Hey everyone,
I'm a long-time lurker who has read these threads for quite a while now.
Well done for the hard work that you guys have put in to gathering evidence on the underhand recruiting tactics and brainwashing that MLMs use on those who fall prey to them.
I've always had an instinctive bad feeling about these companies.....I remember a friend-of-a-friend trying to recruit me to what I think was Forever Living way back in about 2000 / 2001 (pre-social media days). I ran a mile as I hated the aggressive recruitment tactics and just knew this wouldn't be the kind of business that I'd want to get involved in. I always sensed the cult-like aspects of these businesses too, and I'm completely repelled by anything remotely cultish.
Fast forward all these years later and I'm now a personal trainer. I am regularly approached by MLM reps who tell me they have this 'amazing opportunity' that would fit in so well with my personal training work. It goes without saying that I always say a polite but resounding NO to their opportunity.
I am utterly appalled by how much this stuff has infiltrated the fitness industry, although thankfully there are also a lot of fitness professionals with integrity who won't touch MLMs with a bargepole.
To me, the minute a personal trainer affiliates themselves with anything like Herbalife, or Arbonne, or any of the MLMs, they lose every single shred of professional integrity. I actually don't know how they sleep at night, as they must be giving their clients the most terrible advice on nutrition and I presume also that they will be trying to recruit their clients to their 'downlines'. It's absolutely shocking, and I have totally lost respect for fellow 'professionals' when I have found out that they have sold out to an MLM.
Another thing that really bugs me is, when an MLM bot messages me, why are they always so cagey about what the actual 'opportunity' is? I know they are told what to say in their recruiting spiel by their uplines, and it surely also shows that on some level they all know it's bullshit and that people are suspicious of these companies. They never just come out and say, "hi, I work for Arbonne and I think you would like working for them too." It's always hidden behind this "amaaaazing opportunity" and trying to get you to come out for a coffee with them! Just say what it is instead of beating around the bush! Aaaaargh!
Anyhow, like I say I have lurked for a long time and have worked out who many of the bots are on social media. That poor nurse bot in Yawn's downline - that really is so, so sad, poor woman. And @Twentytwentyhindsight, the story of how FL has affected your family is chilling, and I hope that you and your children are doing well....I hope also that your OH eventually sees the light.
You're doing great work, folks. I'm looking forward to the BBC documentary and to the Stockholm rally too, and I intend to stick around here!
