Ah wrong choice of word!
Not gambling at all, it doesn't interest me in that sense.
So my lay won, and I now have a healthy liability in total from the weekends betting.

I have nearly £38 in mr green but I can't withdrawal it until I've played my £40 bonus.

MrsOs · 16/08/2017 21:10

Ive just started and made a silly mistake tonight! In putting my first free bets on i mistakenly put a £5 normal on too.. in the end i was so confused about what to then put on the exchange i didnt bother so if qpr dont win i have lost £5 and all my free bets.. not sure what i should have done but didnt want to lose my money in the exchange by putting £56 at risk! I feel very nervous and scared of messing up that im messing up!

titchy · 16/08/2017 21:27

You can out several exchange bets on which is what you should have done. (And yes with some bookies it's really easy to put a real money bet on rather than the free one.)

If that happens again, lay your free bets, then lay your real bets using the appropriate calculator. Even on the same bet it's fine - I do it quite often if I've got several free bets from several bookies and I put them on the same event at different times.

Titchy so what should i have done? I was to put 4x £5 bets on qpr to win and £14.43 i think on the exchange but because i put £20 free bet and £5 real money i didnt know what to do. Should i have put the £14.43 and then done a calculator for my real £5 and put an exchange bet for that too?

MrsOs · 16/08/2017 21:40

And i dont understand talk on the last page about lay bets being rejected... what does that mean?

titchy · 16/08/2017 22:10

Yes you should have done exactly that - one lay bet for the £20 freebies and a second for the accidental bet.

Lay bets - you're effectively offering to take someone else's back bet - so if no one is betting you won't get it layed and it'll get rejected once the game starts. So make sure there's exchange money available - that's the amount in £ underneath the lay odds.

MrsOs · 16/08/2017 22:21

Thanks titchy thats really helpful! In terms of there being enough money available for the lay bet (the £ underneath) does that amount have to be more than my bet or more than the liability if i were to lose?

MrsOs · 16/08/2017 22:24

And what are the best sites to use. Ive tried profit accumulator but not signed up yet as its £17 a month and ive already messed up after just two goes.. but im sure there are others that might be cheaper? Any recommendations really helpful. Thanks

HeyRoly · 16/08/2017 22:30

I was confused by the £ by the lay odds too! But it relates to the size of your lay bet, not the size of the liability.

Also don't necessarily be put off if there isn't enough money available in the exchange at that moment in time - if there's still hours before kick off (or horse race, etc) there's plenty of time for your bet to be matched.

Only exception is with Smarkets who will leave your bet unmatched IF the odds go up and don't return to the odds you placed your lay bet at, iyswim. Betfair will match your bet as soon as money becomes available regardless of odds changing (except for in play bets, but don't worry about those yet Grin)

You'll learn as you go along, I promise!

I'm a fan of Oddsmonkey, personally. It's £15 a month but I wouldn't be able to MB without it.

titchy · 16/08/2017 22:33

What roly said - money available is size of lay bet not liability, and I use OM too - they have a free trial for a month.

OP posts:
MrsOs · 16/08/2017 22:34

But whwt happens if there isnt money available for the lay bet and youve placed the bookies bet? Isnt that then at risk?

titchy · 16/08/2017 23:04

Yes! Which is why you check first. However straightforward bets on straightforward events will almost certainly be matched at the exchange, even if you place the bet a week ahead before anyone's thought about it. So a home win/draw/away win bet on a premiership football match will have tons of cash available at some point. A both teams to score, 4 corners and over 5.5 goals bet on the Hawaiian 3rd division will never have any exchange money.

MrsOs · 17/08/2017 07:19

Thanks titchy.. what is the exchange people use most? I'm finding on the iPad there is no search function on betting sites or on the betfair exchange which makes it harder to find some of the football matches! And is it a good idea to have a float of £100 sitting in the exchange ready?

xlovekillsx · 17/08/2017 09:08

Hi everyone! I tried matched betting earlier this year but didn't have enough time to really understand it. Used oddsmonkey last night and they explained everything so clearly! So here I am :) Hoping to make a little extra money as I'm moving to the States later this year and it would be nice to have a little extra 'back up fund' in case it takes a while to find a job.

How does everyone find the bingo offers? Have you made any money with them? :)

Clarkson35 · 17/08/2017 21:40

Is this an Oddsmonkey promo thread? No way I'm giving them £180/year of my hard earned cash.

MrsOs · 17/08/2017 22:53

So what do you use Clarkson35?

Clarkson35 · 18/08/2017 04:02

A site I don't have to pay for Smile. These threads seem to be taken over with employees of paid sub sites drumming up business. Winning Strategy (co UK) is one we've recently found which has the software/guides etc. Costs nothing so you get to keep all of your profit

Oops sorry got posting twice. My 5 year old had just woken me up and got in our bed. Madam Gothell nightmares!

HeyRoly · 18/08/2017 10:38

I'm not an Oddsmonkey employee Hmm

I just think that a free site couldn't possibly have the same breadth of coverage and functionality as a paid for site, otherwise everyone would use a free one.

Are you a staffer for Winning Strategy, Clarkson, because you seem pretty angry that people use competitor sites? Grin

LemonadeWithACherry · 18/08/2017 11:34

I suspected that a while back HeyRoly Hmm

I'm sticking with OddsMonkey anyway, the guides and oddsmatcher are invaluable. Along with the FREE profit accumulator and its fab fb page with Jon's advice. (I don't work for OM or PA)

HeyRoly · 18/08/2017 11:46

Six posts promoting Winning Strategy and/or slagging off subscription sites? Hmm.

Clarkson35 · 18/08/2017 15:53

Winning Strategy is a free site. I doubt they could afford me Smile, and I'd be pretty cheap. I suppose that's the thing about free sites that generate no income. No one really benefits from promoting them unlike Oddsmonkey. I just get sick of people pretending to help and then slipping the old "Oddsmonkey have been great. Here's a free trial."

HeyRoly · 18/08/2017 17:30

I just get sick of people pretending to help and then slipping the old "Oddsmonkey have been great. Here's a free trial."

But I've been doing exactly that a LOT on this thread (and previous), and I haven't been "pretending" to help in order to get an Oddsmonkey plug in. I've just been recommending a site I find invaluable.

I find your attitude very strange and sneery.

Clarkson35 · 18/08/2017 17:35

I used to be a member of PA until I found Winning Strategy and I've made over £1200 in the last month. My point is that there IS another way than paying for subscription sites. Each to their own but for beginners, they shouldn't be conned into paying fees.

Next stop rental agency fees and energy firms :)

Anyway, I'm done with this debate. Pay if you want. Just please stop acting like you're helping people when in fact you're driving up subscription money.
