N. Derbyshire/S. Yorks Mums?

SmileyC · 19/04/2007 21:44

Hi
This is my first post on mumsnet. I moved up to Derbyshire from down south and have a one year old son. I'm a happily married fulltime mum.

I'm hoping to find some people who live fairly close-by (I live near Chesterfield);people who might know of local (child-friendly) places to visit etc and also may want to meet up for pushchair walks/lunch etc. My family and most of my friends are down south and I sometimes find it a bit lonely at home with my little boy (I'm sure I'm not the only one?)

I have a car and so can travel.

Hi, i'm in Barnsley, South Yorkshire not sure if that's too far fom you though. There's a few of us who regularly meet up and 2 of them are from down South you'd fit right in

mytwopenceworth · 19/04/2007 21:53

hi. which side of chesterfield are you?

SmileyC · 19/04/2007 22:03

Wow- what a fast response! Thanks.

Phoenix- No, Barnsley is not too far. I used to travel alot for my job (part of the reason why I have not really made alot of friends up this way yet-no office/work colleagues to get to know). I used to travel to all parts of the UK so Barnsley is local to me!

My2pworth- I am on the east of CF. But like I said to Phoenix, travel is not really an issue, only in terms of DS and hence I'm trying to find local ish people to meet with/chat to. I live in a small village near Bolsover (if you've heard of it!)

SmileyC · 19/04/2007 22:08

We're on the Barnsley/Wakefield/Huddersfield meet-up thread if you fancy meeting anytime. We've been chatting tonight so it should be near the top in the meet-up section

mytwopenceworth · 19/04/2007 22:13

hemel hempstead.

SmileyC · 19/04/2007 22:15

Phoenix-thanks for that. I will pop on and post when I get a minute. This seems like a great website. I had no idea there was a meet-ups section, or else I would have been on here ages ago. I sort of got myself stuck in a rut after a while and am trying to find baby groups and other ways to meet new friends. This looks like a great way of doing it.

My2pworth- I was born in Hitchin but ended up in Tewin (tiny village) & then Welwyn (Near Welwyn Garden City). I used to have a great time going round that "magic" roundabout thing in Hemel!!!!! The first time I went round it I was a passenger and thought it was mad! You anywhere near the Barnsfield fire?

OP posts:
SmileyC · 19/04/2007 22:24

My2pworth- whereabouts in the dales are you?

OP posts:
mytwopenceworth · 19/04/2007 22:24

you mean Buncefield? yeah, we'd left by then, but our old houe was very close - erm 5 roundabouts away!!

my mate got thrown out of bed by the explosion!!

mytwopenceworth · 19/04/2007 22:25

near bakewell

SmileyC · 19/04/2007 22:26

Ooh yeah, ooops sorry. Bad memory for names. Yes, we had some friends who lived v close too. They were evacuated for a number of days I think. My mum could see the smoke in the air from work in Hitchin!

OK, that's not too far away. Do you meet with others form MN? Have you found it helpful? How many children do you have/ages?

OP posts:
SmileyC · 19/04/2007 22:32

Phoenix- what about your children?

Just a general question too- am looking for a 2nds playgroup to take DS to. I've heard of PEEPS groups. I think surestart do them and so do other independant groups. Have either of you tried peeps?

Astrophe · 19/04/2007 22:37

SmileyC, Hi I am in Derby, and there are a couple of others I know of in Derbyshire who would be closer to you I think - I shall direct them to your thread.

When was your DS born? The other midlanders I know on here are from our ante/post natal thread - our DCs were one in March.

PhoenixGirl · 19/04/2007 22:37

I've got 1 ds 14 month old. You?

Astrophe · 19/04/2007 22:40

PEEPS - I got a leaflet from surestart in the mail today all about their peep groups. Stands for Parent educational something partnership? I have heard from some that they are good, and from others that they are really basic - eg this is how you talk to a baby, this is how you play with blocks with a baby etc. I'm sure it depends on which group though. Personally I find non-surestart groups more friendly than surestart ones, but again, depends on the group.

Astrophe · 19/04/2007 22:41

Me Phoenix? DS is 13 1/2. Are you on Friz's Feb thread then?

Astrophe · 19/04/2007 22:42

oh I see now you were asking Smiley

mytwopenceworth · 19/04/2007 22:43

no i havent done any mn meets.

my kids are 6 and 7.

mytwopenceworth · 19/04/2007 22:44

anyway, got to go, dh is gagging for the computer!

hope to catch you around mn again soon - welcome, but i tell you now, you'll get hooked and life will never be the same again!!

PhoenixGirl · 19/04/2007 22:45

Yes i'm on Feb with Frizbe. lol

SmileyC · 19/04/2007 22:45

Hi Astrophe. Thanks for telling your friends about me. I'm glad I thougt of posting on here now and that someone kindly directed me to the meet-ups, which I had not spotted.
Have you been to Markeaton Park? I believe there's a walk there in May for SIDs?

In answer to both Astrophe & Phoenix, DS is 13months old and also turned one in March!

It's great to be chatting to some "locals". The other site I post on is great but we are all spread so far apart that meet-ups are not very feasible (sp?)
