Really heavy period after miscarriage... Advice please?
littletike · 18/11/2016 18:51
I had a miscarriage 3-4 weeks ago and I think I'm having my first period since though it's difficult to tell because bleeding has been on and off in between.
Today I've filled a moon cup at least 3 times and the last time was in about an hour and a half and it over flowed.
So at what point do I get concerned about how heavy the bleeding is?
somethingfromnothing · 19/11/2016 14:39
I'm 5 days into my what I think is my first post mc period and it's awful. The bleeding is so heavy. I've had 2 other pregnancy loses and my period has never been like this before. Did your bleeding stop or is it still heavy?
Mrsharper2016 · 24/11/2016 00:18
Dr said it will be very heavy for the first period and quite painfully. She said it is because the uterus is trying to heal and get rid of the 'left-overs'. But I thought uterus is doing so every month isn't it? but she is quite right about the pain and heavy flow. My second AF is not as painful but definitely heavy as well.
KittyandTeal · 24/11/2016 18:28
My period afte both my losses (22 and 14 weeks) were horrifically heavy and painful. They were ok again after that
TurquoiseDress · 25/11/2016 01:49
I had a missed miscarriage over the summer- my first period afterwards was incredibly heavy- soaking through tampons etc which has never happened before!
It all added to the misery of having a MMC, losing a much wanted baby.
The second one was pretty heavy too but since then have gone back to normal for me, which is light/medium.
As I've been on the pill for over a decade, only having breaks when I was pregnant, I was worried that my 'normal' periods were very heavy ones. luckily not the case.
HairyScaryMonster · 11/12/2016 21:28
My first period after mc really took me by surprise. Excluding the clots in the mc, I think it was actually heavier. It was v traumatic. If your filling more than a cup of blood per hour it's worth ringing 111 or if you're getting dizzy etc.
Lizziedoll · 13/12/2016 19:26
I also had a heavier than normal period after my early miscarriage in July but it is to be expected apparently. If you are worried, go see the doctor? But I think as long as there is no sign of infection (foul smell) or haemorrhage (changing pads more than once an hour) then it's all fine

I just wanted to leave a trace of what Im currently experiencing regarding my first period after miscarriage in case other women are going through the same thing.
I am on day 7 of intense bleeding. The first 5 days I passed large clots every 3 hrs. At least a table spoon worth, as well as filling a pad every 1 1/2 hrs. I spent the day in hospital 2 days ago getting everything checked out because I was getting light headed. But everything checked out. I am in a certain state of distress about it, because I'm easily bleeding as much as the miscarriage, maybe more. But apparently this happens. Bonne courage mamans

This message has just popped up on my watched threads.
Made me tearful reading my reply I wrote in November 2016, describing my first period post-MMC.
I wanted to post to give those who have recently miscarried a bit of hope- I recently gave birth to DC2, 2 weeks old now and pregnancy all straight forward.
Realise that I got my BFP almost 1 year to the day after I wrote that message (it took us over a year TTC post miscarriage).
Wishing you all courage and lots of luck

Just want to say thank you TurquioseDress for giving me some hope!
Currently experiencing my first period after my second missed miscarriage and it’s nothing like the period after my first miscarriage to the point where I went to A&E because I thought something must have been severely wrong with me.
I hope one day I can read back on this comment, like you have, and have my much longed for baby in my arms.
Thank you again, so so much for sharing! Xx

I had a miscarriage about 5 weeks ago ,after last scan I have no tissue but 6 days later my first period came . I'm on 7th day bleeding with lots of clots , it's a very heavy period which I've never seen before . I went to the hospital 2 days ago and they said it's normal up to 10 days then I should go again back for a new scan . They also gave me some tables to make the bleeding lightly .It worked but I think it's too much .
Should I worry for my health ? I would like a new pregnant and I'm worried there is something wrong in my womb
Maisie92 · 20/11/2018 16:45
Hello, my bleeding carried on for another 2 weeks after my last message so please try not to worry (however I very much know how anxious it makes you feel!) - just have hope that Mother Nature has it all worked out 😊 I did make an appointment with my doctor afterwards and found complete reassurance that our bodies are wonderful things! Xx

Hello I know this is an old thread and not sure if anyone will see this but I'm confused by the first period after a missed miscarriage. I had a missed miscarriage 5 weeks ago (baby 6weeks). I started spotting last Saturday and have been for a week. Nothing much just mostly when I wipe with a little on a pad. I took a test couple days ago which was negative. Has anyone had this same experience or has everyone had heavy flows? (before pregnancy I was irregular with two/three days heavy and two light. Thanks in advance
Herheart · 26/10/2019 21:27
Hello WelshAnna, yes I had incomplete miscarriage at 3 months, that was 7-8 weeks ago, I am just starting my second period and like the first one ( after it happened) it’s extremely heavy, sore, and dark. Clotty, cold and like a turned on tap, slim but consistent flow. I’m going through 1-2 pads an hour, they are super long nighttime ones and I used to have a lot lighter periods ( before the pregnancy).
But before I got pregnant I’d had endometriosis for years, and the was ridiculously painful /heavy. Although I healed that myself naturally and got my periods down to 4-5 days of happy red flows (from 21 days. Of hell). They were a lot better for a few years, then since the miscarriage 7-8 weeks ago, they’ve (periods)got heavy and painful again.
I’m eating a lot of beetroot for vitamin c& d, taking, folic acid Pukka Mother Kind, spa tone, eating tons of Mother Earth foods, fruits, and restarted back gentle yoga, breathing, walking ( where I can). Wearily looseclothing, using hot water bottle. Having Accupunture too.
This has all helped hugely. I have read that many woman’s bleeding from period, gets more ‘normal’ again by their third period after the miscarriage.
This one is pretty sore, but not as bad as the first one that came after the m/c. That was bloody awful. And energetically heart breaking, like reliving everything from the releasing the little baby again.its so upsetting for us all. I’m so sorry for you - as it’s flippin horrendous.
I do Hope this helps in some way, keep going and I wish your heart, womb and head much strength, repair and love. X

Hi WelshAnna, I know it's been sometime since you posted but just wanting to share a similar experience. I had a MMC mid October (at 10 weeks) and got my first period 4 days ago. In the week leading up to it I had alternating pale pink and brown only when I wiped but once it finally started this period has been the heaviest I've known - thankfully not so painful but bleeding way more than usual with clots. Was relieved once it came though - felt like a reset button had been pushed and all the being in limbo is coming to an end.
Warm wishes, courage and best of luck to all xxx

Rory19 · 24/05/2020 09:54
Hi! I know this is an old post but I had a MMC 7 weeks ago. I naturally passed 3 days later. 3 weeks after I thought I had my period only lasted 5 days not very heavy? But my periods before weren’t heavy.
I then had no bleeding for a week and a half and then I started bleeding again, this bleeding has been going on for 10 days now? I have bad pains left and right sided. The bleeding varies it’s either very light or heavy! Has anyone experienced this before? I was very very regular before my MMC so just worrying something is wrong :( I rang the drs they thought infection so I’ve been on antibiotics for 1 weeks but if anything pain is worse and bleeding hasn’t gotten any better?
Anyone else experienced this?
Thank you x

Hi, I had a mmc around 2 months ago, today I started passin large clots (satsuma+ size) and Beeding extremely heavily, I rang 111 and on doctors advice been put on some medication and taken a pregnancy test, I've never had anything like this bleeding before and much like you this is the 9/10 day of bleeding with it getting much worse today. I went back onto the mini pill as didn't want to conceive with not knowing what was going on with the pandemic. I'm now questioning whether I should stop the pill if it's that even though never had these side effects before, go onto something else or just stop hormonal contraception all together. I'm so confused tired and upset, still mourning my loss tbh, should have been about 22 weeks now. Its just been an emotional roller-coaster, I've bled so much - 6weeks after mmc, then 2 weeks later another week, then a fortnight after that started this period. I feel fobbed off and ground down

Sazlvzstef · 04/08/2020 07:49
Hi all I had a silent miscarriage over 3 weeks ago and I'm now bleeding again is this normal and also feel heartbroken as me and my partner really thought we might have fell pregnant straight away as o have read that it's common what an emotional rollercoaster
Skyyreni · 06/08/2020 23:28
I had miscarriage July 2nd and here August 4th I’m just now getting my cycle. I’m heartbroken also as we tried straight after miscarriage. I was just having morning sickness and now I am bleeding. I’m giving up hope and I’m tired of praying. This feels like a punishment
Henryreynn · 29/09/2020 15:00
I’m writing this because I don’t think there is enough information about the after effects of miscarriage. I had a miscarriage 10 weeks ago. I was 9 weeks pregnant. I suffered heavy bleeding and pain at the time. I had a scan and everything had passed naturally and although I was heartbroken I was looking forward to my body healing. I had a period about 4 weeks after. I was expecting it to be heavy and painful (as I’d been warned) but it was normal for me. A month later I had another normal period and my partner and I decided that it would be a good time to try again for a much wanted baby. I was feeling optimistic about the future. However, a week/10days after my period I began spotting which I tried not to dwell on. A few days later I had very heavy bleeding and large clots. It came as a total shock. I wasn’t pregnant, I did do a test to be sure but it was negative. The bleeding was similar to the miscarriage. I spoke to someone at the hospital who said it was likely I was having a surge in hormones and this was my very heavy period. It seems my body still hasn’t recovered yet. I was tested for infection and this was all clear. It’s been a devastating week and the clots and pain have taken me back to when I had a miscarriage. It seems like it’s going to be a long process for me to get back to ‘normal’ I’ve always had regular periods and not too heavy.
Sethie89 · 26/10/2020 19:55
I know this is an old thread, but this is happening to me too. I had a MMC at 12 weeks had MVA and bled for around 10 days. Had what I thought was my period exactly 4 weeks later and now a week later I’m spotting again, it’s such a confusing tans frustrating time. Like you all I just want my body to get back to normal.
TayBob03 · 25/02/2021 06:04
Hi, thought I'd add to the thread!
I've had 2 mc, first was July 2020 I was 8 weeks I had a DC and my periods were absolutely fine afterwards all went back to normal straight away. I suffered another miscarriage Dec 2020 I was 12 weeks, I had my first period which at first I thought was maybe implantation bleeding as it was only when I wiped for a week then I had horrendous bleeding for another 1.5 with big clots. We tried again hoping to fall but I came on again after 3 weeks of last bleed and it's sooo heavy and painful not so many clots but tampon is over flowing and I have severe stabbing in my uterus. I'm absolutely gutted as I've always been regular and get caught easily 😕but now it seems my body doesn't know what's going on anymore.
