Farting my way through my 50's

WTAF? I'd leave me if I was married to myself- I started farting early menopause and 4 years on, am still bloody farting like an old dog. Loud, unexpected and deeply embarrassing. Drink lots of fluids, eat well and exercise. HRT has made no difference. Anyone else had this - and PLEASE throw suggestions at me!

What's your diet like? Have to tried anything to help gut health?

Lifesyoungdream · 04/01/2023 09:20

I am at an age now where I fart when I stand up. It is embarrassing.

scryingeyes · 04/01/2023 09:20

I used to laugh at my nan for farting getting uo
from a chair - now that's me , it's not funny any more. Cringe!

Abouttimemum · 04/01/2023 09:20

My back end is absolutely horrendous. I have no clue how my DH puts up with it. Foul. It seems to be IBS but I’ve tried everything and nothing makes any difference long term. I’ve just started Kefir after much research so we’ll see how that goes!

Rebelyells · 04/01/2023 09:26

I found pelvic floor exercises seemed to help at least the ability to hold them in till it was more socially acceptable to let rip! However I have also accepted that farting is both inevitable and funny as I age - embrace the gas Smile

I spend my life mincing around, holding them in

I used to be a right farty pants. I always drink tea, like copious amounts, every drink would be tea. I have always had allergies, started on oranges, moved onto raw meat, stomach aches, sitting on the loo, trouble breathing etc, so used to keep a food diary. I figured out, the farting was linked to milk. I still ate cheese, butter etc. Swapped it out for oat milk,no more farting. So I would say keep a food diary and cut out 1 thing that you eat/drink daily and see if it makes a difference.

You can do exercises that are very specific, like kegels, that focus on the sphincter. You will see a huge difference in two weeks. Please dont accept that this has to be your life.

Do you have a prolapse? If so, wind can get trapped in the kink or pouch.

That's interesting. The only thing that's changed for me lifestyle wise is the menopause. Eat and drink the same.

I am peri at the moment and endlessly farty. The only thing that makes a difference is low sugar and no pasta- pasta being the absolute worst culprit!

Eve · 04/01/2023 09:37

dairy causes me digestive issues - and I couldn't resist all the cheese over xmas but now back to diary free.

Bepis · 04/01/2023 09:39

I don't mean to sound disgusting but does anyone else have horrendous smelling farts too? Mine could really peel the wall paper off and I don't know why they are like that. DH can fart and it there is no smell at all.

Itisbetter · 04/01/2023 09:39

I tried going listen free last Easter and it’s been brilliant. I did lose weight but I did it because I just felt off and stodgy all the time. It’s been fantastic for me. I feel like I did ten years ago😮. Aching joints much more manageable, clearer thinking, more “happy” as a default, less bloating and as a happy by product lose a couple of pounds every month or so (I’m overweight so can afford to lose another stone if I have to). Honestly great. I don’t really do gluten free bread or specialist products though, I just eat rice and potatoes instead of bread/pasta. My body likes it to the point that I just do it and rarely feel any restriction at all.

Haha to be fair my 3 year old finds the whole thing hilarious which is a silver lining!

I found that a low carb breakfast helps. Muesli is particularly bad. I now have an egg, halloumi and mushrooms. It was just to control the sugar crashes but has definitely helped reduce flatulence.
