Fay - the identification methods used weren't really derogatory. I don't think I actually ever mentioned a certain person by her feature (that she highlighted herself and basically it just caught on).

Other references normally were referring to property (which is not unkind) or outdoor sports (again, not unkind) - they were at this point our only way of communicating.

Previously we had been able just to say names. And, as I'm sure you're aware, naming the names of public on a forum is in no way illegal.

When we could no longer use names we used initials.

When we couldn't use initials we used nicknames.

This was not a bullying tactic. And I feel that calling these threads out for such reasons are hugely unfair. I don't know how much you have seen but there has been a massive shift in the way that MLMs can operate since the start of this campaign, not to mention the Sunday Times article. Did you see it?

While one individual may have taken umbrage to her chosen name, there was absolutely no "witch hunt" or harassment. No malice towards her or her looks. I know that this is the way in which she portrays it but I feel that is because she doesn't want to draw attention to these threads and/or the real reasons people were discussing her. Also anyone on the outside wouldn't even have known who was being discussed, although I know that doesn't make it any better in terms of it upsetting the individual.

Twunk · 14/03/2016 23:05

The thing is we saw all this happening to friends or family. How do you fight this cancer? Sexy Rexy is sitting pretty in his Arizona ranch counting his ill-gotten gains. The company itself treads a very fine "compliance" line and makes sure that all the risk - ALL OF IT - is on the suckers who buy into this crap.

They are conned into this crap.

And it's the Uber-bots with thousands of followers who encourage the "fake it till you make it" lifestyle that ruins lives. It's not some benign fun that a few women do for pocket money - people leave jobs for this shit. Vulnerable women have with young babies think they can stay at home rather than go back to a real job with real pay and benefits.

It's a fucking scandal and you're worried that one of the chief manipulators was told by some "middle aged women" that she has prominent eyebrows? (Something she herself pointed out?).

dolly you need to upgrade to an iiPhone Grin

Patzy85 · 14/03/2016 23:07

And bot isn't meant to be derogatory either, it is simply referring to the robotic scripted nature of their posts and the way that they target prospects.

Bananasmel · 14/03/2016 23:07

Anyway Laminator bot , the woman who tried to recruit me...she hero worships a certain top bot (Austin Healey - not her real name but well done on guessing correctly...) But I've found out that Laminator bot is losing money rapidly. She still works her J. O . B though so hasn't sacked the boss. The boss being her now ex who got fed up with the Forever thing. Awkward.
But in all seriousness, I feel sorry for her and wonder what caused her to be sucked into it.

Inarightpickleandchutney · 14/03/2016 23:09

Anyone know about my herbalife question? I'm curious bit don't want to comment!

Twunk · 14/03/2016 23:11

Eyes knows all about Herbal-life pickle - I glaze over slightly forget the detail

throwingpebbles · 14/03/2016 23:11

eyes is very subdued tonight. Am I the only one imagining him surrounded by a tragicomically large cheese platter and some cavorting Bond girls with one indulgent eye on the thread - watching his adherents all reciting his anti-MLM scripts so fluently?

Twunk · 14/03/2016 23:11

It's under investigation and severe pressure in the US. We're hoping it will topple.

Bananasmel · 14/03/2016 23:12

I admit I did ask the lady with the fabulous brows if her trip included a visit to a pyramid. But that was not bullying it was just my stupid sense of humour. Anyway she banned me from her business page. So no more of those shenanigans.

throwingpebbles · 14/03/2016 23:12

Meanwhile, over in utah ....

Inarightpickleandchutney · 14/03/2016 23:12

Okay, thanks.

throwingpebbles · 14/03/2016 23:12

Oh bananasmel, I "know" you now, you are hilarious!

Aloedofcrap · 14/03/2016 23:13

Fay The fact is many MLMers use their lifestyles as a way to encourage people to join their business.

This business is not built up on selling products or genuine business services but are purely built around recruiting more and more people to their down lines to feed the pyramid.

If you were about selling products you would not want to introduce a whole load of competitors/distributors into your local area.

If you are selling your skills as a business coach this should be done on the back of many years of experience within the real business world and usually with many years of high level studies such as MA's and years of experience within a variety of corporate settings not a few years of listing inspirational memes on the Internet.

Toobusytowee · 14/03/2016 23:13

Regarding the term 'bot', we needed an all encompassing term because were going to be talking about the people. We could have gone for 'adherent' but that seemed too formal and we were not comfortable with that sort of term at the beginning. 'Victim' could have been another option, but then, that term could also apply to the people being prospected.

We couldn't say 'business owner/ glambassador/ consultant/ advisor etc etc etc' because we would get thumb ache with every post.

We needed a term that described the group we were talking about. We were talking in the beginning about our friends that had been recruited into an MLM and how their personalities changed. We were talking about our friends. We were not being mean. Just lamenting at what was going on. They had been turned into robots, speaking in scripts and behaving out of character.

Bananasmel · 14/03/2016 23:13

I have a Herbalife bot on my FB. I've known him since he was about 12 so I don't want to delete him but he really is a prolific plugger of crap.

Bananasmel · 14/03/2016 23:16

I also drew attention to Rexy's anti Gay stance on another bots page but never got a reply.

darceybussell · 14/03/2016 23:17

In fairness, 'bot' has been used to describe MLMers long before anyone here used it. In the 70s/80s/90s people described Amway people as 'ambots' all the time, for all the same reasons.

FleeBee · 14/03/2016 23:19

It's a shame the Bots don't like their nicknames. The spice girls made their fortunes out if theirs & one was named scary. That got to be worse than on this Fred? Plus Baby must be about 43 now.... If only Smash Hits had thought of them

penny1ane · 14/03/2016 23:19

I think the term 'bot' is perfectly fine to use.

After all, it has been approved by Forever themselves ;-)
