hard to say really

our only holidays are either camping (and we do CHEAP camping, we are talking £12 a night max for 4 of us), we don't have lots of kit and don't actually spend any more on food than we would at home

or they are grandparents.

noddyholder · 03/06/2007 15:15

Had 3 weeks in the greek islands in 2005 cost about 3k for three of us.last yr nothing This yr going to corsica that is 1k but need about another 700 spending money I never begrudge anyone holidays. When I was too ill for holidays it was the thought of them that kept me going at times. If you can afford it go for it you never know when something can come along to stop you going

misdee · 03/06/2007 15:16

filly i am [anvy] i know you are what??!

but ooo a night camping would be heaven.

expatinscotland · 03/06/2007 15:16

About £500. We go self-catering caravan or cottage and do cheap stuff for entertainment.

misdee · 03/06/2007 15:16

even lol

fillyjonk · 03/06/2007 15:39

misdee i have NO idea what you are talking about there

but camping is FABULOUS

and actually, the cheap sites are the best, you don't want to be tripping over carpets and gnomes and plastic flowers

LilRedWG · 03/06/2007 15:50

It varies. This year (a year in which we should really be being frugal) we are having more holidays than ever.

We went to CenterParcs in Februray for four nights (found a discount code and it was £180 for accomodation).

Just got back from a week on a narrow boat with my sister and her family and our share was £500 for the boat.

We're going camping for a few days in August (again with my sister). Not sure of cost yet as sister is booking.

Two weeks in Eygpt in December for our tenth wedding anniversary. Cost approx £1200 all-inclusive.

In the past we've had one exotic holiday a year, but that was pre-DD. Next year we plan to try for CenterParcs again in Febuary (discounts allowing) and then PIL are taking us away in May to Cyprus - they are both 60 next year and instead of having a big holiday they are taking us and SIL & family away.

So all in all we are extremely lucky!

misdee · 03/06/2007 15:51

gnomes??

i loved camping as a child. we had this massive 7berth tent that looked liek a house. we spent a lot of time on holiday camp sites.

i do miss it, but atm holidays are the stuff dreams are made of.

Sorry, can't actually answer this thread without falling foul of this thread:

here!!

jellyjelly · 03/06/2007 16:00

I had a paid for holiday all inclusive by my parents this yr which i have had.

I hope to have a very cheap caravan holiday in the uk where i will take all the basics and things like salt pepper/liquid all the stuff as it racks up for about 70.00 for the caravan. I had one of these breaks last yr and it was good but was when we were a family so was a bit different to being a single parent now. I get to read more now.

LilRedWG · 03/06/2007 16:00

handlemecarefully. I think there is a difference between gloating about how much stuff costs and answering a genuine question. A answered because Seb1 politely asked a question and seems genuinely interested, but I'd never say otherwise and definitely do not swan around saying, "ooo, my house cost xx".

handlemecarefully · 03/06/2007 16:03

Yes there is LilRed - the world of difference is called 'inverse snobbery' - it's okay if you've spend a frugal amount to share the information, but not if you have spent what others deem to be an excessive amount (then you button it). It's an interesting social phenomenom (to me at least)

beckybrastraps · 03/06/2007 16:09

Ah. Just like the handbag wars in the Labour Party ATM...

chocolateteapot · 03/06/2007 16:14

Our holidays are generally a week in a cottage in Devon for somewhere between £500 & £700 a week in the summer holidays. This year we are trying camping in Cornwall but are cheating and going to a ready put up tent which is £150 for a week in August. Spending money is generally £500 a week. Whilst DS is still fairly little I can't really be bothered with going abroad and also there are so many lovely places near where we live it's like being on holiday in the summer anyway.

We've both got relatives who live abroad (within Europe ) so might think about going to visit next year but will have to work out a budget and save first as have a lot of house stuff going on which seems to suck money into a black hole.

handlemecarefully · 03/06/2007 16:15

Yep, here's a discussion on it
timesonline.typepad.com/comment/labour_party/index.html 2nd article down

but I digress.

Answering the question, I think we spend around 10% of household income (pre tax not post tax) on holidays

This year:

Weekend at the Lanesborough in London

Centreparcs for 5 days

1 week in a villa in the South of France

and, a week in Dubai

donnie · 03/06/2007 16:15

between 3 and 6k per annum.

beckybrastraps · 03/06/2007 16:20

HMC - is it one of those super duper 7* hotels in Dubai?

beckybrastraps · 03/06/2007 16:21

Or is it only 6*?

Or is that an impertinent question?

Not meaning to be. Just wondering what they're like...

handlemecarefully · 03/06/2007 16:22

I wouldn't like to say.......

handlemecarefully · 03/06/2007 16:22
Wink
Judy1234 · 03/06/2007 16:22

Money, politics and religion are supposed to be the topics you shouldn't discuss if you want to avoid arguments as my mother used to say.

Margaret Beckett is liked because of her caravan holidays in part and 2 Jags what's his name not ;Blair - yes it was free in return for no favours holidays plc is not so much liked for that. Labour politicians who worked their way up from nothing some like to spend a lot of handbags etc - the aspiration, nouveau type of thing and others regard the ostentation as appalling. Others more right wing like to show off how little they spend. It's all good fun.

beckybrastraps · 03/06/2007 16:23

We camped last weekend and our tent literally blew over it was so windy.

So dreaming of 6* luxury....

nogoes · 03/06/2007 16:23

Max of £1k per year at the moment. About £5k before we had ds. at those who spend £25k! But if I had the money I would too!

handlemecarefully · 03/06/2007 16:24

We go camping too beckybrastraps - but strictly fair weather campers!

beckybrastraps · 03/06/2007 16:25

I know I would!

But I bet dh would still want to do the camping in a gale bit
