charliecat · 01/03/2007 20:48

Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Arse arse arse! Some idiot pulled out in front of dp this morning. Thats £150 excess we could do without right now. OK we'll get it back, but not for a few months. And I'm going to have to get a taxi to & from work tomorrow night & sunday because the headlights are smashed. I'll be claiming for that.

dd1 wants to go swimming (cannonsis free or local pool only pay for me)they want the aquarium(going with their Dad) and the park!
Want to have a couple of days off somewhere though!

GreedyGecko · 31/03/2007 10:26

We've got dentist for boys planned.

There's loads of free stuff 'round here. I'm in Portsmouth & only 5 mins walk from the beach, thats a whole day throwing stones! The dockyard is free to get into, can have a wander round looking at the boats. Canoe Lake with a picnic (staying away from the evil swans!), Natural History museum. The City Museum always has a childrens exhibition on during school hols, and visiting friends. There's also a field opposite our house, so can spend a morning/afternoon there with a ball/kite.

nikkie · 31/03/2007 13:50

We have decided to do a car boot sale next w/e!

ska · 31/03/2007 20:41

good luck. we have thought about that so do let us know how you get on. Especially the sorts of things people buy.

charliecat · 31/03/2007 21:41

My mum does lots of bootsales, seems to sell lots of tights and large sized shoes to old men

Have told the kids to sort their stuff out but dd1 has latched onto the idea and wants her own pot of money !

So far have some books/jigsaws/dvds that won't ebay for much and am going to try my energy saving lightbulbs as I have about 30!
Also some odd bits of stuff ,couple of bags, cds clothes.
Going with my Mam to split the parking money and her car is bigger than mine !

grouchyoscar · 02/04/2007 16:55

Well it's a new month and I managed to save £175 last month for me and £55 for DS. I opened a couple of high interest accounts and I feel like I have a good handle on mine and DS finances

But

I paid off the Joint account OD in February and guess what...DH's boss hasn't paid him on time last month or even paid him this month Why when I get things going in the right direction does DH's job constantly pull the rug from under us?

Ah well, at least this time, we have back up (errrh, that would be me then!)

Please help me stay debt free

charliecat · 02/04/2007 17:06

Well done on the saving grouchy How come dps job are not paying him?????!!!!!!!!
What bank accounts have you got? I opened a nationwide flexiaccount, and then an e-saver with them. Got 4p interest in 3 days on £100, I KNOW its a piddly amount, but for 3 days I was impressed

MrsWho · 02/04/2007 22:16

My o/d this month is down to £500 before I got paid(used to be nearer £1000 ) so am on the right track, school hols will mess it up a bit though!

MrsWho · 02/04/2007 22:17

for Grouchy.

grouchyoscar · 03/04/2007 16:45

Got my money early this month so I've bought DS some summer uniform and stuffed 150 pounds away before it gets nibbled at.

Sorted out DS wardrobe and apart from a couple of pairs of jeans he's fine for clothes for a year or so. (my charity shop addiction pays off really)Plus I'm fine for clobber myself atm too so I don't have to worry there. Hey when your style is 'no style' thge season's trends don't matter huh.

I will beat the red!

(ps, Dh STILL hasn't been paid

MrsWho · 03/04/2007 19:17

When does the tax credit nmoney happen?
Mine was on a Monday then got paid last Friday, so what is happening now?

charliecat · 03/04/2007 19:54

Quite a few people got paid weirdly last week. No idea why and when you will get paid again!
