I'm also here because I was looking for answers to help a loved one. It is clear that directly challenging a loved one or mocking the 'amazing business opportunity' simply doesn't work. You fall straight into the negative influence category. It makes me really angry that the only reasoned response seems to be to do nothing. Thus helping the racket to continue.
When I next try and raise the issue with my friend I'm going to just say how concerned I still am, and that I love them dearly and will be there for them whatever happens. The only other angle I can think of is to draw their attention to other similar groups and see if they can see the faults in them.
It would be great to have some professional advice on how to approach a loved one or to find a resource we could point them towards so it didn't seem like a personal attack. If we had a professional resource we could then maybe link from the about section of TVie. Or maybe just link to the 2 threads on MN.
By the way, finding this thread has been great, to find people in a similar situation and also have a laugh about it all. I've also noted that this thread has been linked to from a few other websites as well so we are achieving something.
Pats on the back all around Smile right back to the botwatch!

lazycoo · 09/10/2015 15:39

Hi ambler! I'm sorry you're having to deal with this at such close range.

I agree - a concise resource on this would be really helpful - I don't know if MNHQ would consider...? There is so much good advice in three long threads (I've been suckered into FL, FL thread 2 and FL thread 3) which can be found in money matters. I've linked to in a post on page 2 of this thread. It's a lot of reading though but if you have the time I think you will find stories from others in your shoes and discussions on what works well and what doesn't work so well.

I'm really pleased other sites are linking to this!

kelper · 09/10/2015 16:07

I have a friend who is selling youneeek stuff..... I thought she was really sensible and normal, and now all I get is bollocks about make up that costs a fortune!!
And some of the ways she advertises the products are really cringey Confused
I have a a JP bot as well but she seems to have gone quiet recently, apparently Jp doesn't cure broken limbs....
No FL yet though, which I am a bit sad about!

lastuseraccount123 · 09/10/2015 16:29

imo once they're sucked in it's too late. all i'm hoping is that we can maybe if we're lucky innoculate people from getting sucked in in the first place.

lastuseraccount123 · 09/10/2015 16:32

i agree there's a LOT of great information in the threads. Hmm, maybe someone could go through and bring all the info together? I will add links to our threads to TV today.

lastuseraccount123 · 09/10/2015 16:56

done.

mobiusgeek · 09/10/2015 18:20

Just picked up the last few messages. Loving the memes!! You lot really make me lol, and I am also grateful to have found you! Tiredemma I love that you were defended Grin that's hilarious. Eye did offer a solution as to how we can apparently help others (if we inbox him as he can't publish this info online or something) so I might do that. He also suggested trying to get them to look at how other MLM's operate outside of fl.

I know of one girl who used to do Herbalife though, got out and is now interested in fl. Apparently they have enough differences to warrant fl not being the scam HL is. Hmm classic sucker list personality, clearly - and yet I thought her highly intelligent.

LadyShirazz · 09/10/2015 18:28

Do we have an approximation of how long the bots generally stick at it, before jacking it in...?

And has anyone ever spoken to a reformed bot?

Tiredemma · 09/10/2015 20:21

I wish Dispatches or panorama would pick this up

ForeverLivingMyArse · 09/10/2015 20:43

It would be interesting to see.

Flbotnot · 09/10/2015 20:47

Testing

Tiredemma · 09/10/2015 20:50

OOOOHHHHH

ForeverLivingMyArse · 09/10/2015 20:51

«pulls up a chair»

Flbotnot · 09/10/2015 21:16

Have followed all threads.

Around 17 years ago, I attended one of these events.
I had a baby (SURPRISE!) and a well meaning person (mum) had seen a poster (can't remember where, sorry) looking for people who wanted a fantastic opportunity etc etc. no clue as to what it was about. No clue whatsoever.

She is a sensible woman and she sent it to me in the same spirit that she sent me a clipping from the Guardian asking for people to write 'pass notes' in the Guardian. No one tried to recruit me and mum was just being well meaning.

(Pause to cringe; I still cringe and the baby has now left school)

acatcalledjohn · 09/10/2015 21:17

Right hunz! I have lowered myself to a new really fucking scary level and said "plz hun" to a bot on a local selling page. I need help to respond. I don't know quite when 'to inbox' became a verb, but she has indeed 'inboxed' me the following:

***

Hi!

Here's some info on the business. IT IS SOOO EASY! Absolutely no catch at all. I started this business last month & already earning a full time wage. not kidding!

? It's completely free to join
? Up to 43% mark up on selling products
? instant 5% on your teams sales - rising to 25%
? Unlimited support
? An opportunity to change your current lifestyle
? Flexible - choose your own hours

There are 2 ways to make money; recommending products to friends/family and on social media and building a network of distributors. As its free to join its pretty easy to recruit. We have a fab team support group which is open 24/7 and I would be your mentor to get you up and running.

We have over 200 products, all very affordable and easy to review and promote. Please let me know if your interested and I will send you the link to register, takes about 5 minutes and gives you instant access to your back office with wholesale prices, training videos and lots of support.

Xx

Flbotnot · 09/10/2015 21:23

( I think that said poster may have been in a newsagent)

I rang the number and got utterly love bombed by a woman who somehow (can't really explain) managed to avoid telling me anything at all. She invited me to her house and I went.

(What follows is not snobbery I hope but relevant observation)

Her house was considerably smaller than the one we lived in. The thing that sticks in my mind was the lack of parking. Very cramped accommodation for the size of her family (twin toddlers). (Yes, looking back she had been suckered in herself; husband was very much on board)

lastuseraccount123 · 09/10/2015 21:23

fascinating. an MLM with no name.

Flbotnot · 09/10/2015 21:35

The intensity of the sales pitch was, intense.

The fact that all this magic apparently came from selling aloe Vera was weird, very weird. I questioned and questioned. I don't think that I could sell Evan to a man lost in the Sahara so I really couldn't understand the process and she assured me that I needed to meet other people to understand.

I just couldn't see that anyone including me could make anything by selling this stuff. Her examples of selling were that she had interested her health visitor and all her family and friends (SURPRISE!).

There is no way that I could sell anything to my friends, be it aloe Vera (about which I knew nothing) or weapon

Flbotnot · 09/10/2015 21:36

Dh has literally just turned up to take me to ASK and I am starving.
Will finish when I get back.

(Cringe)

lazycoo · 09/10/2015 21:38

No name, no blame. Reminds me of the illegible juice plus script which tells the bot not to mention the MLM by its name.

cat depending how much nerve you have, I would push this. What does she mean 'no catch'? No such thing. Does she think your head zips up the back?

acatcalledjohn · 09/10/2015 22:24

Probably. I might just pretend it does, lazy! Grin

I might need some help with Hun-speak. First response:

So wot do i do ?? Sign up and start making money when i sell sumthing ? Cud rly do with xtra cash, £2000 salery is not enough too live of atm.

Writing that has really hurt my brain.

acatcalledjohn · 09/10/2015 22:27

I think this is NuSkin.

She's bloody quick at replying. Assume she is currently on her sofa 'working' with a glass of vino. I have an image of a FB selling page glittery shite vino glass...

We can get you signed up and in the team groups for support. You make profit on the items you sell and you make from 5% - 25% on people you recruits sales

What do I say next?

LittleMissStubborn · 09/10/2015 22:43

I have just been happily scrolling through my news feed to suddenly be greeted by the happy smiley face of EC in Paris no less

Damn those fat fingers and the following tab. Blush

The lack of name mention is an interesting one. When I got messaged by a complete random on fb there was no mention of what it was. I simply guessed FL. There is a JP bot currently spamming a local selling board, there is no real mention of who is it, it is only when you click through to her profile that you can conclude, in this case, it is JP.
