Brockwell Park!

What about a Brockwell Park meet-up? So many current MN-ers are in Brixton and surrounding areas, and so many others have nostalgic memories of Brockwell Park from when they used to live here.

An informal picnic close to the cafe on weekend afternoon? A breakfast in the cafe?

I can think of me, Bossykate, Batters, Bungalowbelle, Zeitgeist, Hallgerda, the people who were on that coat-ripping-bus thread, Spidermama, Rowan1971, Floating, Tiredteacher, SandraDee, Evey, Serenity, Drospophila (I think).

Who's up for it?

I can do the 20th

It would be nice to see some of you on the 12th at Dulwich Park too

Blu · 20/04/2007 11:16

Shame about Noddy and BelgianBun - but with so many MN-ers in the area, there could be quite regular casual get-togethers - I expext lots of us are in one of the local parks every w/e.

What about 2.30 on the flat bit of grass in front of the cafe? So that there is space (tables get a bit crowded at w/es) and the children can run about. I will flaunt some distinguishing feature - to be revealed next week - when I've thought of one! I'll bring some picnic rugs, we can use the cafe and the toilets. Don't know what we'll do if the weather is v bad.

Spider - can you point your Dulwich friend to the Dulwich park Mile for Maude?

I know! I've been stalking a woman I thought was Hallgerda - but now discovered that it isn't her!

provisionally in for 20th

Hallgerda · 24/04/2007 20:43

anniemac, the pool is expected to re-open in early July according to this.

rowan1971 · 24/04/2007 20:47

Oooh, yes please, count me in.

Spidermama · 26/04/2007 21:27

I don't suppose the paddling pool with be up and running will it? It was always a bit sporadic when I was there.

Spidermama · 26/04/2007 21:28

I'm glad the lido is still going. I remember the guys who got it going were always expecting it to be closed down at any minute. Good on them. They did a great job there.

rowan1971 · 26/04/2007 22:04

Is there a paddling pool?

My Brockwell Park experience was all pre-kids. So, I know good places to smoke spliffs (now sadly useless knowledge) and what kinds of cake they had at the cafe, but have no idea about the kids' facilities.

Hallgerda · 27/04/2007 10:22

rowan1971, yes, there's a huge paddling pool. I haven't been down there for a while, but as far as I know it's still open. It was refurbished a short while ago iirc.

There was also a rather good sand pit last time I went, so you may want to bring buckets and spades

And there are of course Urban Ducks Demanding Bread with Menaces...

Spidermama · 27/04/2007 20:21

Lol rowan. I too am familiar with the pleasant spliff spots.

I used to love walled garden but had to stop going there as soon as my kids could walk and pull rose heads off.

There's a paddling pool just to the left if you're standing looking at the entrance to the walled garden but it's easy to miss because they hardly ever fill it. It's good when they do though.

Hallgerda · 03/05/2007 12:16

rowan1971 (and any others not planning to bring their own fruit shoots ), last time I went to the cafe they had a poncetastic freshly-squeezed-orange-juice machine in which you could watch a line of oranges tumbling to their doom.

Spidermama, when DS1 was little I was often in the garden when The Angel came to tell everyone to leave. How Lambeth Council got him to wear a donkey jacket is one of life's imponderable mysteries.

Spidermama · 03/05/2007 23:09

Does that strange man still wander around with his dog in Brockwell Park. He has long hair, is often naked from the waste up, he runs around like a wild man and IIRC he has a tattoo on his forhead? I know he doesn't sound it but he's actually quite hot.

We used to call him 'The Savage' because he has the appearance that he's foraging for nuts and berries and living wild in the park.

Does anyone know who I mean? I actually talked to him a couple of times because our dogs were pals and he has the most unlikely voice. It's slightly nasal and very home counties in a Monty Python sort of way.

Ahhhhhhhh Brixton, my own sweet Brixton!

Blu · 03/05/2007 23:15

I have not seen that particular savage - but I am sure ds will be ecstatic if I tell him we will be looking out for a man known as 'The Savage'! (don't worry - I will say no such thing in front of young ears - or about coparitive spliff spots - though I have never noticed anyone being especially furtive about smoking in Brockwell Park. Perhaps we need a code for exchanging our various pre-parenthood memories of the park?)

I think the paddling pool is full - it usually has some water in the bottom anyway.

So, 2pm, Sunday 20th May.

Any more to join us?

So: gather on the grass in front of the cafe for poncetastic squeezed juice, then a roam round the bushes looking for The Savage, form a working part to drag Spidermama out fo the bushes with the savage, and on down the hill with pre-sharpened sticks to stab some rats before letting the children play in what my barrister freind calls the 'paedling Pool' because of teh court cases he has seen, and then a quick furtive last visit to favourite secluded corners of your mis-spent youth for a spliff?

It will be the MN meet-up of the year!

Hi, I'd really love to join you all. I'm not a seasoned Mumsnetter at all though :-( I only just joined as I wanted to find some local mums. I am moving from Streatham to very near Brockwell Park (Tules Hill Estate - eeek! not my choice, the council's lol!). My boy is 2 and a half and is called Oz. Do you mind if I come?

Spidermama · 03/05/2007 23:29

moomy you are very welcome of course.

Blu PMSL. Don't let her put you off moomy!

moomymama · 03/05/2007 23:31

BTW, I should add that I started my message BEFORE Blu posted her attractive round-up of the promised days events - don't want to seem desperately eager to stab rats with sticks and hang about with the local nutters (I mean you lot, not the Savage) although I am finding the prospects strangely attractive...

lol at the paedling pool!

moomymama · 03/05/2007 23:33

Thanks Spidermamma - I'm very glad to meet mums with a good sense of the ridiculous, he he he... I guess that's what living in Brixton does to ya!

Blu · 03/05/2007 23:37

Moomy - hello - and I can assure you that
a) the MN-ers I have met amongst those who are coming would certainly never be seen stabbing rats in a public park
and
b) Lots of us coming have not met anyone else from MN, so most of us will be meeting for the first time, and everyone is very welcome.

I have thought of a sign to identify myself - I'll get there a bit early and set up under a tree if v hot and sunny or in a corner without a tree if less sunny. And we'll fly Ds's small bat kite if there is any wind.
If no wind, or I can't find the bat kite, I'll think of something else which i'll post the week before. maybe pink ballons left over from the maude walk?
