Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

No wonder some people pong if they aren’t cleaning properly between their legs.

It's not about hygiene. That much is evident from post after post. Or did you just want to be insulting for the sake of it.

Itsybitsytitsy · 07/09/2025 16:29

@Mercurysinretrograde try cranberry capsules, some wonderful poster recommended it for the fishy smell after eating fish, it really works. I take the capsules on the day that I eat fish 😊. I buy mine from Morrison's.

Bloody hell that soap is dear!

It's around £2.50 from Temu.

I bet sales of persimmon soap have rocketed on the back of this thread.

I haven't bought any no sir not me

I've just ordered two bars.

Thank goodness it's not just me with one pit that reeks of onions.

SweetcornFritter · 07/09/2025 17:24

I’d be wary of buying any cheap soaps from Temu, Amazon or Ebay, especially unbranded. Are they really what they say they are? Highly doubtful imo.

Daftypants · 07/09/2025 17:50

I think I know what you mean .
My auntie’s bathroom smelled a bit odd with a smell I could not place .
She was fastidious about cleaning , it wasn’t a completely unpleasant smell and it wasn’t the smell of cleaning products ?
My parents bathroom didn’t smell like that , I don’t think I smell like that ?
if I eat asparagus then my wee smells of course , I also drink a lot of water and never drink alcohol

YourLemonTiger · 07/09/2025 18:05

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 06/09/2025 21:00

So glad we’re talking about it!
It’s true, and generally you’re accused of ageism and misogyny if you mention it!

It reminds me of the asparagus wee smell! It’s just, kind of wrong/stale.

Tbf it does sound ageist and misogynistic.

I've worked on elderly care wards, care homes and hospital wards in general and the only time someone or someone's body fluids smell funny is when they have a condition - male or female. Or if they just don't wash very much.

For some reason this same subject comes up every few months on MN and it's always about menopausal women.

PersephoneParlormaid · 07/09/2025 18:09

I think it’s good that we can talk about it.

RigIt · 07/09/2025 18:10

My wee started smelling weird. GP said it can be a symptom of vaginal atrophy and he was right as HRT along with topical vaginal oestrogen has fixed it.

I’m really sorry, but this is a genuine post. There really WAS a distinctive smell following my Mum - and now me. There is no one I can ask IRL

As I identified in my original post - I shower daily and wash at other end of the day

Not that I should have to justify myself to anyone. Sorry for being a smelly menopausal woman.

Jeez there is always someone that is offended 🙄🙄 I thought this was a safe space ffs

Sorry for being a smelly menopausal woman.
😂

I think op was just asking about something she has experienced. Plenty of others seem to have as well, so not sure how it is ageist. I mean she can't help her age.

Handyweatherstation · 07/09/2025 18:19

Not to me it doesn't. This thread has been pretty light hearted on the whole and it sounds like a fair few of us have finally realised why one or both of our armpits smell weird and horrible, plus there are plenty of tips on what can be done about it. I'm very glad to have read it.

menopausalfart · 07/09/2025 18:19

@BruceLeTerror Maybe we should stop talking about the weird shit that happens to our bodies when we go through the menopause?
I had no idea about most of the stuff I've gone through, and at one point thought that I should be committed as my mental health was through the floor.

Well even if these threads pop up regularly I've never read one before, and I've it informative and interesting.
Thanks BruceLeTerror

I used to be on the Menopause Matters forum and lost count of the number of new posters who thought they were either dying/going insane before finding out that their experiences were normal. Many women haven't got a clue what to expect - I didn't and my younger cousin didn't either when I talked to her about menopause, partly because neither of us had any older women family to ask for advice. Threads like this are so valuable. We really do need to talk about our changing bodies, a lot.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/09/2025 18:26

Adding my voice to the 'thanks for the thread' crew - it can be hard to talk about this kind of thing which is why an online thread is perfect. And can we really be 'ageist' if we're all talking about ourselves?

menopausalfart · 07/09/2025 18:28

@Handyweatherstation I wish I had known. As it is, most of my 40s can be written off.

abracadabra1980 · 07/09/2025 18:29

Isn’t the old lady smell possibly from when all women over a certain age used to wear tights. So encased in nylon all day, they’d leave the loo and possibly their ‘sweaty underwear smell’ behind. In those days we had a separate toilet and bathroom and I can definitely remember a ‘mum smell’ after she’d been in.

Mum23plusC · 07/09/2025 18:38

Yes. Like a sugar puff type smell (to me anyway).

Calliopespa · 07/09/2025 18:45

Does this mean Quaker sugar puffs? Ie; if we buy a box and sniff is that the smell?

Vynalbob · 07/09/2025 18:46

I thought it was excessive sugar (diabetic for a year only smelling it when I haven't stuck to good foods)....seemed logical but maybe I'm wrong....I'll have a chat (to an ai as they're always there)to the docs when I'm there next.

GAJLY · 07/09/2025 18:51

I did smell funny until I had my gall bladder removed!

DeeKitch · 07/09/2025 18:52

Thanks for this OP

lighthearted and informative 🌸 for the onion pits

Oldglasses · 07/09/2025 18:57

I smell normal but if I sweat I smell of curry! Has been like that for years!!

I'm not offended and you're not a 'smelly menopausal woman' anymore than I am (I'm 55).

Most of my time working closely with middle aged and older people was when I was much younger so you'd think I would have noticed if they all developed a distinctive smell).

What you are is a woman who potentially has some sort of health condition. Ditto your mum.
