How much would you say you spend per year on holidays

Everything all in, spending money etc? Also do you plan and save ahead mnoey wise for them.

It varies really. This year we are having three holidays:

Easter we went to a cottage in North Yorskshire with freinds. The cost of that, including days out and food, etc. would have been about £500 maybe a bit less.

In the summer we are going to the South of France in a villa with PILs. Flights, car hire and villa is costing (for our share) about £1500 or so. Then will have two week's spending money on top.

In October we are going to France/Disney with friends. Cottage, car hire and tunnel will cost us about £300 for the week. Disney tickets on top of that for 3 days, plus spending money.

Dh is really good and saving money. I am really good at booking :D

I am really good at planning, saving then changing my mind and adding another holiday in at the last minute (ie one year, centre parks and another 1 week in Portugal), not good for the budget, DH dispairs at me.

i would be reaally interested in this thread - friend said we are extravagant and i beg to differ - we only go on one a year but do have a big family

Otter · 03/06/2007 11:11

other folk go on more than one but it all mounts up

Wotz · 03/06/2007 11:16

It can vary so much to a weekends camping for very little expense to a tropical getaway. I am sure there are travel agents who book £kks of pounds worth of holidays for folk who don't batter and eyelid.

Otter · 03/06/2007 11:20

we would probably do two weeks in a house maye £2000+ per week

We also have to pay for cover at work so its a huge added extra

we have only had holidays in the last 3 or 4 years - des[ite having kids for 15!

Tinker · 03/06/2007 11:43

In UK look for cottages for around teh £400 to £500 mark per week (don't want to pay that but leave it too late to look for cheaper ones) and woudl only do 1 week in the UK (don't want UK holiday either but can't see point of elsewhere atm)

In France cottages seem to be cheaper and would do 2 weeks. Couple of overnight hotel stays en route plus ferry/tunnel = £1000 ish for accommodation and travel. Then self-cater.

persephonesnape · 03/06/2007 11:45

nothing. I haven't been on holiday since 2001. I've never been on a family holiday with all three of my children.

we went to stay with relatives in London for a week at easter, so it cost a pre booked train fare of around £60 return for all three of us with a family rail card. then London transport money and the normal amount of money we would expect to spend on packed lunches etc.

Ladymuck · 03/06/2007 11:56

I tend to assume that we will spend the equivalent of a month's net salary on holidays and budget accordingly.

The spending money side is always a tricky one, as I assume that one would still spend some money at home.

Judy1234 · 03/06/2007 11:58

Hardly dare say.... typical would be when finances allow 6 (7 when I was married) of us to Sunsail, Antigua August 2 weeks, and then 6 of us skiing, 3* hotel. Quite a bit.

PinkTulips · 03/06/2007 12:02

have never been on holiday together in the 5 years we've been together.

FrannyandZooey · 03/06/2007 12:16

We always say we can't afford to go and then realise we will go stark staring mad otherwise and try to have a couple of long weekends

last time we did a fabulous London weekend it probably cost about £500, everything included for the 3 of us. That's a lot of money but it was so much fun...

This year we are going to try to do a festival at the end of the summer - the tickets are about £200, we are hoping to get a tent sorted for about £100 - £150 and then I would think another £200 spending money / petrol while we are there would sort it

Again a lot of money to spend on a weekend, but hopefully a lot of enjoyment crammed into a few days

Desiderata · 03/06/2007 12:21

I'm prepared to go without almost everything else in order take regular holidays. They're the stuff of life for me.

My dc will benefit from the Child Trust Fund when he's older, I have no desire to leave a great pile of money behind me when I go, and I'm all for grabbing the here and now.

So in answer to your question, I would say we spend about £2,000 to £2,500 per year on holidays, plus spending money.

That will get increasingly difficult when he starts school, however. Don't the prices shoot up?

Mercy · 03/06/2007 12:22

We always do self-catering - cottages, camping etc. Maybe one or 2 weeks per year with the odd weekend staying with friends or family.

So maybe £700 per year? dh does the planning and saving part.

seb1 · 03/06/2007 12:23

Yes we are tied to school hols now it is a nightmare

Varies every year.

We've spent less than £300 on a week in a caravan, and that included everything, food (plus eating out), days out, etc.

We've also spent about £5,000 on two holidays (Florida and last year a cruise).

Cheapest year we had was probably about £600 in a cottage in Yorkshire, several years running.

Most expensive? This year, we spent approx £1000 in Holland at Easter. We're having two cheapo Sun Deal weeks at caravan sites (just got back from Bridlington) and then we're off to Florida at Christmas again.

DH is already planning his retirement holiday for 2009. That will be our most expensive holiday ever.

These figures are for five of us.

WideWebWitch · 03/06/2007 12:26

So far this year:
Ds and I spent 4 days just the two of us in London, about £900
DH and I, 2 nights in hotel last w/e, £660
Won a mumsnet holiday in Feb half term in luxury self catering so it was free but cost approx £500 for food/wine/other stuff
We're going away for a week in October (UK), probably will cost about £1,000 (£500 of which is rental, rest will be eating out/food/trips/travel)
Have 2 weeks off booked in August, we will just do day trips so that'll end up being £1k I expect once we eat out/spend days in London etc

And we don't save for them, it comes out of income although I've paid a deposit for Oct so there's not much left to pay. Just added the above up quickly and it's about £3k. And that's not really going anywhere very much.

Smurfgirl · 03/06/2007 12:27

This year about £700 - week in cyprus and a quick trip to Amsterdam.

Last year it was about £1250 - week in Zante

That includes spending money and all related holiday expenses.

MrsWho · 03/06/2007 12:27

We do those very cheap sun caravan hols BUT then eat out /visit lotsof places so tends to be £250-300 for a week +£50 ish for the caravan , this week we have been sharing a cottage with my parents and they paid but I spent about £200 (kids had been saving up for their spending money) and then £80 on HAy tickets

WideWebWitch · 03/06/2007 12:27

No it's not it's £4k, sorry.

I think we probably spent baout £25k on them last year but that was exceptional just to make KM feel even worse....

If your children are in schools when time out of school is unacceptable and you're paying fees anyway and wouldn't dream of a holiday in term time (it's against my principles, better no holiday than a holiday in term time as you're saying to the children school rules don't matter, schools are wrong, it's great to flout authority etc), then you're stuck with school holidays and higher prices.

I must say when my sister was saying how she was spending hugely on their week away this summer and it was £600 I was very careful not to say what ours cost.

But does it really matter? It's who you are with and the time you spend that counts. I remember a lot of our Caribbean holidays as do the children as being about their father's aggression and our breaking up marriage. Better a wet tent in Bognor than family crisis in smart luxury.

crunchie · 03/06/2007 12:59

we used to budget £1000 for holidays, not including spending money - but we are too tight to spend much!! Thsi covered one week camping in france at Whitsun, one week camping in Cornwall in the summer and one additional weekend at centreparcs in Jan/Feb. I was retty proud of 3 holidays for £1000.

Now I am earning a bit more we have upped the budget to around £2000. THis year we went skiing which I guess before spending money, but inc passes etc was £1500. We have a camping holiday planned in Aug for 10 days, spend so far £2 on ferry (Thank you tesco) 300E on pitch for 9 days, and we will eaither to hotel stop overs there and back £60 each night or buy another cheap small tent for £60 and do two campsites overnight.

However It is outr 10th anniversary so I am thinking a few days in paris so we will blow the budget as that will be about £500 - £700 with the kids

I think we get a lot of holidays for the money as we camp in summer and ski in winter

Hopefully if my job keeps going well we will ski every year instead of every other, that is my dream, then I will know I earn enough
