When will my positive test be negative???

Hi, I miscarried nearly 3 weeks ago and stopped bleeding soon after. I took a test today and it's still positive. I would like to try and conceive again but was wondering how long it will take the hormone to leave my body. I would be so grateful to hear of your experiences.
Thought I'd just add that my miscarriage was a complete one, this was confirmed by scan.

It does sound like a long time. I think I'd wait another two weeks and if still getting a POS result, I'd go back to the GP.

I miscarried over 2 weeks ago and I'm still showing positive on a test. I went to see my GP today as I was told it should be showing negative by 2 weeks, but he told me it can be up to 6 weeks before all the hormones are gone. I want to try to conceive again too, so things seem to be dragging a bit, but I guess we just have to be patient and wait for our bodies to get back to normal.

Thank god I found this thread! Mis-carried a week and a half ago (1st pregnancy, had only known 12 hours) - and I've had four blood tests done which have gone like this for HCG

24 (day of miscarriage)
64 (two days later)
55 (three days after that)
75 (two days after that)
77 (two days after that)
and they STILL haven't cocking well scanned me!!!

littleyellowchicken · 12/05/2010 19:46

You've made my heart sink.
I had a miscarriage exactly 28 days ago and am feeling pregnant again now. But daren't do a test yet because I'm afraid it will be a false positive. I didn't do any tests after the mc because it seemed pretty clear that it had all disappeared and my symptoms went too (that was an mc at 7 weeks).
How long do you reckon I should leave it?

feelingreallypeeved · 13/05/2010 10:56

Here's an update. I did a test yesterday and although it was still positive it was definately alot fainter. When I was pregnant the line was really dark. I think the hormones are slowing ebbing away. I think by next week I'll have a BFN. littleyellowchicken although my test is positive my symptoms have gone. Leave it another week and see, there seem to be alot of women on here who fall pregnant very quickly after mc. Or have blood tests done to see if your HCG levels are falling or rising. Hairytriangle, you'd think it would be easier for them to scan you? My scan confirmed my miscarriage (I was 10 week.) I don't know if the HCG hormone continues rising for a while after mc or whether it's still there but immediately starts to drop.

katyliz should the test be negative 2 weeks after you think you've miscarried or 2 weeks after the bleeding has stopped?

Just an update, in case it's useful - my advice would be PUSH FOR A SCAN IF YOU ARE AT ALL WORRIED!!!! It's a realy rollercoaster when HCG keeps rising!

HCG levels last night 100 (up from 75 on Monday - WTF!) quickest and largest rise when they should really be decreasing

Scan today showed : 2 x healthy ovaries, 1x small fibroid at back wall of womb (knew about this already). ?small 'blip' in womb - could be retained product, right hand ovary has a small cyst which is normal after ovulation (apparently they can form and go away of their own accord).

Dr says there is nothing dangerous that they can see, no sign of ectopic pregnancy, that I need HCG monitored every forty eight hours, that it could be a very early viable pregnancy but until hcg levels get to 1,000 they can't see, but most likely not.

Ho hum, the only option is to keep monitoring me and sit and wait.

Feels strange to be a medical anomole!

Hope you're all keeping well x

Hello all,

I thought I would throw my experience in to confuse us all even more. I had a MMC in February - waited for nature to do its thing - it didn't so ended up having a medical management in mid march. My body is very stubborn and wouldnt give anything up at all, I just bled - so had retained products for age, the hospital refused to give my an ERPC. My HCG took about 7 weeks to get back to normal. I now have (8 weeks on) a BFN and HCG of 2, but I am still bleeding. My consultant says its not retained products but hormonal, my body is just not sorting the hormones out, so she wants to put me back on the pill for 3 months. I just want to get pregnanat again, but going back on the pill just seems like a step back.I used to be so in tune with my body, but now it is a mystery to me.....

I hope you are all well and your bodies are behaving better than mine!

feelingreallypeeved · 14/05/2010 15:05

batteryhen that must be so frustrating, how far gone were you? It seems that people experience a miscarriage so differently from someone else even if their at more or less the same stage of pregnancy. Keep us updated hairytriangle
The test I did today was a really BFN. I'm glad as it's been straightforward for me. But sad that it's definately over.

batteryhen · 14/05/2010 18:25

Hello,.

I was supposed to be 8 weeks but the pregnanacy ended around 6+3. It was a multiple pregnancy - definately twins, possibly triplets, so maybe that complicated things, I don't know. It is sad when you get a BFN, but now you can look forward to getting a BFP.

Hairytriangle - remember you know your body better than anyone - if you need a scan, then insist on one. Its your health after all xx

hairytriangle · 14/05/2010 22:51

Sorry feelingreallypeeved big hug to you.
And sorry batteryhen big hug to you too.

More blood taken today (results tomorrow), Tuesday's was 118 (not 100 as they said), have another blood test next Wed, review next Fri and another scan the following Tues.

At last they have a 'management plan' - they are still saying I'm a medical mystery!

Kinda hoping that today's results will either be a huge drop or a huge rise - If it's a huge drop I can at least get on with things! and hopefully ovulate and menstruate, and SWI!!!

batteryhen · 16/05/2010 09:46

Hello,

Wasjust wondering how hairytriangle got on with your bloods yesterday? It would seem that the threat of me going back on the pill has scared my body into stopping bleeding. So after 8 weeks, things look like they are getting back to normal of course my DP is off back to germany today so the actual chances of conceiving are very slim to say the least, but one step at a time !

hairytriangle · 16/05/2010 20:00

Hi, thanks for asking batteryhen - sorry been away for weekend in Brighton.

Glad to hear you've stopped bleeding and good luck!

My HCG was up to 155 on Friday - rising way, way too slowly for it to be a viable pregnancy.

So, I have another blood test this coming Tues, then a consultation Friday, then another scan the following Tuesday (a plan at last!) if scan shows all well and deffo no pregnancy, I'm going to ask for the tablet to get rid of the 'retained products' so that my body can go back to normal - I'm really sick of this.

x

batteryhen · 16/05/2010 21:55

It really is horrible - not knowing one way or the other .At least now you have a plan I suppose. Stick to your guns, and do what is right for you, no matter what. Hope everything goes ok xx

KatyLiz · 17/05/2010 11:28

Oh that must be horrible hairytriangle having it go on for so long.

batteryhen I'm glad your body is back to normal, it must be a relief.

It's also strange how its managed in different areas. My GP said not to do any more pregnancy tests and they don't do blood tests as it just gives unnecessary worry. He's of the opinion that retained products always will come away eventually, and its best to wait to get back to normal naturally. So I'm just waiting, and I'm not going to test again.

Good luck with the rest of your tests hairytriangle x

feelingreallypeeved · 17/05/2010 14:03

So sorry batteryhen I rea;lly feel for you. It's bad enough knowing that the pregnancy isn't progressing without having to wait for the retained products to come out. You'd think they'd just scan you and then go from there. Keep us posted!

hairytriangle · 17/05/2010 18:28

Feelingreallypeaved thank you and Katyliz and batteryhen

It is horrid but I know I will just wallow if I get too down about it.

Theyve scanned me once and found 'something' too small to identify - retained product they think. and a small cyst.

bloods Weds, consultation Fri and then re-scan the following Tues by which time hopefully they'll know wtf my body is doing!

SophiasMummy · 17/05/2010 22:53

batteryhen, your experience sounds awful. I've had five m/c now ( one dd 3, so counting my blessings) but I've never been told I needed to go back on the pill!

Hopefully you will never experience this again, but for the others reading this strand, my consultant (private) told me two weeks is plenty of time for the significant bleeding to stop and an ERPC is a good idea after that. (a previous consultant said one week) I had a massive haemorrhage (emergency surgery, transfusions etc) due to retained products last November, so I personally I would always go for a scan after a couple days to see if the mc is complete. If you go to the EPU at your local hospital, they have to scan you, none of this constant blood test nonsense, which as I understand it is only useful if your pregnancy is under 5.5 weeks and therefore not fully detectable on a scan.

Fingers crossed for everyone ttc

SophiasMummy · 17/05/2010 23:04

My hormones always went back to normalas soon as I got my next period. Each time it has taken me about 4-5 weeks from passing the pregnancy sac (sorry if TMI) except after the haemorrhage when my body couldn't spare the blood the following month!

So if you have retained products, your cycle might not kick off until they are gone, or if it does when you get your next period it could be agony as your body tries to expel the tissue all over again. Had this happen when a routine D&C left some tissue behind... nice, NOT!

hairytriangle · 18/05/2010 09:43

SophiasMummy - it seems so cruel. No AF until HCG gone, no expelling of retained product til AF or some other intervention and in the meantime, no ovulating God MUST be a man for women to have so many design faults! ;)

SophiasMummy · 18/05/2010 11:38

Hey hairytriangle - feel so bad for you, it must be so frustrating.

Given that you mc so early (assuming if you had only known for 12 hrs that you were v.early when you found out) my bet is that you get AF right when she is due or within the next week. And given my experience she'll probably be pretty full on so get out those night time heavy duty pads as a double back up! And then after that you'll be right as rain and ready to ttc, and this will all be a horrible memory...

hairytriangle · 18/05/2010 13:10

LOL SophiasMummy

have not wanted an AF so badly EVER in my life! They are generally pretty heavy with me, but I have stocked up on extra thick and super duper pads and tampons already - just hope it comes soon! I hope you are right about it coming soon.

Yes it was very early I was six days late for my AF and I could have ovulated late in my cycle (because I do sometimes).

x

SophiasMummy · 18/05/2010 14:51

You know hairy triangle the other thing that always happens for me is I feel quite emotional about the mc when AF arrives, as if it is a fresh reminder of what wasn't - just thought I'd share because the first time it happened it really took me by surprise when I was crying over AF I'd actually been looking forward to getting...
