charliecat · 01/03/2007 20:48

Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

grouchyoscar · 17/04/2007 16:18

Told TC peeps about my DLA but as it's just the mobility component it wont alter my payments...ah well, at least they know about it now.

The DLA is magic tho, I was able to get a free bus pass and a council discount card. It means I pay 1/2 price if I go swimming etc. And it has a facility that I can take a responsible adult to look after me, EG, if I want DS to go, DH can come along for nothing! Plus it offers 10% discount at the local school uniform outlet.

DH finds outy if he gets paid this Friday. He's hopeful it will be a positive outcome. We've managed to stay in the black this month after all the major bills so I may have paniced too soon

MrsWho · 17/04/2007 20:11

Well done at staying out of the red!Fingers crossed fo ryour dh getting paid

I have slipped a bit this month not sure where but prob 'cos of easter hols.
I need to phone TC to check why my money has dropped by £20 a week!

Bananaknickers · 18/04/2007 16:32

Right it's ok to cut back here and there ,but have you any tips for cost cutting childrens birthday parties please?

MrsWho · 18/04/2007 19:15

How old?
How many people?

don't go for the wacky warehouse type places as they are £6 ish pp , local church hall and DIY food and games.

GreedyGecko · 18/04/2007 21:53

ds1's 5th party cost me less than £100. There were 32 invited.

We hired the local hall - £25.

Food from Tesco - £40

Plates & cups etc were just boring Tesco value white ones, but tbh I don't think theyreally care what picture there is.

Party bag tat & prizes- £30 (I just did small colouring books (30p each in hawkins bazaar), with a few crayons (30p for a pack of 50 in Tesco) with a small piece of tat in the bags, prizes were little bits I found in the cheap baskets in Tesco)

fsmail · 19/04/2007 22:16

We are doing a science party for my son. It is going to cost us about £30 for science experimentation kids (chemistry set, goo set and making a buzz set) which will also be part of my son's birthday pressie. I managed to find disposable lab coats for £1.20 each and the rest of the equipment will come from our recycling box. A free science party can be found on \link{http://www.scienceyear.com/parents/index.html?page=/parents/party_time/index.html}

They also have ideas for food and everything. Nina and the Neurones can also give you a clue.

ska · 20/04/2007 12:17

science party great idea!

We just had my 8 year old dd's party. We invited 8 friends and held a 'disco' and dvd party. I made 8 shape biscuits (cutter 95p) and my kids decorated them. A friend made the cake and I paid her for ingredients. We had all the stuff for the party itself. The girls got a party bag with 3 things in it costing £1.50 each in total plus a small easter egg (BOGOF!). 1 bag of snack size chocs for prizes for games in the park (£2.88). Pizzas were BOGOF from tesco so £2.29 for 2 and I bought 8, used 6. Two tubs of soft scoop icecream. 4 tubes smarties, 2 tubes icecream sauce, 1 pack flakes, i tub 100s and 1000s all for home made icecream 'bar'. Used our own crockery so nothing to pay for there. I think it cost around £50 in all.
the thing we did last year was 7 friends to the saturday morning £1 cinema and then to pizza hut afterwards (£3.49 buffet each)

ska · 20/04/2007 12:19

generally we're not doing very well. Lots of unexpected (well unbudgeted) expenses (new specs needed etc). But I got paid a big chunk (I work self employed) and I have used it to reduce OD to nearly 0 and am now trying to 'save' money from this point on. It felt more positive but I may go squeaky when the tax bill comes in!

grouchyoscar · 20/04/2007 14:15

DH still not been paid for March but there is good news on the horizon...His boss signed 3 new contracts yesterday so there is work to do and cash coming in. He should get paid at the end of the month (please god)

I've saved £175 and £55 for DS this month but I've overspent too. There was getting the summer uniform and got a great deal on a Brio Polar express train and as it's $2 to £1 I had to get it for DS's Xmas box. Plus I've stocked up on bargain compost for the garden. Only gone over by £15 I reckon so I can cover it all. Drop savings to £150

So fingers crossed for DH for next week

charliecat · 20/04/2007 19:17

Fingers crossed for your DH getting paid.
Another cheap party idea, you local cinema ahould do older movies for £2-£2.50 a person.
A rucksack full of snacks and drinks and a couple of huge thingys of popcorn and it can save you a fortune
I havent had an MSN message...think I know who you are tho...text you earlier
My £9.50 holiday went well. Place was nice and clean, even if it the decor and bits were a bit tatty...we had 4 great sunny days away and the main expense was wetherspoons every day.
I am a fat pig now

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 20/04/2007 19:38

Royally f*cked up this month.

I got lax because things had been going so well and I had been being so good I thought i didn't need to concentrate anymore

Jelley · 20/04/2007 19:51

I've been really slack, too

I'm still saving £1 in my tin, which is feeling nice and heavy (ready for the summer holidays)
We haven't gone over our overdraft limit since I claimed back the charges.

But...

I need to do dps tax return, which will give us a big bill, and we will owe the tax credit people more money.

We now have a car with no mot and tax that is just about to run out, which dp insists he will get back on the road, And another car which is due mot and tax next month.

And another huge gas and electricity bill to pay.

charliecat · 20/04/2007 20:42

Oh god Get back on the tight wagon. It does go shit faced and you do spent a lot when your not looking dont you?
Deduct your pension contributions from your TC forms thread on MSE here for you to make sure its the right lot lol
