Hi,

Is there anyone around from Exeter? I'm 26 and have a 15 week old daughter, so I've just come out of the exhausting newborn stage and would love to meet up with some other mums

OP posts:
fennel · 12/10/2006 16:35

H27, we moved from Manchester.

franca70 · 12/10/2006 17:01

I'm an outsider as well, I've been living in exeter for 7 yrs

h27 · 14/10/2006 12:56

franca70, have you made many friends since you have been here? where did you move from? H27

sighkotika · 14/10/2006 13:37

i just moved to about 10 miles outside exeter, from london too.

franca70 · 14/10/2006 15:19

Hi there h27, you know that in seven years I've never managed to go to tiverton, which I was told is very nice. I'm Italian and moved from Milano to exeter. yes, I've made a few friends while here, but many of them don't have kids...

Baysmum · 15/10/2006 19:36

Hello other Exeter mums - especially those of you moved here from other parts! I posted ages ago when we first moved and it was all a bit quiet so its really nice to see so many new (and older) names! I have to say its been bloody difficult getting integrated round here and I have found certain toddler groups a living hell! It is getting better though and a xmas meet up would be fab! By the way I'm in St Leonards and my ds is now 15mnthsxx

franca70 · 15/10/2006 20:52

I gave up on toddlers groups long ago... I just stay there and smile...

fennel · 16/10/2006 10:34

besides the Xmas meet up idea, some of us have been meeting up in the week sometimes on a Friday daytime. or an occasional evening. it's always the same 3 of us so far however much we bump posts to entice others to join us.....

what about a toddler-friendly venue on a Friday morning? there's a new cafe/play zone being advertised, though I can't remember any details. it begings with D perhaps.

Baysmum · 16/10/2006 11:52

I think you might mean Dinkys off South St - havent been but its supposed to be OK, there is a free voucher in that magazine 'Little Times'. I'm up for any kind of human contact - again - let us kno and i'll make sure I check threads more often x

fennel · 16/10/2006 12:02

yes that's the one. We also have the free voucher from Little times .

h27 · 17/10/2006 09:36

Hi! I'm back ill deff be up for meeting some new people! How many of us can we get together for a meetup!! H27

Walnutshell · 17/10/2006 20:44

Oh, hi - esp H27 & Fennel (thanks), so sorry I didn't get back to you, manic week.

If you're still around, we're looking at relocating near Exeter. First choice would be East Devon - beautiful but expensive. Otherwise somewhere along the A38 (not literally) like Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Chudleigh... not entirely sure what these places are like in terms of schools, community etc. Want to escape from big city to small town if poss. Limited budget as losing one wage and moving south - are we mental??? x x x

Walnutshell · 17/10/2006 20:58

PS when we do move, I'll be hoping to meet-up and go to P&T so keep the ideas coming (bump bump!)

Walnutshell · 17/10/2006 21:30

Last try bump!

fennel · 17/10/2006 21:52

hi Walnutshell I am around.

I don't know those areas I'm afraid, I have been renting in St Thomas and recently bought a house in a village just on the edge of Exeter. It's beautiful here though.

we didn't find house prices very different to Manchester, yes they're extortionate here but you might find it's not any worse than where you're coming from.

am happy to meet up. am sort of waiting for Essbee to be around before suggesting anything specific as she's initiated other meet-ups but her ds is very ill at the moment.

franca70 · 17/10/2006 22:23

Walnutshell, I've only visited ashburton, and I think it's a lovely village. It's got some independent shops and a few delis (actually known as the foodie village of the south west). The area around it is fabolous. don't know much about house prices, but again, not more expensive than certain part of exeter. don't know about school either, but my impression is that it's quite popular with families, so schools shouldn't be a problem, at least primary, which on average i think are quite good around here.

GreenSepticStumps · 17/10/2006 22:30

I live in St Thomas

franca70 · 17/10/2006 22:36

is the fishnmonger really good as they say, the one in st thomas I mean (sorry, silly question, just trying to lose time instead of working)

fennel · 17/10/2006 22:49

I haven't gone very far Greenstumps. am still around St Thomas a fair bit....

don't know about any fishmonger though.

franca70 · 17/10/2006 23:09

fish works? can'r remember where it is exactly. mind you, I might be allucinating. I should go to bed...

Walnutshell · 18/10/2006 10:08

Thanks Fenn. I am open to many suggestions re where to live Devon-ways as will prob end up moving again within 3 years by which time we should have a good idea of our preferred location etc - oh, and a bit more cash to boot. Always helps. To start with need to be commuting distance to Exeter. (PS, Essbee & her ds: get well soon, hope they're OK.)

St Thomas area of Exeter I have heard of, but no idea what it is like... (Greenstump?) Are there any bits of Exeter To Be Avoided? I am currently in Nottingham area and there are definitely many parts of this City I would NOT live in so want to be well informed before we leap.

Franca - I think Ashburton is for me if foodie capital of the SW! Yum yum. But still keen to know more about Exeter and immediate surroundings.

Thanks Laydeez (I'm presuming) I know my posts are all QQQ at the mo x x x

Walnutshell · 18/10/2006 10:14

PS Franca - yes, good point about schools. DS is 1yo next week so a bit of time before that becomes of paramount importance, but would still like to get into vacinity of 'good school' if poss.
I've thought of another place - Teignmouth?

GreenSepticStumps · 18/10/2006 10:15

Oh yes the fishmonger is very good!!

fennel · 18/10/2006 10:30

Walnutshell we've recently been house and area hunting so we do know quite about about the areas, including schools, house prices, transport links etc, but we particularly looked in Exeter itself and up to about 5 miles around, not further out, as we commute in by bike.

I can tell you more about the areas if you CAT me. am a bit reluctant to give out too many details on a website. also the areas we ruled out might be where other mumsnetters live! for example we ruled out buying in one area because it has a failing secondary school at the moment, though we liked it in other ways (around the university). But if you are using private schools or would use the CofE secondary that wouldn't apply to you.

As Franca says there are many good primary schools in the area.

St Thomas is nice. in an urban sort of way. we liked living there, it's near the centre and the quays and the river, you can walk everywhere easily, it has lots of shops, a good swimming pool. but it is one of the more urban places you can live, and we were already coming from a city so we went for a village instead, but close enough still to walk and cycle in.

Walnutshell · 18/10/2006 10:52

Oops, I'm being single-minded about moving and I think that is coming across as insensitive. Apologies.

I will CAT you Fennel, very kind x x
