he gives me £100 a week to do the food shop. That normally is enough, sometimes just over, sometimes just under, feeds 5 of us for 6 days and kn a saturday dh buys a takeaway.
He thins that this amount is totally unreasonable, and i think its pretty good.

So how much do you spend!
How many of you are there?

Thanks Smile

average £120 a week, that includes toiletries, alcohol and feeding 4 cats and a dog, plus myself, teenage son and younger son. I count the pets as a bit of a luxury but hey ho, cheaper than a husband Smile

Squishylicious · 10/07/2011 18:23

£50-£60 for two adults and a 3yo

redspot · 10/07/2011 19:54

I spend between £40 to £50 a week for myself, two teenagers, two younger children and a dog. This includes everything, all breakfasts, lunches and dinner and snacks.

It's not easy, but helps that as i'm a sahm i have time to look for bargains and cook from scratch. I buy lots of value ranges, no ready meals, make even my own pizza bases. My dog has had to go from biscuits and tins to dried all in one dog food which has saved a lot and thankfully he likes it.

In the past i would spend three times that amount. Still wish i could lol.

SparkleRainbow · 11/07/2011 11:45

£100 at big shop, plus £20 ish during the week mainly on milk and biscuits for the kids. That includes no takeaways, we don't have them, maybe one of two bottles of wine, that is it. We grow our own veggies, and some fruits, we have chickens for eggs, and some meat, I buy no readymeals, make my own bread when I can, and always cook from scratch. Lots of sausages, chicken wings and racks of ribs..... I plan all the meals and almost never throw any food away, except whjat the dc leave on their plates, and that goes into the dogs, cat or chickens depending. That is for 2 adults, and three dc (8,6 and 2)

And it has got so much more expensive in the last few months, it is really, really scary.

TheOriginalFAB · 11/07/2011 11:46

You can't compare as some will buy the cheap ranges and some the expensive fancy ones.

hildathebuilder · 11/07/2011 13:12

We spend about £40-£50 in markets, local shops etc a week and then £100 once a month on line at sainsburys or ocado and about £30 a month from the milk man. That's for 2 adults and a toddler, but we are mainly vegetarian, my DH has lunch provided at work, and wine is not included.

grinningbee · 11/07/2011 14:41

Between £65-£80 here, that's 2 adults and two small dc. Includes nappies and toiletries etc. I cook from scratch mostly and eat a lot of fresh fruit and veg. No wine included in that, although we only have a bottle once in a blue moon now (thank you diet!).

SparkleRainbow · 11/07/2011 17:22

The is true TheoriginalFAB, but it is at least a guide I guess. Mine is buying the cheap ranges in everything except meat which the children are going to eat, where i try not to have to buy the budget range.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 13/07/2011 14:23

scabbysnake - interested to know how on earth do you spend just £25 a week?

scabbysnake · 13/07/2011 21:25

with cheap meals, getting things at different places.
for example a pineapple in my local fruit shop is 39p at the momment so its just going for different options.
i try to do a couple of cheap meals a week like egg on toast with beans/cheese on toast etc.
i make everything from scratch & hardly ever eat meat as it costs so much!
we eat healthy but cheap. we have meals like chickpea curry, jacket pots, bean chilli, homemade soup. lots of beans & lentils! a whole bag of carrotts from asda are 76p and can do me a week of soup for lunch plus adding it to spag bol. i also use it as an extra veg on the side of meals and will grate it if we have jacket spuds then i'll bump it all up with some cheap and cheerful carrott! also can get carrott scones out of them at the end of the week when they start going off.
i normally have porridge or branflakes for breakfast, the boys will have porridge & fruit, weetabix and fruit or eggs.
the boys eat lots of fruit and everything else!
tonight for tea i got 2x kidney beans 16p each in asda, 2x tin tom 25p home bargain, lentils & spices from my cupboard, plus an onion & garlic. had some tortillas 59p again home bargain (gotta love it) and made enchillarders, they were lovely and cheap!oh and a carton of 25p passata to go on top. grated some cheese ontop of the boys and that did the 3 of us plus me for tom night, boys will have omlette and i got 2 tubs for the freezer of the chilli. i served it with salad & yes you guessed grated carrot! also found sweetcorn goes far! but thats a pretty standard meal for us and so cheap but healthy.
i get my milk from iceland for £1 for 4 pints, i figure every bit makes a difference.
it is possible you just have to make a few cut backs like with the meat.

Georgimama · 13/07/2011 21:37

Two adults, one child, two dogs. Varies from around £65 to £100 per week depending on whether stuff like dog food, washing powder, cleaning materials need to be bought. That includes alcohol of which we don't consume that much - maybe a bottle of wine and a few beers a week between us.

Pootles2010 · 14/07/2011 16:24

Frankly no idea. But sainsbury's recently did feed a family of 4 for £50 for a week, that was absolutely bargain basement stuff, and not including anything else - cleaning stuff, toiletries, drink (not just alcohol but tea, coffee juice etc) or feeding animals.

So I'd say £100 pretty reasonable. Show him receipt, ask him which bits he disagrees with?

He may just be living in la-la land - perhaps hasn't done shopping in years, prices have shot up.

hollyhobbie · 14/07/2011 23:23

about £80 per week for 4 of us, often less than that, rarely more.
The milk comes from the milkman, so that's extra.

I shop at Asda, not my favourite supermarket, but I like their 10% guarantee thing, I often get a couple of pounds knocked off the shopping with that.

We could definitely make our shop cheaper, but I like to buy fairtrade, organic, free range, and eco washing powder, dishwash tablets etc etc. We're pretty skint, but I feel I can't quite sell out on all of my principles.

thisisyesterday · 14/07/2011 23:28

we spend around £80-£90 a week, that's for 2 adults and 3 children.

but we also get an Abel and Cole box which is £17

um, if it matters we are vegetarian and don't drink that much, so no meat, no alcohol, the baby is in cloth nappies. I do tend to buy organic though

oh and I bulk-buy my washing powder'softener so that isn't included in my regular shop

duchesse · 14/07/2011 23:28

About £120-130/week for 6-7 of us including lunches for all but 1 of us.

Loshad · 14/07/2011 23:47

£2.50 a week for 6 of us, you all need to try harder, shop smarter !

PhishFoodAddiction · 15/07/2011 07:22

I do an online shop with asda which usually comes in at around £60-£70, plus maybe £15 a week top up mid-week. That is for 2 adults, 2 small dcs and 1 kitten.

I can't believe how much food prices have gone up. Wish DH's wage had risen accordingly!

FootprintsOnTheMoon · 15/07/2011 07:26

£110 p.w. No top ups.

That rarely includes alchohol but does include pet stuff. 2 adults and 3 dc (one in nappies).

Red meat once a week and a free range chicken on Sunday.

FootprintsOnTheMoon · 15/07/2011 07:27

Sorry + £15 veggie box delivery.

naughtymummy · 15/07/2011 07:58

We budget £100 pw.2 adults a 7yo and 5yo. Eat meat 3 times a week, fish once or twice and the rest veggie, usually eat out once. I find that is enough for some luxuries eg: good coffee, real butter juice for the dcs. 18m ago we were doing it for £60 :(

joruth · 15/07/2011 13:52

2 adults 4 children and 2 tods, I cook everything from scratch (tired, tired tired!) spend £200 every 2-2.5 weeks for delivered supermarket shop including household stuff like loo roll and cleaning plus about £15-20 per week for extra fresh fruit and veg between deliveries.we eat mixed veggie meals and carnivorous I shop through web site mysupermarket and on average manage to save £14-18 on an already frugal shop....can't go to Lidl/Aldi from this site though.

rodformyownback · 16/07/2011 15:18

I spend £60-70 per week for 4 of us including nappies and catfood, cleaning products etc. So I guess about £45 on food. Plus we invariably crack and buy a bottle of red wine at the local offy once a week. Scabbysnake I take my hat off to you, you are an inspiration! I've recently discovered value range kidney beans and use them to bulk out just about everything.
We probably have red meat, chicken and fish once a week each but I never buy meat at full price and buy frozen or tinned fish. Other meals are veg, egg, cheese, soya or pulse based. I only ever buy free range chicken - about the only principle I haven't sacrified! I always get one if I go to Aldi as they're only a fiver. Would like to buy them in bulk but not much room in the freezer.
DH gets eggs on the way home from work, there is a little table by the side of the road with an honesty box and they are only £1 for 6 - I'm assuming they're free range. Last week they were all double yolkers - amazing!
Extravagances are mostly for ds1 who some might call picky (he's much better than he used to be though!) These are 2 pots of basil every week (I know I should grow my own but invariably kill it before it's edible), 2 litres Mozzer's own smoothie for £3 and Organix cereal bars, probably 2 packs every 3 weeks. I know I could put my foot down about these extras but it's such a joy to me to see him eat healthy stuff he likes, I would give up buying wine first if I had to!

RainboweBrite · 16/07/2011 23:21

Anywhere between £50 and £100 a week, although the Christmas shop might be closer to £130. That's for 2 adults and 1 child. On average, £60-£70.

RainboweBrite · 16/07/2011 23:21

Oh, forgot, 1 cat as well!

mercibucket · 16/07/2011 23:27

news.uk.msn.com/uk/alternative-census-lifts-lid-on-uk

average spend for a family of 4 is apparently £76 a week plus alcohol

btw your partners comments are a blatant invitation for him to do all the food shopping and cooking
