he gives me £100 a week to do the food shop. That normally is enough, sometimes just over, sometimes just under, feeds 5 of us for 6 days and kn a saturday dh buys a takeaway.
He thins that this amount is totally unreasonable, and i think its pretty good.

So how much do you spend!
How many of you are there?

Thanks Smile

We put £700 a month into shopping account, but don't spend it all. It varies if we have family to stay or birthday parties. I use that for all household stuff, like cleaning stuff, dog stuff, minor DIY stuff.

4dcs including teenager who eats more than me, two who eat like me, dh and me, and dog.

TorcherQueenie · 26/06/2011 16:51

£50 a week for 2 adults one 8 yr old and a JRT. Its a hobby of mine Grin

pigsinmud · 26/06/2011 16:56

I reckon I spend about £150 week for 2 adults and 4 dc and a dog. I think I spend quite a lot on food, but friends (2adults and 2 children) spend about £200 plus takeaways - not sure how they do that!

On average, between £130- £160. That includes cleaning stuff, enough to make things from scratch, packed lunches for 3 dd's.

I also buy extras like wine and sweets etc from the co-op, probs £25 per week

There are 2 adults and 5 children aged 12,9,6,4,1.

inthesticks · 26/06/2011 17:08

Two adults and two teenagers. I spend about £80 online shop plus average £30 on top ups. Doesn't include school meals. We have a takeaway about once a month.

TyDontWannaMissAthing · 26/06/2011 17:13

£65 for 2 adults and a 3year old, and a nearly 9 month old.
We have to get 2 packs of nappies, bedtime ones for ds and all the time ones for dd. She is formula fed so £8 goes on milk, after buying the milk, nappies and wet wipes, which we get the value one, we are left with £45 for the week.
If I was lucky enough to have £100 a week i would be made up and could actually feed the dc fresh meat a day.

Northernlurker · 26/06/2011 17:16

There are 5 of us and I spend around £200 a month on a big super market shop then another 50-60 a week on top ups and farm shop. I think you're doing fine. Tell dh not to be an arse.

SauvignonBlanche · 26/06/2011 17:20

Between £120 and £150 for 4 of us, depending on how much wine we buy.
Sounds like you need to re-think your financial arrangements into a more equitable system. Hmm

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 26/06/2011 17:22

On average £175 -£200 a week, but that includes all our wine and cleaning stuff etc. And I only shop at Waitrose.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 26/06/2011 17:23

PS

Don't like the idea of your DH "giving you" the housekeeping - very 1950s.

k75 · 26/06/2011 17:23

120pcado, 20 at farmers market and 30 at butchers. Doesnt include alcohol.

Doobydoo · 26/06/2011 17:24

SORRY but he 'GIVES' you £100 a week???????????????????????
I see you are a critical care nurse so why is he 'GIVING' you anything?
By the way I think you do extremely well to manage on that amount.

Tigerbomb · 26/06/2011 17:25

On average £130 - 140 a week That's for 4 of us and 2 cats

We don't buy takeaways, alcohol, tobacco or organic.

We do buy chocolate though

pointydog · 26/06/2011 17:26

You need to either rearrange your finances so that he pays all bills and dds and you buy shopping

or

he goes and buys the shopping.

I find it v strange that he gives you money to go and shop.

Doobydoo · 26/06/2011 17:27

Sounds massively controlling. So ghat if he earns more than you.You are supposed to be a team.

roguepixie · 26/06/2011 17:27

Between £120-140 on Ocado for a weekly shop (3 of us). May spend £30 more during the week if I need something but not always.

Add in another £200 per month at Costco, the odd £80 per month at the butcher and you've got quite a bill.

Can I ask whether your DH has been living in a news blackout zone during the last 12 months? Has he not listened to any news at all?? The rising cost of living has been fairly central in the news Hmm. I used to spend about £100 p/w but that has gone up significantly. I think you are doing well with what you are spending. The only problem with making your DH responsible for the shopping is, if he's anything like mine he will come back with half the shopping...thereby cutting the bill!!!! Grin

pointydog · 26/06/2011 17:27

I spend under £100 for 4.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 26/06/2011 17:30

Oh, my DH can get the food bill down to about a third of what I spend - but then he forgets the meat/fish (strangely though never the beer or wine....).

Bumpsadaisie · 26/06/2011 17:37

We spend £100 a week for two adults and toddler. That includes nappies/toiletries.

We don't buy expensive ready made stuff but we do splash out on nice meat and cheese. And we have a bottle of wine or two a week.

PatTheHammer · 26/06/2011 17:39

Approx £85 a week for 2 adults, 2 children and no pets. We don't buy alcohol (tend to get given it a lot!?) I cook from scratch every night and we have a takeaway once in a blue moon. We do manage to have meat or fish with most meals (maybe do one or two veggie a week) and am still buying nappies for DS.
Myself, DH and DD all take packed lunches out of that, DS gets fed at nursery.

Maybe £10 a week top ups for bread/milk/butter/salad etc.

My money goes much further at Tesco/Asda and Ocado than it does at Sainsburys and Co-op. We also use our vouchers etc whenever we can so sometimes the shop comes in at around £70. I buy lots of stuff on offer, buy lots of basics ingredients and my kids quite like cheap grains/pulses/lentils etc which helps keep the cost down. I grow my own herbs and a little veg (my neighbour often gives me spinach, radishes, beans etc from his garden too which is great). I find the price of fruit bloody extortionate at the moment and we are down to buying oranges/apples and bananas with maybe strawberries or grapes as a 'luxury'. The kids eat lots of dried fruit and get fresh fruit for snack everyday at nursery/school.

TimeWasting · 26/06/2011 17:40

That sounds reasonable for 5 of you. You could spend less if you needed to though.

PatTheHammer · 26/06/2011 17:42

Sorry should add that DS gets fed his lunch at nursery.........looks like I never feed himBlush. Untrue, at 2 yo he pretty much eats the most in this house!

rookiemater · 26/06/2011 17:42

£100 sounds about right - we spend £100 for the 3 of us but I don't particularly watch what I spend. If he is that concerned about the pennies then give up the takeaway, how much is that costing per week? It could easily be replaced by one of the takeaway meals from the supermarket at half the price.

TheMagnificentBathykolpian · 26/06/2011 17:47

£50 a week on the main shop atm. for 2 adults and 2 children.

plus ten or twenty during the week for misc bits.

We have done it for 25 a week, when things were really tight.

I think you can always spend less than you think you can, if you have to.
