he gives me £100 a week to do the food shop. That normally is enough, sometimes just over, sometimes just under, feeds 5 of us for 6 days and kn a saturday dh buys a takeaway.
He thins that this amount is totally unreasonable, and i think its pretty good.

So how much do you spend!
How many of you are there?

Thanks Smile

Meant to add - I think cooking from scratch is cheaper than ready meals and pre-prepared stuff.

ComeWhineWithMe · 26/06/2011 15:22

160.00 a week and top up's during the week.
6 dc and 2 adults.

mankyscotslass · 26/06/2011 15:27

Yes to making most thing from scratch, works out loads cheaper.

Also that includes packed lunch stuff for all 3 of the children.

Lollyheart · 26/06/2011 15:31

2 adults and 3 children

£100 pw, was spending about £150 but since doing online with acado it's now cheaper as it's adds it up as I shop, and I can't see any crap that I dont need Smile.

Enraha · 26/06/2011 15:35

usually keep to £50-£60 a week for 2 adults and a 3yo and maybe 1 week a month spend £75 online to bulk stock up on the big things (cleaning products, loo rolls, stash of bottled water, tins etc). Cook mainly from scratch and get a weekly veg box for £15 in the normal budget. No alcohol, except x2 bottles of cooking wine.

mrsravelstein · 26/06/2011 15:37

£150-£200 per week for 2 adults and 3 kids, that includes 1 or 2 bottles of wine, quite a bit of meat for my carnivorous sons, and all toiletries/household stuff too

Naetha · 26/06/2011 15:37

Interesting thread - we spend around £65 per week on the big shop (asda or morrissons), then probably about £10 a week on top up shops / Home Bargains. We probably have one meal out or take away per week (probably averages out every week and a half or so) which costs £15. So about £90 per week for two adults, a 3 year old, an 18mo and 4 cats.

We base our shopping on what is on special offer, cook in bulk and freeze, have jacket potatoes as a fairly regular meal, and don't drink very much alcohol.

jobhuntersrus · 26/06/2011 15:41

2 adults 3 ds 1 dog. £75 per week sainsburys online. We do pop out and buy extras on top but it is normally treats and extras such as wine, crisps or we just fancy something different etc things we could perfectly well do without. I used to spend alot more but experimented with economy brands and own brand products and saved loads. I base my weekly meals around what is on offer as well as family favourites. Bulk buy and freeze where possible. I don't buy fancy lunch box stuff either like individual little drinks and snacks. Toiletries and cleaning stuff, we buy own brand or whatever is on offer. Washing powder has to be certain make because of ds3 skin but it comes on offer so regularly I just always get a huge box when it's cheaper.

For us it's shopping online which is the biggest thing which helps us to stick to our budget. Do you want to spend less?

manicmummyoftwo · 26/06/2011 15:42

£100 per week for 2 adults (debateable the way DH has been behaving todayWink) and 2 children. Outrageous isn't it? I always cook from scratch but can understand why some people have little choice but to shove some oven chips and fish fingers in night after night.

Obligatory Sat night take-away is extra Smile

A big monthly shop about £100, and then £40 a week for our weekly fruit and veg box and milk. etc + shop bought sandwiches for DH and I as a lunchtime treat in the week, when are working. We are two adults, one toddler, no wine but veg box costs ££s!

lucyspangle · 26/06/2011 15:47

150 for three of us 1 cat.
Includes cleaning stuff.
No booze though - we buy that seperately

jellybeans · 26/06/2011 15:51

We spend £120 on main shop and £30 in the week. There are 2 adults, 5 children.

Riveninside · 26/06/2011 15:54

About £100. No takeaways.
As you are a family come come the bills, mortgage etc isnt 'the families' and all money going into the same bank account?

beanlet · 26/06/2011 15:55

About 120 every fortnight for the big online waitrose shop and prob another 40-50 per week for fresh veg, etc. So ballpark 100 per week is about right. There are two adults and one gannet Grin in our household.

TidyDancer · 26/06/2011 15:58

I would say about £80 per week here. That's for two adults and a five-year-old DS. Baby DD is still breastfed. Nappies (etc) for her are on top of that. If you didn't include nappies or wine and the like, I'm fairly confident we could get it down to about £50. There would no extras or treats on that shop though.

I don't think you or DH are wrong here. It is an unreasonable amount, but that's what it costs to feed the family these days.

Gonzo33 · 26/06/2011 16:15

We spend at least E120 per week - which is GBP100 roughly. Two adults, 1 Preteen and 1 baby with nappy requirements. That does not include alcohol (which we rarely drink) and we shop in Lidl or Carrefour.

£130 a week for 3 of us. Plus the odd takeaway.

This really needs to be a joint decision, we're not in the 1950s you know.

Get him to do an online shop for a week and see how long the food lasts.

FrameyMcFrame · 26/06/2011 16:25

£120 per week for 4 of us.

But that's not including milk, wine and treats such as chocolate and popcorn etc.

DarciesmumandBump2 · 26/06/2011 16:31

I've just spent £138 in sainsburys and that's just for 3 of us + bump. however, I brought some of DDs school uniform plus a new skirt to wear when the sun decides to show. Brought some storage boxes for DDs toys. Nappies & wipes - starting to build up a little stock pile!

upahill · 26/06/2011 16:36

4 of us here.
dh does the food shopping and spends about £130/150 a week.
We eat out twice a week though. That is about £80+ each time.
However that costs include the school lunches that he makes.

mejon · 26/06/2011 16:38

2 adults, a 5 year old a 5 month old and 2 fussy cats here. I usually spend between £80 and £100 and this includes nappies, cleaning stuff, formula when required. I tend not to do a 'top up' shop as I'm out in the sticks and town is 30 minutes away so do all my shopping once a week. I'm amazed at how the price varies so much each week despite buying pretty much the same sort of thing/amount. This week it was £86. Last week I paid £106.

iEmbarassedMyself · 26/06/2011 16:38

£130 pw
That's 2 adults, 2 teenagers, 1 dog but not including dog food, though treats/meat for the dog.
It includes a bottle of wine.

shineoncrazydiam0nd · 26/06/2011 16:43

this is like asking how long a piece of string is though isnt it? It all depends on individual circumstances, whether you cook from scratch, etc etc..

I spend around £150 a week, all in. That is for me and two children. I fully admit I am fairly extravagant though.
