Magnesium Glycinate

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 24/09/2024 07:32

I'm very sensitive to taking anything and had to come off HRT because it made me feel awful.

My aches, sleeplessness and anxiety had returned. So I tried some magnesium. Just slept through the night and DIDN'T wake up with racing thoughts at 5am for the first time in several weeks!

I think I'm less achy too. Hope it lasts. 👏

Where did you buy it? I take magnesium but its from boots and is just called magnesium 375mg. Is this different to the glycinate stuff?

ssd · 24/09/2024 07:46

Like you, im sensitive to stuff. Hrt made me feel awful and setraline made me bleed. I only take vitamins now but i dont really know what/where to buy them.

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 24/09/2024 07:51

I also peri and very sensitive to hormones. I've been taking magnesium oxite for a month and the difference to my sleep has been amazing. However it gives me really bad diarrhoea!! I'm currently deciding whether to try magnesium glycerate instead or to just continue with the 200 tablets I have left!! 🤣

JinglingSpringbells · 24/09/2024 08:01

If you can get your HRT 'right' it should sort out all of your symptoms far better than supplements. HRT should not make you feel terrible if it's the right type and dose.

Unfortunately, a lot of women give up on HRT because their GPs aren't always experienced enough to suggest some of the many options around types and doses- they can just prescribe a patch or tablets and don't take into account all the other options.

Would you like to say what you have tried - type, dose and for how long?

Kiuyni · 24/09/2024 08:02

I take magnesium glycinate and it does help, but I'd be amazed if it helped immediately? I'm also on HRT though. I find the utrogestan part makes me sleep really well.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 24/09/2024 08:03

Magnesium glycinate IMHO is the BIZ. I take it twice a day and it has a much milder effect on my digestive system. It really helps with my sleep too.

I found it after doing a lot of (armchair) research on Magnesium. Our bodies don’t always absorb Mg… it depends on the type. Read the blurb and look for ‘bioavailability’.

Some Mg affects your digestive system more than others.

Lulubellamozarella · 24/09/2024 08:14

Jumping in on this as I also came off HRT because it just made me feel awful. My GP recommended Magnesium Glycinate to help with my 'wired' feeling. I felt constantly unsettled and like my body was being pumped with adrenalin. It was awful. I would wake in the night with a start (like from a nightmare but with no nightmare) and my heart would be racing. It was hideous and left me feeling exhausted. This was one of my worst perimenopause symptoms. After doing some research on the magnesium glycinate I purchased some from Amazon with great reviews. Lots of people that suffered with restless legs etc saying how they have stopped it completely. I have to say taking this supplement has been a game changer for me. Its like it has completed reset my system and settled me down. I sleep better and no longer wake in the night. I take one in the morning and a second before bed.

I also take a general perimenopause supplement, also from Amazon, called Esme which has taken the edge off all my other peri symptoms.

LondonBagpuss · 24/09/2024 08:14

I can also vouch for the benefits of Magnesium glycinate for menopause induced insomnia. I buy it for £9.99 from Amazon. Can definitely notice the difference when I don't take it.

CeruleanDive · 24/09/2024 08:15

A gentle way of taking magnesium is via a skin spray. You can start with just a few squirts and build up. (It can make the skin tingle at first by that usually wears off with use).

It's often on offer at Boots, Superdrug or Holland and Barratt.

@ssd, I'd also take a vitamin D supplement, that's recommended for pretty much everyone now by the NHS. Best to get one with vitamin K2 in, eg:

www.superdrug.com/health/vitamins-supplements/vitamin-d/new-leaf-vitamin-d3-k2-tablets-d3-4000iu-k2-100mcg/p/mp-00021938#fragment$%20%7C%20async

What are the issues you want to take supplements for?

ssd · 24/09/2024 08:21

Thanks @CeruleanDive . My issues are mainly anxiety and a racing mind. Physically I'm fine.

Tbf any product can claim "bioavailability", it's meaningless as a word on a packet.

JinglingSpringbells · 24/09/2024 08:25

Do remember that the benefits of HRT outweigh risks for women under 60. You're getting support for bone and heart health.

ssd · 24/09/2024 08:27

I take vit D3 25ug, is that a low dose?

Kiuyni · 24/09/2024 08:28

I have osteopenia and at my hrt check up the nurse said HRT is the first and best medication for bones. She also said I could be on it until I was 80! Which I intend!

I agree with @JinglingSpringbells that HRT shouldn't necessarily be dismissed after one try. Did you try patches/gel rather than tablets?

Is this the magnesium you've got?
https://www.boots.com/boots-magnesium-375-mg-60-tablets-%281-month-supply%29-10317534

If so it's magnesium oxide (it will say on the back) which isn't particularly used for anxiety. Magnesium glycinate or threonate more suggested for anxiety. I'll link a product.

CeruleanDive · 24/09/2024 08:36

ssd · 24/09/2024 08:27

I take vit D3 25ug, is that a low dose?

That's a quarter of dose of the one I linked.

The problem with the NHS telling everyone to take a low dose vitamin D and not testing much any more is that I'm sure quite a lot of people with a serious deficiency are being missed. Not suggesting that's you, but for anyone properly deficient a much higher dose is prescribed.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 24/09/2024 09:13

@JinglingSpringbells I've tried various types of HRT over 2 years. Some good effects some bad. I've decided constant heart palpitations and additional weight gain are not for me.
HRT is not for everyone.

It was Healthy Metal. They sent me a free sample of 5 sachets. They are powder you dissolve in water. I prefer not to take pills. Took it before bed.

Could just be chance it worked I suppose. But I have been waking up feeling crap at 5 every morning fir so long now. I'm delighted to have broken the cycle.

I also respond very immediately to HRT regarding the aches and pains.

Will take again tonight & report back.

@CeruleanDive , thank you so much and I'd appreciate a link for the magnesium you recommend, it is the boots one i have. I admit i came off hrt as i started spotting around 5 months and it freaked me out as i have health anxiety around cancer. It stopped as soon as i came off hrt and im too scared to try again. It was everol conti 50 patches.

Op, im sorry for jumping on to your thread, but thanks for starting it.

Great that the HRT works for you!
I feel horrendous on the Utrogestan. Even when taken vaginally.

@ssd no worries. Thought it might help some people. Not everyone gets on with HRT. Interested to hear what helps others.

I'm very sensitive to any medications too so placemarking to see if your next night is as good as the first. It's so lovely to have that rare full night!

Heatherbell1978 · 24/09/2024 09:29

I've been taking magnesium glycinate along with HRT for quite a while now to help with peri insomnia. It hasn't been a quick fix for me but I notice a difference if I don't take it. I tend to wake up with racing thoughts. The magnesium doesn't necessarily stop me waking but when I do I don't seem to have the same busy mind.
A game changer for me has been taking an anti histamine before bed. The cheap drowsy type. My histamine levels have felt elevated for a while now (sneezing, itchy nose, itchy eyes) which I assume is another delightful peri symptom so it supports that too.

ssd · 24/09/2024 08:27

I take vit D3 25ug, is that a low dose?

25ug = 1000 iu (in case you only see iu listed).

1000 is a winter maintenance dose for healthy people.
5000 is the maximum for a general Vit D deficiency, no more should be taken without blood tests and a GP oversight. Best to have less though.
In severe cases doctors can prescribe 20,000.

Vit D should really be taken with Vitamin K as the Vit K helps take it out of the bloodstream and into your bones. Think of iron and the Vit C aiding absorption. I take the Better You 3000 spray with added Vit K as I have Lupus and can't be in sunlight/housebound.
