Bleeding question, sorry

I’m having a medically managed miscarriage (nearly 10 weeks but baby died at 8+3) and am getting slightly concerned about whether the blood loss is normal. The doctor said like a very heavy period which this definitely isn’t!! Is there such a thing as “normal” and if so, what is it?! Thankfully the cramps haven’t been as bad as I expected, but I’d like to know if I can expect to leave the bathroom any time soon... It’s been gushing on and off for about half an hour and otherwise it’s like someone left the tap running.

I am having one just now- though not medically managed. Was also 10 weeks, but baby died some time ago. Yesterday I had a couple of hours of being unable to leave the bathroom- I would get a cramp that would build and then push out a huge clot (several the size of my hand). Nothing like a period at all, much more painful and sooooo much blood.

The nurse said it shouldn't really keep pouring out and if it does it can be a sign you need to go back in. However she said a big bleed can sometimes be a clot which is stuck and if you push it out then often then bleeding stops.

I've had 6 miscarriages, the most recent one at 10 weeks. Medical management. The gushing you describe concerns me. I bled very heavily, possibly spent around an hour in the bathroom, when it was at it's worst, but wouldn't say gushing. Continued to bleed heavily after that but manageable out with night time pads.

Pain was incredible as well. I'm angry on your behalf at doctor saying like a heavy period.

If you have a number please do call. Everyone is different and you are much better to run it by someone at the hospital.

Yes, cookie describes it much better. Cramps then sort of pushing. So sorry for you as well cookie. It's just so shit.

Go to the hospital zoo they should have an early pregnancy suite you can go straight to rather than via a&e.

I had this. Sat there 3 hours and I hadn't even miscarried. I don't think it's normal and you should get seen. Particularly if your cramps aren't that bad.

I’m going to see if it continues for a bit but my bf is hovering nervously outside the bathroom so he’ll force me to ring the hospital soon I think anyway. Feels like I’m pushing out clots every few minutes.

I’m armed with a bottle of water and my laptop but I’m getting a bit bored of sitting here!

Get a sugary drink if you can, I remember getting very light headed. Did loose a lot of blood though.

The official guidelines are if your soaking through a maternity pad every half an hour (I think) then they like to see you.

I had the medication too.

Also, if you feel like you can. Try and have a look at the clots. If they are pinky coloured they are flesh if they are red / dark red / black they are blood.

Hi @fourpawswhite. Thank you for checking up on me. The heavy bleeding stopped shortly after everyone’s words of wisdom. It seems to have turned into what I would consider a period which I guess is good. Not sure what today will bring but I’ll see! Not much pain either so far which is a little unexpected.

Thanks for asking- yesterday I had a random very painful hour or two- worse than the day before then I finally passed one more big clot and it all went away. Bleeding more like a period now. Feel surprisingly tired, but otherwise fine. Just trying to spoil myself a little and get back on track.

I hope today goes well for you. I have another blood test on Friday as my hormones weren't really dropping, but I hope after all the blood etc it will have now. Are they testing yours too?

They haven’t said anything about a blood test. They’re due to call me tomorrow and then I think I’ve got to go in for a scan in about 2 weeks to check everything is out.

The tiredness is really crazy and I keep getting dizzy spells, although I guess that’s probably to be expected with the blood loss.

Ah- I don't have another scan planned- they are checking my hcg levels and they should drop to zero if nothing retained. Before the big bleed they weren't dropping fast enough and they thought it might be a partial molar pregnancy so they were going to take a sample, but hopefully if my hcg has dropped they won't need to do that.

Hope you feel less dizzy this evening. DH has declared me pale and is bringing me A lamb curry for dinner. I'm not going to argue!

The dizzy spells are passing thankfully but I suppose it’ll be a little while until we’re both back to normal.

Hello, I was just meaning to message you yesterday. Fine thanks- seems like ages ago now and I have stopped forgetting I am not pregnant if you know what I mean.

Still no period.

How are you doing? Did you have your follow up scan? Hope your body is kicking back into normal. I'm worried mine may take a while as I am still breastfeeding and it took ages to come back (only had one period and DD2 just turned 2!).

I know exactly what you mean, although I keep thinking I’m 13 weeks then having to remind myself that’s not true anymore.

I’m okay although the scan revealed an incomplete miscarriage, so I’m having surgical management tomorrow. It sucks. Can’t wait to get back to normal but it’s so hard with not knowing when your period will be.

Hopefully your period will come back soon.

Best of luck Zoe, this happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Mine didn't complete naturally either but I took Cytotec tablets for three days and I passed the rest of the tissue naturally. All over now I think thankfully. Best of luck for future pregnancies

I'm so sorry for your loss :( I had an mmc at 12 weeks and also had medical management. I was told to expect to have a full pad to change every 15-20mins. I also had an incomplete one so had to have a d&c, honestly you'll feel so much better afterwards. Xx

@Kej13 Thanks! It might sound strange but I can't wait. I'm scared, but can't wait as this has been dragging on for so long! Sorry to hear about your loss and that you had to go through an incomplete miscarriage. How are you coping now? Xx

I was scared too but honestly i can't explain how much better I felt after! I had an emergency one, had the miscarriage and medication on the Thursday and by Sunday I couldn't even turn in bed I was in so much pain so DH took me to the women's ward who were amazing and had the d&c the next day but that did mean an over night stay for me unfortunately! Physically I'm fine now, we've been ttc since with no joy which has been the harder part of this for me but we'll get there! I hope you're okay, it's a sad and lonely time xxx

I think it's the uncertainty that's the worst. Not knowing how long it'll take to get pregnant again, not knowing if you'll be able to hold onto it... It is sad and lonely but I'm slowly hearing about more and more family members who've been through this and come out (successfully) on the other side. It gives me hope. But I think you're right - we will get there! Xx
