his wedding ring twice. Handed in at a supermarket both times!!
Eejit!!

Apolloanddaphne · 12/12/2019 15:13

Have you looked inside your gloves? Pocket of dressing gown?

20viona · 12/12/2019 15:15

I lost my engagement ring a week after I had it and I found it on the inside lining of a jacket! It was extremely stressful.

GrannyBags · 12/12/2019 15:17

I lost my engagement ring less than a week after I got it. Went through the house, bins, car etc. Week later I noticed the cat playing with a bottle top in the kitchen and pushing it against the bottom board under the cabinets. The board moved in and then bounced back into place. Pulled it out to find a collection of bottle tops - and my ring! Look in all the unlikely places before you contact the insurance. Good luck

OrangeZog · 12/12/2019 15:17

Hopefully they have been handed in at the shopping centre.

It sounds like you take your rings off an awful lot. Just showering, changing your baby, drying hair and going sleep is probably the best part of a dozen times a day. That means it possible you just went into autopilot whilst out, took them off and didn’t put them back on again. If you take them off so much because you have such a large stone, maybe you’d do better to have daytime rings that you can leave on and then save your better ones for occasions or once you are out of the habit or always taking them off.

You might find your insurance company won’t pay up if you can’t prove you didn’t just take them off and leave them in an insecure place.

sofato5miles · 12/12/2019 18:06

Gosh, you take your rings off an incredible amount!

I never took mine off ever, and they were a comparable value to yours. There really isn't any need.

The insurance company will be suss about how many times you removed them a day.

Chottie · 12/12/2019 18:10

Have you looked under your bed and behind your bedroom cabinet?

Shoobydoo123 · 12/12/2019 18:19

If the rings are reasonably secure then they could have come off in the cold. Have you been outside and got cold hands, then put them on pockets or gloves ? (That way you are unlikely to notice the sensation of them coming off)

When you were in Bluewater did you visit the toilets and perhaps absent mindedly taken them off ? Anywhere else not at home you’ve washed your hands (friends, cafes etc) .

If that fails call all the shops, the centre management and maybe put an appeal out on lostbox (facebook or website)

Wow you take them off a lot! When I had small babies I never wore my engagement ring just plain wedding band. Anyway if you've lost both they must be together somewhere.

Khtchkn · 12/12/2019 18:56

Thanks all for your replies. Wow I didn’t realise I took them off a lot! I thought it was normal to take off Whilst showering, washing dishes, sleeping, drying hair.... if I ever get my rings back Ive learnt my lesson to NEVER take them off. I called the shopping centre today but nothing was handed in. I did go to a “parents room” where I changed my baby, but I don’t recall taking my rings off. I’m going to call the insurance company tomorrow and explain. I’ve searched thoroughly twice in a row now. Tomorrow I have the kitchen and living room to turn inside out and if no luck then I really don’t know where it is

I take my engagement ring off when I get home as I am so paranoid about losing it while doing housework. Never wear it in the shower. I always put it back in it's box in my jewellery box. I also have a habit of constantly feeling the ring with my thumb to make sure it's there when I'm out and about. I really feel for you. It's a horrible feeling just thinking it's lost. I hope you find it.

CrumbsThatsQuick · 13/12/2019 11:26

I think it was left in shopping centre changing room. I thought that before you posted that you had been in one.

LolaLollypop · 13/12/2019 11:28

I never take my wedding/engagement rings off. And I have recurring dreams about losing them!!

I bet they're at home somewhere OP. Hope they turn up.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 13/12/2019 11:30

Mine were gone for a year once. Had just about given up and had decided to claim on my insurance when they turned up. I hope yours do too!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/12/2019 11:36

There was a wedding ring found in a ballot box. Could that be a possibility? I know it's a massive stretch but you never know.

Notverygrownup · 13/12/2019 11:41

What a nightmare for you. Keep looking/praying!

Check under your pillow and in your bedding in case they came off in the night. Yy to checking the babychanging place in Bluewater.

I lost my engagement ring once when shopping - it was found, sitting amongst the sprouts in the supermarket - I must have reached in, pulled back my hand and left it in there.

I'm sure that the insurance much come across this all of the time.

FenellaMaxwell · 13/12/2019 11:43

That’s an awful lot of variables in terms of frequently removing them. For the insurance just be honest that you could have lost them anywhere. You don’t need to say you think they’re in your house

dontmentionbookclub · 13/12/2019 11:47

There's a piece in the Guardian today about a woman who thought she was going crazy mislaying things in the house and actually got to the point of thinking she needed psychiatric help, and it turned out that she was being 'stealth burgled' which is where a burglar enters your house and just takes small things, then comes back again and does the same. Most people then blame themselves and don't call the police, just write it off. Any chance that could have happened? Have you noticed anything else going missing at all?

AngusThermopyle · 13/12/2019 11:57

Be careful and certain before putting on insurance form that you lost it in the shopping centre. Especially with large claims. My bil is an insurance investigator and it's not unknown for them to try and get cctv footage from shops/restaurants etc to see if they can find whether the claimants left the said building with the item they're claiming for, still on their person.

DragonOnFire · 13/12/2019 20:45

My friend lost her engagement& wedding ring for a couple of weeks.she knew they were in the house but couldn't find them.... They turned up inside a candle....her baby had somehow been left in the bathroom whilst under the 'watch' of her DH, and baby had been digging the rings into the candle wax.she had taken her rings off in the bathroom to have a bath.
Hope you find them safe OP.
