Hi all, wonder if anybody is able to shed any light on what is happening here? Am I pregnant or am I getting over a loss from four weeks ago. Or did I lose one twin and am now continuing with the other? I will try to keep this brief!

came off pill end of sept

nov 30 started bleeding, thought it was my period but something wasn't quite right - TMI - it was very red and heavy. Bleeding stopped after about five days but on 7 Dec took a test, due to 'feeling' pregnant (I have one DS), which was positive.

8 Dec went to doctor took a test and it was negative. She said I have clearly miscarried but to take a test in a week and return if positive.

12 Dec still felt very odd took a test and it -was faintly positive

14 dec took a digital test which came back negative.

Been feeling odd last few days and sick all day Thursday so took a test Friday and it was positive (very strong line).

Anybody have any idea what could be happening? could I just still be getting over loss from four weeks ago? as surely the timings are too soon for me to be pregnant again no?

Will def be going to the doctors tomorrow but just a bit confused (actually have been since bleeding at start of dec!)

You need to ask them to do a blood test to check for HCG, you need two done 24 hours apart to tell whether the HCG levels are doubling, this means pregnancy is moving forward, depending the level they may want to scan you too.

It's hard to say really whats going on, could it be you are pregnant again maybe?

sunburntats · 10/01/2010 20:06

agree, HCG levels will tell you for sure.

Unfortunately i have had several + urine tests after a mc, and i believe that it can take many many weeks for hormones to settle or deplete after a loss.

JetSetWilly · 10/01/2010 20:13

thanks for replying julez, i really haven't a clue what's happening.

yes i guess I could be pregnant but I just thought it would be a bit too soon? Last day of bleeding was 5 Dec but last positive was 12 Dec so just under four weeks since last positive to this positive. I guess I just thought it would take longer for the body to get over a miscarriage??

I will mention blood test to doc (if she doesn't mention it). I guess the only thing I can really do is wait... difficult though isn't it when you're trying to get on with life, it's on my mind ALOT!

Hi Sunburntats, sorry to hear about your mc.

I guess in a strange way that is what I wanted to hear, that it may be my hormones settling down (although of course i'd rather be preg!) as I think that would make more sense.

I guess the thing that puzzles me there is that the line was much much stronger this test that it did on the last two.

May i ask, did you continue to have any preg symptoms after your mc (goodness I truly hope this is not too personal, please ignore if it is) as this is what led me to retest... having said that I don't feel pregnant today!!

A positive test is a confirmation of pregnancy. Congratulations!

You can have a false negative, but not a false positive, unless you have recently miscarried and the HCG hormone is still in your system. The negative tests you had would have shown that you had cleared the HCG from your original pregnancy, unless your technique was bad.

Is there a possibility that you are newly pregnant (ie BD in the last 2 - 3 weeks)?

AF follows ovulation, so you could have ovulated after a mc, and conceived before the opportunity of having a period.

JetSetWilly · 10/01/2010 20:55

thank you Lunatic! I hope it's good news too

I also have pcos so I don't know if this confuses matters at all (are you more likely to have false test readings because of this as your hormones are a bit up and down???)

having said that DS was conceived in one sitting ha ha so I'm not that infertile coupled with being more fertile after mc could be good news??? hope so

Few years ago I had a mc on Dec 5th, 3rd Jan I got a Psitive preg test whiche was def a new preg!

Go see your GP and demand a blood test

JennyJW · 10/01/2010 21:45

I did about 3 pregnancy tests( the ones that shows lines) some weeks after mc and they all were positive. 2 faint and one a bit stronger. I had to have a scan to make sure I didn't have any retained tissue. They also did a pregnancy test at hospital which was negative. So then I went straight to shop and bought a digital test which came back negative. Maybe the normal ones aren't always to trust. Especially not after a mc.

yes I have seen that wicked, you know about the false positives etc and yes there def is possibility that i'm newly preg but I guess in my head I'm just a bit nervous to truly believe that I could be preg (and I thought it was far too quick anyway; mc finished 5 dec, new positive 8 jan). But this was the advice I was hoping for - thinking about it I did have a neg test after the positives which I guess would show that the hcg had been cleared (this is exactly why I bought a digital test on the 14th to stop all the umming and ahhing about whether the line was clear or not).

but julez I can't believe our dates are just about the same... in fact yours are even shorter than mine? so anything is poss i guess!

am going docs tom and will def speak about blood test (last time she suggested scan but if it's looking as though this is a new preg then I think it would be far too early for a scan)

thanks for all replies

hhhhmmmm yep very good point there Jenny. that did cross my mind, even to buy a conception indicator test, the only thing stopping me is the cost!

hi jetset, have you been to the docs? what did they suggest you do?

I suddenly and abruptly always stop feeling pregnant when i miscarry.
Thats with bleeding or even some of the times without bleeding but it is my first indicator that some thing is wrong.

Had hcg levels checked for the first few mcs, then for the last 2 i havent bothered as they jsut tell me what i already know, its over again.

I have heard that people are very fertile after mc, that has not been my experience unfortunately.

mistlethrush · 12/01/2010 15:50

My Hcg levels have taken up to 3.5mo to get back to normal after mc in the past (sorry), and I have had +ve tests during that time too...

JetSetWilly · 12/01/2010 20:43

hi guys, thanks for checking in sunburntats

well I went to the docs yday. unfortunately it was a different doc so had to explain what happened to her a few times! I took another test in the morning and she carried out a test while I was there, both were positive. So that's three positives now great.

However today I have started to pass blood... brown blood though so not great news although not red blood, and only a little. Called dr (doc I saw first time) and she is arranging for an appointment at the EPU for me, should be within the next couple of days. Not sure if it's a bit too soon for a scan but we'll see.

As for whether I feel pregnant it's hard to say really. I don't feel too sick at the moment, but then I do always feel worse in the mornings anyway. Boobs are still full but then I guess they would be, I doubt that they would stop feeling full straight away??

Mentally however I do feel a little better for some reason, don't know why. I think it's consumed my mind a little lately and I'm a bit sick of my umming and ahhing when actually something like this is totally out of my control.

thanks for your post mistlethrush no need to apologise for being honest I'd really rather you was . Hopefully things will become a little clearer once I have an appt at the hopsital. Will keep you posted.

well the bleeding has stopped but I don't feel pregnant today at all so I'm guessing it's all over now (if I was pregnant??).

Hospital called this morning and I have a scan tomorrow lunchtime. Will keep you posted.

Oh good luck, you never know until the proper scan. You can feel up and down at the start. Boobs is a good sign, mine shrank quickly when I mc'd. Fingers crossed for you and sending good vibes.

JetSetWilly · 14/01/2010 16:17

Hi Mistlethrush, hi everybody

well would you believe there is a little heartbeat there... 6+3 the nurse has dated me (the blob). I'm really not getting very excited just yet as it's very early days and what with all those funny scares recently. I have another appointment in 10 days, I think I will feel a bit better if all is OK then.

So just wanted to thank everybody for their kind words and for sharing their very personal experiences with me.... I haven't told anybody so it's been very difficult to work out in my mind what was going and you have all really helped. thank you

Will let you know how the next appointment goes [crosses everything]
