Hiya folks. I noticed in an old discussion you were trying to get a meet up organised. Did it ever happen? I am new to mumsnet. I have a 19 month old son and would like to chat to local mums. I am based in Edinburgh!! Hope to hear from you soon!!!

Debbiej - we had a meet-up about a year ago in Edinburgh and then tried to organise another one in Glasgow earlier this year, which never came to fruition.

We could have another go - as far as I can make out, there is a smattering of Mums throughout central Scotland and some further afield, like Susanmt in the Western Isles. I'm from Glasgow.

Tissy · 17/07/2003 09:24

I'm in Ayrshire

Bobsmum · 17/07/2003 09:40

I'm from Glasgow but have been exiled to Hertfordshire - booooo. But - I'm going to Millport for my holidays next week - I'll wave at you Tissy - we could meet on Arran!!
I'm unfeasibly excited to be back in Scotland in 8 days.i'm taking my totsbots on a pilgrimage to their homeland.

Tissy · 17/07/2003 10:03

Millport!! Once spent a lovely day throwing up there when I was pregnant! Did you hear the radio 4 comedy series about Millport, last year I think?

I should go to Arran again- have only been once, and only for a few hours at that. Its very difficult to get a ferry crossing at short notice at this time of the year though and I'm not organised enough to book in advance!

mears · 17/07/2003 10:08

Do you know I live in Ayrshire and have neve been to Millport in my life. Would it be a recoomended day trip with children ranging from 9-16 years?

Tissy - wouldn't it be really strange meeting - it might turn out we know each other. That might ruin the mystique!

Bobsmum · 17/07/2003 10:16

Mears - it's really a lovely place. Seaside town, stuck in the 1960s with nice cafes and daft souvenir shops run by mad old ladies.

The Millport Sweet Shop sells the best butter tablet IN THE WORLD.

You can cycle round the island (10.5 miles) at a leisurely pace in around 2/3 hours. There's a nice cafe halfway round at Fintry Bay.

Last time I went with dh, we went on loads of boat trips up and down the firth of Clyde and on the Waverley. Next week is ds' first holiday - he's going to see the sea for the first time - ahhhhh!

There's a university aquarium, crazy golf and loads of bike hire places (Bremners in Cardiff Street is the best ) The beaches are good and there are lots of walks on the island. Ferry crossing is 8 minutes from Largs so you have no excuse for never having been! See you next week!!

Janeway · 17/07/2003 10:17

I'd be interested - I'm in Edinburgh but open to travel around the central belt. DS is 16mo and very sociable

Tissy · 17/07/2003 10:20

Yes it would be strange, mears. I visit your end of the trust fairly regularly and every time I see a midwife, I wonder if its you!!!

Jasper's around here as well isn't she? We could have a really cliquey Ayrshire meetup

Millport is quite quiet and sleepy- I'd say it was good day trip for kids (unless your 16 year old is a stroppy one who wants action!). You can easily cycle round the Island, walk it even. There are beaches to lie on/ go rock pooling. Ice cream shops, pubs for lunch...you could fly kites, play ball...I'm scraping the barrel here, maybe someone else has done it with kids, I was not very observant when I went!!

Bobsmum · 17/07/2003 10:25

Just to add, we went every year at the end of our summer holidays for 10 years from about age 7. As a family we loved it so much M & D bought a 2 room flat on the island and that's where dh, ds & I are staying - freebie holiday!!!!

Bobsmum · 17/07/2003 10:27

Janeway - dh has noticed you posting before and got all excited about there being a trekkie on Mumsnet - say it aint so??

mears · 17/07/2003 10:27

I'm the gobby midwife winding up the managers

JanZ · 17/07/2003 10:29

Shall we first of all see who is interested in a meet-up and then work out where would be most convenient.

I'm easy about whether to do it with or without kids - dh could look after ds if necessary. A lunch at a weekend would probably be best for me.

Bobsmum - my childminder has a house/flat in Millport and goes off with her family most weekends (which is why we need to pick ds up at 5 on a Friday!).

tamum · 17/07/2003 10:38

I'm in Edinburgh and would certainly be interested, but I'm about to go away for 3 weeks, so I'll check this thread when I get back and see if I can make it! My children are 5 and 8, so I probably wouldn't bring them. Good idea, debbiej!

Bobsmum · 17/07/2003 10:42

I'm afraid I'll only be in Scotland from 25th July for a fortnight, unless a miracle happens and dh's job gets transferred to Glasgow...if only

butterflymum · 17/07/2003 11:07

I will be home in Scotland for part of August so will keep an eye on this thread also. As it is unlikely there will be any Northern Ireland meet ups, this is my next best hope (lol).

Harrysmum · 17/07/2003 11:22

I'm in Aberdeen (not v central!) but my family are in East Lothian so consider myself an Edinburgh girl. Should be in Edinburgh the second weekend in August if that's any use?

Tissy · 17/07/2003 11:24

Whereabouts in Hertfordhsire are you Bobsmum? My Mum and sister live in St Albans.

M2T · 17/07/2003 11:39

I am in Falkirk, so I'm only 30 mins from Edinburgh and I'd love to go!

M2T · 17/07/2003 11:43

I spent a week in Millport at the Marine Biology Research Unit during my degree. There were Dolphins swimming right in front of our accomodation.
Millport is gorgeous and all us 70 students took over the pubs! It was fab.... my Gran also has a holiday home there.

Loobie · 17/07/2003 11:53

i would be up for an edinburgh meet up any time, i would have to bring the crew 1@7,1@5 and dd 8 mths as i have no one to look after them for me but certainly count me in just let me know when and where.

Bobsmum · 17/07/2003 12:35

Tissy - I'm in Hemel Hempstead, so 5 mins up the road from your mum. We'd love to be able to afford to live in St Albans, Hemel's a bit depressing really

Janeway · 17/07/2003 12:38

Bobsmum - the name was given by my work mates at a lazerquest outing, but yes I do like sci-fi, and I'm not the only one, my early postings seam to spare a long list of self sci-fi outings - your dh could look here

Janeway · 17/07/2003 12:40

oops- the link thing didn't seam to work

try this

Tissy · 17/07/2003 12:59

Bobsmum, Snorbans may be nice (in parts) but the money my sister and her husband are paying for their 3 bed semi would pay for three detached houses up here. I'm never going back (except for free holidays with my Mum of course!)

Bobsmum · 17/07/2003 13:10

Tissy - we've been here 4 years in August and have been desperate to move back up north ever since - hate it hate it hate it
Our 3 bed mid terrace is ok, but it's an ex-council house and the equivalent in Scotland would be a third of the price. I just see our money going down the drain every month living down here.
Every time we go to Scotland for a visit we end up drooling outside estate agents.
And don't even get me started on the water. I always bring back bottles of Glasgow tap water for my cups of tea!
If you do have a meet up, I'm soo tempted to jump on queasyjet and come along.
