Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

Maybe that's why behind the ears, nape of the neck and cleavage are places to traditionally spray your perfume? To disguise any smell.

I thought it was pulse points, which are a bit warmer usually so help the perfume be more perceptible 🤷🏻‍♀️

PersephoneParlormaid · 07/09/2025 10:22

I go to a gym and frequently the men don’t flush after a wee ( I’m assuming it’s men as the wee is brown and there’s no loo roll down there) and my god it smells bad. I assumed it was testosterone or something, but it has a smell all of its own.

TonTonMacoute · 07/09/2025 10:26

I am very conscious of being very stinky first thing, it's worst on my chest as I am quite large of boob. I would say it was quite oniony, I call it my old lady smell, and I hate it.

I think Pears soap does a good enough job of getting rid of it though.

Lime tree blossom is a beautiful perfume. I stayed in a B and B/hotel in Tamworth a few years ago and I kept getting these waves of wonderful scent wafting in through the windows from a huge lime trees over the road.

Having a wee is when I smell different too!

And me! Not all the time though. A sort of musty/mouldy smell, difficult to describe. Can't pinpoint the source. Underwear smells fine. Toilet roll, after a wee, smells fine. No discharges. I'm 56 - last period was about 12 monrh ago. This started abour 2 years ago.

Another who has the onion armpits. Having never had smelly underarms before, I am horrified at the onion smell! How long does this last??

I had it for about 3 years in the run up to last period. Was a fat sweaty mess, cold sweats at night too. Post menopause I hardly sweat or smell at all, I am fitter and have lost weight but even so I don't sweat much when hot.

I think DH smells funny! It’s coming from everywhere. He’s 44. Anyone else’s?

Yes!! Similar age! It's hard to describe the smell, it's not musty but it's like hospital

Toooldtopretend · 07/09/2025 10:44

OMG - every time I get some new symptom from being mid 40’s (hair loss being my major concern) I think things can’t get worse. Then I read this thread…

Can I add 'yeasty' to the mix please? Palms of hands, boobs and armpits.

I'm 64 (just want to make sure ALL bases are covered). And I'm loving the honesty of this thread and obsessively sniffing myself now.

I haven't noticed a change to the way my wee smells (yet) but have definitely noticed that my sweat smells different, particularly when I've exercised - somehow quite masculine and, yeah, yeasty. To the extent that I've found it hard to get it out of gym clothes, especially leggings. Going on HRT hasn't really improved this.

Am now soaking leggings in a 1/4 mix of white vinegar and water over night, before washing them. Does help, but it's a pain in the arse...

That's exactly how I'm feeling too.

My mum seems to have developed a smell that I can only describe as bleach-y. Do you mean something like that?

Calliopespa · 07/09/2025 10:48

How did people even tolerate each other in the days before domestic plumbing to flush the urine, shower the body etc?

Please don't let the answer be they were all dead by this age ...

Bio-kult always used to be the best for variety of content and strength. Consultants at our local Children’s hospital used to use it for themselves and patients so that was good enough for me 😁

The official advice is sceptical. https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/probiotics/ I'll stick with my yogurt.

Probiotics

Probiotics are thought to help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your gut when it's been disrupted by an illness or treatment. There's some evidence that probiotics may be helpful in some cases, but there's little evidence to support many heal...

@LukcyAnt I think synthetics are just prone to this, do you have any cotton gym wear? M&S Goodmoves is good, got me through menopause and weight gain and still smelt clean.

I read about the Semen tree in a book.
It smells awful , I call it the cum tree.
There is two outside the school , smell is worse in the Autumn.

Horse chestnut when it's flowering. Absolutely stinks of semen.

soupyspoon · 07/09/2025 11:00

Yes its probably the older person smell, I cant stand it and have bought that persimmon soap, although not always because its quite expensive. OH has it and my parents have it really bad. Its normal and natural but I cant stand it and will do anything I can to stave it off myself

QueenClinomania · 07/09/2025 11:02

I'm in my 50s and yes, i have a weird smell now.
It's not really like anything except itself.
Its impossible (for me anyway) to pin down.

I'm going to try that soap people have suggested.

What an excellent thread @BruceLeTerror, I don't know whether to laugh or cry at some of the posts.

And as for buying soap for old lady smell - no, I just cannot do it!! Getting older is just so full of fun😂

Thanks! It was a genuine question, honestly never expected this sort of response 😂
At least we’re not alone 😂

Is it your urine? are you dehydrated?

Tartantotty · 07/09/2025 11:10

This could be your diet, so try to avoid fast and processed food. Also, drink lots of water to clean your system.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 07/09/2025 11:10

I wonder if this smell is why Green Tea perfumes and the more cologne y fragrances are more popular these days/in hot weather?

I spray Green Tea liberally in the summer in an effort to feel "fresh" in the heat.

Fatlittlefruits · 07/09/2025 11:14

Thank you this thread Op.

I remember late parents having 3 'normal' (i.e. when clean) smells - menopausal (mum loo), illness (Dad cancer) and old age (from late 70s). Stronger at times than others.

I have started getting symptoms of GSM/atrophy and actually thought on Friday night "gosh, I can smell mum". I've started on the Estriol Cream and Optibac for Women so will see if that makes a difference. I've have also just contributed to the Persimmon Soap sales spike on Amazon.

It isn't the hair loss, it's the facial hair that kills me. I could audition for P T Barnum!

I’m so glad some one else said onion arm pits ! It’s awful , I shower with bar soap and apply deodorant but wake in the morning thinking I fell asleep in a kebab ( which unfortunately I didn’t !)

I had this for a while but left pit only, read that it can be to do with low magnesium levels, added multi vitamin and went on hrt and it seems to have gone.

Alondra · 07/09/2025 11:19

You are not wrong, OP. As we age we develop "smells" never noticeable when we were younger.

Think about it this way. Do babies smell a certain way? Most of us know they do. As babies grow older that particular smell disappears and small children, teenagers, and young people smell very little.

The older we get, hormonal changes and the natural degradation of fatty acids make our body odour stronger. It has nothing to do with showering and cleanliness, it's the natural degradation of our bodies as we age./
