Periods after miscarriage

I had a miscarriage beginning of July at 5 weeks. I have recently had a period about the time I would have expected one, however, after 5 days of nothing, I have started a small bleed again. Is this usual after a miscarriage?

Sorry bluestar, I can't offer advice on this one but wanted to get it back to the top so that anyone who can help has more chance of spotting it.

Hello Bluestar!! Gosh this is a coincidence!! Since my first m/c I had a period for 3 months and 3-5 days after would have a small bleed. It annoyed me very much and I thought should I be trying again with my periods not being normal. I did and got pg as you know and m/carried again. I'll never know if it was as a result of this bleeding though.
In my case I had a bruised sort of area at the top where the first had implanted. It always has been a little tender and would cramp after a period and then I'd get this bleeding. I have asked several Doc' GP and hospital and they have offered no explaination. I myself am now waiting for my first period to see if this bleeding is still there after my period. I do not have the twinging as before but I am even now getting a small amount of blood after the m/c so fon't know if it has resolved itself. Doctors just don't seem to know why and one of them said it's to do with the lining and after m/c can take a while to renew itself etcc.. but noone really gave a technical opinion. My good friend also suffered a m/c and she has the same bleeding problems after period. I am reluctant to try ahain until this is rectified. The sonographer commented that the embryo from this recent m/c had settled down low as to avoid the top - I think there was still a little tiny bit left from the first m/c as the second started with old bits from the first. I really would give it the 3 cycles and if you still have the bleeding go to your gp and they might refer you for a scan just to check your lining. I beleive some people can have scarring ( which I think I had from the ERPC) or even fybroids ( which are easily removed) and can cause this bleeding. Hope I haven't ranted too much, but I know how it feels and wanted u to know you;re not alone with these symtoms! Hope u can reply!! LOL Qxxxx

I think anything goes after a m/c. I lost a baby in June and required a d&c. 4 weeks later I had a very light period and 4 weeks after that I've had a very very heavy one. My periods usually last 3 or 4 days so this one going on for nearly a week is really unusual. I was told to expect a longer and heavier one after the d&c however. Maybe you could talk to your doctor?
Hope you sort it all out soon
Hana

bluestar · 21/08/2003 10:22

Thanks for your responses especially quackers. The light bleeding I experienced was very strange. Sometimes it would be there and then for a few hours there was nothing. It never became heavy or painful, just very light. It has now stopped. I had no medical intervention following the miscarriage and felt really well once the initial bleeding had stopped. I guess time will tell but if I don't get pregnant and the same thing happens following another period, I will see the GP. Thanks again.

Yes do, mine would stop and start - still does, but I've still got 1cm of lining to come out apparanlty with next period, so not worrying yet. Yes I would never need more than a liner as it is so light and brown. I do beleive it's just hormones and aftermath of m.c, and I got pg while this was happening. Doc says it wasn't the lining, it was the embryo, so I don't want to worry too much about it just yet. Hope all goes well for you and maybe in a couple of onths or so we could be strating a new pg thread!!

quackers · 27/08/2003 10:27

What was everyone's first period like after m/c. I mean after a complete m/c actually, My first m/c was incomplete and bled for 3 months but this last was was over very quick. Just got my period yesterday - was very very heavy and today has stopped. I have short periods anyway and lost porbably the same amount of blood in a day as in 3 days! What is everyone elses experince?

hewlettsdaughter · 27/08/2003 21:04

Hi all, not sure I can add much to this thread really but I don't remember my periods after my early m/cs being particularly abnormal. I did have to wait longer than usual for one of them. I think though, as hana says, anything goes.

bluestar · 27/08/2003 22:32

My first period came when I would have expected it (if I had not fallen pregnant) which I was quite surprised about. Was not any heavier than usual, lasted 5 days, and then as I mentioned, had a small, light bleed 5 days after period had stopped. Nothing since. Now am 'probably' at that time of the month when I could try again and am!!

hi, it came 4 wks after m/c started, and was just as normal. my periods are quite heavy anyway. is everyone else all set to try again? i really have very mixed feelings...

quackers · 28/08/2003 08:39

Thanks guys, just like me then, as my period has continued, not as heavy but just as they were before m/c, so I'm really pleased. Bluestar, I don't have those twinges any more and I had those since March - Yeh! That should mean I won't get that extra bleed 4 days after my P.
BossyK, Hi, it's good to hear from you all. Yes I just don't want another disappointment. I feel if I have 3 months, then I have done the very best I can to conceive a healthy baby. I feel so different to after the last m/c, I shouldn't have tried when things were so abnormal, but you know what it's like when you really want a baby. Good luck all, we'll be back in the moving on after m/c thread soon. HD, good luck, wishing u all the best with your pg!

I had a failed miscarriage in June, with the D&C on 30 June. Since then, I've had a period starting on 17 July (I think - I forgot to note when it was - it might have been 24 July), then a light one again starting on 15 August, but which went for about 7 days, and ANOTHER one starting on Friday, 28 August - ie only two weeks after the previous one.

My cycle was normally short (24-26 days), but this is getting ridiculous. Is this normal following a miscarriage?

I'm back on the mini pill (Micronor) until dh and I have our belated discussion about if/when we try for another one.

quackers · 01/09/2003 16:46

Janz, hi, oh it's such a pain isn't it. I'm having this irregular bleeding too and did with my last m/c, that was a lot worse but I did come out of it the other side just took about 3/4 cycles. They were all over the place, my good friend has the same problem and is only just getting ok after 6 months. Maybe see your GP. Mine has just sent me for some hormone checks but doubts she'll get anything, more for my benfit and putting my mind at rest thta things will sort out. It really is frustrating when all you want to do is have a baby and get on with life. Doesn't seem too much to ask really, so why do we suffer so much? I have just had my first period after 2nd m/c and it stopped and has now started again with big pains, no idea why. I just know that the sonographer saw a 1cm linin still to come out after m/c. I can only presume that it takes a while to re establish itself. Don't think I've been any help at all as it's such a grey area and everyone has different experiences. Let us know how you;re getting on LOLxxxx

bluestar · 16/09/2003 12:19

After having the one normal period after mc, nothing since and I don't feel periody at all. Thought I'd check my temp over the weekend and had an obvious rise on Monday. Could this mean that I have ovulated very late or does your temp rise before the start of your period also? My cycle was haywire a few months prior to conceiving last time so wondering whether I have gone this way again.

OP posts:
quackers · 16/09/2003 12:34

Bluestar, I have exactlt the same problem, just posted on the ttc thread. Was sure I felt ov day 12 and my temps are all over the place got a rise today - day22!!! But have felt pg symptoms for a few days now so no idea what is going on!! I know it took along time after my first mc to recover - about 3 or 4 months to gete a regualr period, so i suppose it's just waiting for it all to become regular again!! I know 2 friends who have had mc's and they took a long time too get regular again. I suppose your body has to reset itslef and it takes a while.
What day are you on???
I heard that you can get a second temp rise if you are pg. So that's poss?? But the temp remains conctant until your period and then drops ( unless pg)!

bluestar · 16/09/2003 14:52

Well I did a test on day 34 (usual cycle) and it was negative. And I don't have pg symptoms but did try to aim for what I thought was fertile time. Since then no period and then I felt like I was experiencing ovulation again (around day 38/39) and the temp rose on day 40. I have felt sick for a few days with bad headache but I can get this around ov time too. Only on 1 day post (potential) ov so have a while to go yet. When will you know if you are pg?

OP posts:
quackers · 16/09/2003 15:42

Gosh, you're cycles are long and mine are short - 2 extremes! Well, it;s too early yet, I'm only 7/8 DPO so will have to wait until 10 days really, so by the weekend, I'll know. Just weird getting temp rise so late for me and in your case too! We read so much into these things!!! I was never like this before!!

bluestar · 17/09/2003 21:36

I think I'd rather have short cycles. I'm still not sure if I am really late or if I've entered the wait time. Hope you have some good news in the next week or so then. I'll have to wait a bit longer, but I will have timed it right on ov or just after so the chances are slimmer I guess. Fingers crossed for us both x

Thanks Bluestar, seen Doc today and it was ovulation, it was major though!! DH wanted some action that night too but I thought I might be pg. Wish I'd have done it now!! This cycle is going to be long, but it was after my last m/c, so I know they'll go shorter again. Good luck though for you!!!

bluestar · 18/09/2003 21:31

Although we did bd the day of my temp rise, most 'experts' seem to think this is already too late so I guess I'll just be having a really long cycle this month, wish it would hurry up and be over though. Like you, I thought I'd ov'd earlier so did it round that time and not this later time. Oh well! Keeping fingers crossed just in case.

Yes it;s too late I beleive!! Have to get my persona out again!!! Start trying properly this month!

Hello Ladies,

how do you count when the next period should be due? I had a ERPC on 13 May. I bled for about 2 weeks afterwards. Do I expect my period now as it is 14 June or in two weeks time as that's the time when my bleeding stopped from the ERPC?

Please help, getting quite anxious that the period is not here yet.

nevska

DelGirl · 19/06/2004 16:22

hello nevska - sorry to hear about your mc. I had an erpc last year and was at least 2 weeks late. I also bled for 2 weeks afterwards. I counted about 6 weeks from the date of the erpc. I mc'd again about 7 weeks ago but didn't have a procedure but again was 2 weeks late. hth take care.

strawberry · 19/06/2004 20:07

Sorry to hear about your mc. I also had D&C 2 weeks ago and they said to my next period could be anything from 3-10 weeks! So I guess it's still early days yet. When do you think you'll start TTC again? I think we will once I've had a period as this seems to be the advice. Good luck

nevska · 20/06/2004 03:51

DelGirl and Strawberry, thanks for sharing your experience with me. we'll start ttc after the first period, this is why i am getting anxious. I want to be in the know but when things like these happen there is never a definite answer.

Good luck to you too!
will keep you posted.
