Broke for a month

Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 21:05

i know the way these threads can go - I am not asking for money and while I think it is incredibly sweet when people offer I won't accept

Sorry for above disclaimer.

Have namechanged as I'm a bit embarrassed and my ex stalks me on here.

We've no money. Well, £40. That's to get through to the end of the month.

We have no oven, or microwave. We do have a toaster.

No access to credit.

Fuel costs are high due to having to take my son to school. Not sure if there's a way around this. (He will hopefully be starting at a new school which is local in 2016 but for now it's tough.)

Fussy cats need food.

Argh. I am partly posting for advice, and also partly for emotional sounding off as I'm fed up of thinking about money.

I didn't mean to suggest you should share your full circumstances - just saying why others as well as me may have assumed you rented not owned. Totally understand no need to divulge everything to total randoms on t'internet (even if we are trying to be helpful!)

Flowers for your new pad.

Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 23:00

No worries squirrels - I am sorry if I sounded sharp. But seriously, moving is VERY expensive.

I don't need much and there's enough food in for children - DS will spend some time at his dad's, anyway.

Because you haven't got enough money to be able to feed them sufficiently, do not have anything to cook on, and don't have enough money to provide heating or hot water, and have said you have no money coming in beyond child benefit. That is a child protection concern, and while I fully appreciate that the children are not at immediate risk, if the situation continues, it would be a worry, hence me saying you need to access statutory services that are available (welfare fund/crisis grants/Eat Sleep Play/Food Bank).

SurlyCue · 11/11/2015 23:01

Ok do you have any credit cards, could you ask your bank for an overdraft, ask for a break on the mortgage payment for this month. Are you in the credit union? Speak to the benefits office about a loan. Speak to your GP about referral to a food bank.

Also, random fact but you can boil eggs in a kettle. Not sure if any use but my friend who was in prison taught me Grin

NoSquirrels · 11/11/2015 23:02

YY to moving. Been there, got the t-shirt, rowed with DH about it only just now with waving of bank statements!

Ok, so really just fuel, you reckon? Can you minimise petrol costs by hanging out in your old area during school hours, so cutting the trips in half, and saving on heating/electric in the day?

Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 23:03

Of course there's heating and hot water. Where did I say there was not? They have food and yes I don't have anything to cook on but that isn't an insurmountable problem, just means some slightly odd meals. The things you list you have to be eligible for and I am not

OP posts:
Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 23:04

I did NOT know that surly, and I will not ask how you know Grin but great! DD loves boiled eggs on toast :)

Yeah, I guess I could do that - long day but doable :)

How did you manage to buy a house with no access to credit? I have access to credit but can't buy a mortgage. Couldn't you ask your bank for an emergency overdraft of £100, to see you through?

Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 23:09

I would really prefer to stay anonymous beebar, if you don't mind - thanks.

*can't get a mortgage

Op, what kind of food are your dc eating at the moment? How long have you all been without hot meals?

Beebar · 11/11/2015 23:12

Get a microwave. Buy everything value to see you through. When's payday? Do you think your employer might give you a small advance if you asked?

SurlyCue · 11/11/2015 23:12

You boil the kettle 3 times to boil the egg. Also if you turn your toaster on its side you can put cheese on the bread and have grilled cheese on toast.

Long shot but i'm guessing you dont have a slow cooker?

I'll bet there are websites for cooking without a cooker. I'll go have a look.

Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 23:13

Cereal, toast, fruit, biscuits, yoghurt, milkshake, custard, rice pudding.

Beebar · 11/11/2015 23:14

Sorry, I see you haven't started your job yet.

Beebar · 11/11/2015 23:15

Have you tried using a foodbank? Think you'll need referral from gp

NotTheSpiceOfLife · 11/11/2015 23:15

Which area of the country are you in? That won't out you, and there might be someone nearby that can help out with some stuff?

Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 23:16

Those flatbreads with cream cheese, pasta in a pot things, trifle, tuna mayo sandwiches, tinned fruit, battenberg, crispbread

Relentlesslyintherealworld · 11/11/2015 23:17

Please do talk to the school. I am a teacher and I know my school would always rally around (confidentially) for any parents in need, no matter how temporary.

Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 23:17

I wouldn't accept it honestly spice, I don't want anybody thinking this is a begging thread as its not.

OP posts:
Temporarilyskint · 11/11/2015 23:17

I couldn't relentlessly, I just couldn't. But you sound very caring.

I won't involve SS luxy, that's just asking for trouble, same with involving the school(s) or GP. People just make assumptions that aren't true. Plus, there's actually physically getting to the food bank which is another problem in itself.

OP posts:
flossietoot · 11/11/2015 23:22

You also don't have to be on benefits to access the welfare fund- it is administered by local councils, and provides for a whole manner of situations. So I really would be surprised if you are not eligable. You would at least have a cooker and they provide transport costs. If you are a lone parent, I would try Gingerbread for additional support.

Relentlesslyintherealworld · 11/11/2015 23:22

I do care! Ok, if we cannot persuade you to ask for help, what exactly is it you have to buy between now and the end of the month? Just food and petrol? Have you got much in the cupboards? Are the children happy to be having different teas- could be a bit of an adventure! Do they get a hot dinner at school?

Are you getting child maintenance from your ex? Are you on friendly enough terms for him to help out?

Sorry, I have just totally bombarded you with questions there!
