oh and I now make us budget throughthe year by puttin £100 a month each in savings for holidays and car expenses

JoolsToo · 03/06/2007 13:05

it varies.

If we go en masse as a family (grown up kids and grandkids) we will pay a large amount towards.

This year we're going to Switzerland (on Saturday atch! ) and that cost just over £3k for 2 for a fortnight. We go to Chamonix in July and that will cost us about £550 for a week B&B, that includes flight, accommodation and car hire (sharing with friends) - bargain!

We have nothing else planned as yet.

allgonebellyup · 03/06/2007 13:06

Ours varies greatly, last yr went to Canaries for one week in august, was only £1000 for 4 of us in peak season. i will always hunt down the very cheapest i can find! but spending was about another £500 on top.

This yr am going to ibiza with pals and no kids, for long weekend (£130) .
Plus cheapo cottage rental in Devon for august for 5 days (£125)which i think is a fab price. probably will be a hovel.

mymama · 03/06/2007 13:07

We normally camp at Easter and Christmas (I am in Australia) so not much. Around $500AUD.

This year we are doing a 3 month trip to UK/Ireland/France/Italy and it is costing us around $30000AUD including flights, accommodation and spends.

We had a camper trailer that we sold to fund our flights. We have saved about $12000 of it and my dh will get 3 months long service leave worth around $12000 AUD for the rest.

It is a lot of money but it is also the trip of a lifetime with our 3 dc.

me23 · 03/06/2007 13:08

nothing! unfortunately can't afford it. Hopefully one day!

Blandmum · 03/06/2007 13:10

THis year we have spent a lot. Much more than usual, but this is because of dh being ill.I would say £4000 to date, with another £2000 for the summer. But this year is exceptional.

Last year we spent more like £2000 and had 5 trips away, but we did most of that camping.

Can't camp this year as dh needs a proper bed and bathroom etc

Some of you seem really good at hunting down baragins. Wish I could get into camping, it sounds fun, and is cheap. Unfortunately living in the colder wetter end of the UK, I am just not that brave

I would say around the same as Xenia - but this year will be a few grand more as DH and I are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary this year.

It is a lot of money, I know, but holidays are one of our few extravagances.

So far we've had a weeks skiing in Colorado, a few days in the Isle of Wight, we're off to Centre Parks in June, Orlando in July for 2.5 weeks, Florence in August, Cornwall in September (for a long weekend), then will do something in October for half term and possibly something at Christmas/New Year.

allgonebellyup · 03/06/2007 13:16

dont do camping either! but always manage to find cheap and cheerful things! just takes a bit of searching, but that is the fun part anyway!

allgonebellyup · 03/06/2007 13:17

Soapbox - HOW many holidays this summer??

Wotz · 03/06/2007 13:19

lol at some of these - has it kicked off yet?

soapbox · 03/06/2007 13:21

It is one more than usual the visit to Florence is for our anniversary.

The Sept Cornwall visit is to a friend who owns a holiday house down there, so only costing flights and car hire.

Having said that I still have to fit in a visit to Scotland to see my mother - perhaps we should do that at Oct half term

allgonebellyup · 03/06/2007 13:23

Am still

thought i was lucky going to 2 different places(one of them in UK though)this year!

soapbox · 03/06/2007 13:24

I am regretting posting TBH - it does sound a tad poncy

allgonebellyup · 03/06/2007 13:25

Am also of your gorgeous looking freckly children!!

but will give myself a break as am 15yrs younger than yourself so hopefully will be going on 24 holidays a year when i am your age!

Judy1234 · 03/06/2007 13:26

Actually 2 weeks in August in the Caribbean for 6 people (4 adults) is quite good value with Sunsail including flights, food, childcare etc Skiing seems to cost us about £7k but it's just the sheer volume of numbers of having 5 children. It's quite a good way to get student children sticking with the family if you pay for them to go on nice holidays so it sort of aids family cohesiveness too not that we've booked anything this summer yet.

ChasingSquirrels · 03/06/2007 13:27

For the last few years we have done a week in cornwall in srping/early summer, cottage cost £300-£400, petrol to get there, back and around when down there £200, meals etc £200-£250 (we have pasties for lunch and pub meals in the evening), days out maybe £100 max (we do something every day, but at least half were tesco clubcard deals). Ekk, this is meant to be a cheap holiday but that is getting on for £1k.

We have then had 2 weeks away in sep/oct, probably £1,500 for the hols then eats and spends when away, maybe £500.

don't particularly budget for them, have the spare cash and use it.

misdee · 03/06/2007 13:50

2005 i took the kids to a friends caravan for £60 for the weekend, and £50 spending money.

later that year went to haven for £95 and spent about £150-ish.

2006 was butlins, it was £380 for 10 of us, and i took £400 spending money but had planned to do clothes shopping whilst up there as they have some good outsize shops

I also have spent £180+ for weeks at harefield accomdation, plus food and drink as no real cooking facilities.

this year, well so far nothing, and nothing planned. We have done lots of trips out, and am getting annual passes for the zoo and maybe the farm, just because we cant go on holidays, and these places are easy to get to and good days out for the children. so thats £300 on passes, if that counts?

Blondilocks · 03/06/2007 13:59

Probably too much. Always pay for them at the time of booking so when I go I only have the spending money to think of.

Quattrocento · 03/06/2007 14:09

Well we tend to have a week in the UK in a cottage somewhere - the idea being to get the dc's understand a bit about the country they were born in - and that costs around £1,000 including spending money.

We then tend to have three weeks away in the summer, usually France. This costs a lot in terms of flights and car hire (around £1k) and then villa rental would be on top of that, and would cost around £5k-£6k although we have got several friends/relatives with houses that they like to share. Spending money would be around another £2k.

Borrowing villas sounds like scrounging (sorry it is scrounging, in fact) but it is tricky because of course you have to do something totally appropriate for someone who's just saved you a large amount of money. We bought our last hosts a robot for the pool and it cost around £2k, made some nice things for them, and stocked up the booze.

If we are very lucky we then get away for another week somewhere, possibly a package for a week, somewhere warm. That would cost around £2k to £3k including spending money.

So anywhere between £10k and £13k.

lovelymoo · 03/06/2007 14:23

we spend quite a lot on holidays each year.
So far we have had 3weeks at disney in florida, a week in devon we have got a week booked at centre parks this month two weeks booked to turkey in august a weekend away in september with friends.
This is more than a normal year but we only have two DD's

Judy1234 · 03/06/2007 14:46

And when my oldest son was 6 weeks we had a week at Butlins which they really enjoyed. They were 3, 1 and the baby. I don't think the money really makes the difference of whether you enjoy it or not.

misdee · 03/06/2007 14:48

xenia, cheap holidays are good!

out most extravagent holiday was dh and myself, lake district for 2nights at £250, that was dinner bed and breakfast.

was heaven, no kids, would love to go back, again minus the kids.

the kids love holiday camps. i am trying to persuade dh after his op, to go in on a static caravan with the rest of my family. he is saying no lol.

DrNortherner · 03/06/2007 15:10

Our last family holiday was in 2004. Since then we moved house and have not been able to afford a proper holiday although we have had weekends away and a weekend in France in beteween.

This year we have 9 days in Spain planned and a weekend in London. And we are so looking forward to both.

These are don echeaply though as staying in BIL's apartment in Marbella then thanks to my job I get excellent hotel rates which we are taking advantage of in london.
