Magnesium Glycinate

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 24/09/2024 07:32

I'm very sensitive to taking anything and had to come off HRT because it made me feel awful.

My aches, sleeplessness and anxiety had returned. So I tried some magnesium. Just slept through the night and DIDN'T wake up with racing thoughts at 5am for the first time in several weeks!

I think I'm less achy too. Hope it lasts. 👏

I'm considering buying the magnesium glycinate from Superdrugs along with the menopause supplements (link below) that also contains magnesium but am wondering if I'll be taking too much magnesium each day.

https://www.superdrug.com/health/vitamins-supplements/multi-vitamins/new-leaf-menopause-supplements-turmeric-ashwagandha/p/mp-00022437

Anyone taking this combination?

That's only got 50mg of magnesium in two tablets so you don't need to worry about taking too much magnesium.

Yellowwhite · 25/09/2024 06:50

Thank you. I'll order both online 🤞

Hepherlous · 25/09/2024 07:01

The Solgar Magnesium glycinate is labelled chelated magnesium. And I bloody love it as it makes me feel happy. That and HRT.

Heartbreaktuna · 25/09/2024 07:06

Rhonda Patrick is a good source for supplement information and health.
I take 300mg through supplementation and remainder through diet

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 25/09/2024 07:36

Took magnesium glycinate just before bed rather than at dinner time and can report a better night. I still woke up, but was less awake when I woke so got back to sleep again quickly.

ssd · 25/09/2024 08:26

Ive just looked at what ive been taking for years and im confused.

For a start, my boots magnesium 375mg, is actually 2 tablets a day ( they are 187.5mg each).....ive only been taking 1 a day...my mistake....

Also my vit d is 25 ug, one a day

What confuses me is both bottles say "do not exceed the stated dose"

But if i take the recommended ones here (which i want to take) i would be taking far far more than im taking now, which doesn't seem to be recommended.

I had a blood test a couple of months ago which came back fine ( just to confuse matters), so should i increase my dose so much?

As i said i have health anxiety which ,however much i unpick it, is as strong as ever. And my bladder is rubbish. But i sleep ok, apart from toilet visits...

Im not sure what to take now.

ssd · 25/09/2024 08:30

I'd be taking 4 x the strength of vitamin d I take now and about 5 x the strength of magnesium I'm taking now.

Doggymummar · 25/09/2024 08:36

My doctor told me supplements just make expensive pee! I had been spending £1000s on supplements recommended by my menopause nutritionist. Turns out she got commission. I say do whatever makes you feel better, if you think it works, it probably does. I don't take any anymore and feel richer, but no different.

Pixiedust1234 · 25/09/2024 08:36

@ssd it means don't take more than is stated on that particular bottle. There are usually many ingredients including caking agents , ie magnesium stearate which can cause diarrhoea or stomach issues. If you need higher strength then use a different one.

For example you need 100mg
Bottle A is 50mg per tablet, one a day.
Bottle B is 50mg per tablet, twice/two a day.
Bottle C is 100mg per tablet, one a day.
Therefore Bottles B and C are okay, Bottle A is not.

ssd · 25/09/2024 09:15

But how do you know what you need? Is it just try it and see if you feel better?

Ive heard vitamins just make expensive pee too. But i think that's maybe true if you eat a varied diet. I dont, im getting fussier as i get older. Thats why i like taking vitamins, they feel like a back up to me. Im not on hrt either.

bifurCAT · 25/09/2024 12:48

Has anyone compared this to the other chelates of magnesium like citrate?

schloss · 25/09/2024 13:04

@JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods @bifurCAT This thread is very informative about the different types of magnesium and what we need. There are some posters on there who take the differing types I do in the morning and evening.

To help your bladder, you should look into using vaginal estrogen. That's what you need. Don't suffer when there are ways to sort this- talk to your GP or if you don't want to, buy Gina over the counter in pharmacies.

You don't need vitamins except Vit D.
My consultant says they are a complete waste of money.
Just eat the food that is good for you.

Some are actually harmful.

More and more research is coming out on the dangers of calcium supplements that women are 'supposed' to take for bone health but a) they make no difference unless you get no calcium from food and b) they are now being shown to cause blocked arteries.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 24/09/2024 16:37

Let us know if it makes a difference 👍

I'm also waking at 5 am unable to get back to sleep! I'm definitely trying these. Thanks OP

CeruleanDive · 25/09/2024 16:07

I very much appreciate your tireless advice on menopause on here, @JinglingSpringbells, but I don't think sharing your consultant's comment in this context is particularly responsible:

"You don't need vitamins except Vit D. My consultant says they are a complete waste of money. Just eat the food that is good for you."

ssd has already said that she has a limited diet.

I could link you to studies of magnesium deficiency in women of menopausal age, but that wouldn't help ssd much.

@ssd, the NHS guidance for magnesium is in these screenshots (taken from: www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/others/). I hope that is reassuring.

The NHS isn't always up to date on nutrition by any means. It was very slow to recognise the importance of vitamin D. But they will be very cautious, so if they say up to 400mg of magnesium as supplements is safe, you can be confident that it is.

Thank you @CeruleanDive @JinglingSpringbells , thanks too but ive used vagifem for years and its made no difference. I also take solefenacin and i dont want to increase the dose but probably should. Im considering something i seen on dragons den called Jude, but its expensive.

Had deregged (and probably will again imminently) but just wanted to post to say what has really helped me with getting back to sleep/calming racing thoughts is discovering all the Alister Cooke “Letter from America” episodes on BBC Sounds/podcast apps. His delivery is like a sleep tonic. Obviously this has no relevance to preventing waking up or magnesium but as soon as I wake up now and have any suspicion my brain is going to start fizzing, I either put one on at a very low volume (if DH is away) or put one headphone in and it sends me right back to sleep. I can wake 4 or 5 times a night but am not stressed about it now as I know it’ll only be momentarily. Just thought I’d post of the off chance it helped anyone else.

I always pop a podcast on if I can't sleep too ☺️

I woke at 6:30 this morning so a bit earlier. Am going to give it another go tonight.

@ssd If your bladder is really bothering you, have you tried increasing the dose of Vagifem?

Several years ago (maybe 10?) the dose was 25mcg. Now it's 10.
I have no idea why it was changed but at the time there was a bit of any 'outcry' on forums, querying why.

Many women use it daily or 4-5 times a week which brings it up to the dose that they used to get before the dose was reduced.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 26/09/2024 07:37

I woke up this morning around 6 and didn't ache like i normally do. I just felt more relaxed. So had a wee and went straight back to sleep. No racing thoughts.

It's definitely had an effect on that feeling I've had for ages that I've been sleeping but with everything tensed up. Honestly some mornings I've woken up recently and I can't move i'm so stiff. That's what feels better. I feel better rested. More relaxed.

@JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods
Can you let me know which brand you used again ( I'm on the app and can't seem to select all your messages!)
I'm waking every night in the early hours and take over an hour to get back to sleep!
Thank you! ☺️

herecomesthesunyes · 26/09/2024 08:49

@JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods thanks very much for posting this. It sounds like something I need in my life! I had a look at the healthy metals site that you use. It looks great, but very pricey! I see that you can refer a friend for a five day free trial and you get £2.50. Would you possibly be able to do that for me please? I’d love to try it. Thanks

ssd · 26/09/2024 08:52

@JinglingSpringbells , yes i read that before about the dose. I tried it every day for a while and it made no difference. I also tried cutting out normal tea and using decaf, May i should do that again. I really dont know.

ssd · 26/09/2024 08:53

@JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods , that's great it seems to be helping you🤞🤞

ssd · 26/09/2024 09:01

@CeruleanDive , im sorry to keep on but the link you posted said up to 400mg of magnesium is fine but the link you posted for the new life product from superdrug is 1040mg per tablet, surely that's taking too much every day,.?
Im sorry to pick holes, i do want to get a better vitamin regime in place, but like op im very sensitive to medication and im scared I'll overdose myself.
Thanks for all your help
