roll call for any Aussie mums in London who want to meet up?

Been here 7yrs now have 2 ds's 2yrs and 6months and am married to a pom so looks like I'm here for the long run! The closest I get to an aussie now is watching neighbours (I know its quite pathetic). Anyway if there are any others who fancy a catch up, I'm in west london?

HI, - I'm a saffa not an aussie - but an antipodean London mum as well and we have that in common at least! I hope you get some responses, seems the mumsnet is quite global but people take a while to get in touch. I started a Harrow thread for SA mums about 2 months ago and haven't had one single reply from a saffa yet. There are 500 000 in the london and herts area apparently, you would think someone would notice the thread! All good responses came from local mums who were replying for another reason. Try netmums and put a posting on their noticeboard, its more visible as it stays there for months and you will probably get more replies direct to you. I have been in touch with 4 people this way. Good luck. from a friendly saffa.

quokka · 08/08/2006 15:07

Thanks for your message I will try netmums . Also I have have just realised gumtree do a notice board for mums and dads so will give that a go also. I think there are loads of saffas and aussies but most of them are childless and travelling! Are you here permanently or just passing through? I had quite a few saffa friends in Sydney

Hi Quokka
I am a Kiwi Mum to be, and was just about to place a notice looking for others, however doesn't look like there are too many of us antipodeans around London with Kids!
My baby isn't due until Nov but am at home and dying of bordem.

Kaybee :-)

quokka · 10/08/2006 15:50

congrats kaybee How long have you been here and where abouts in london are you?

OP posts:
Kaybee7777 · 11/08/2006 14:02

I've been here for 4 years now. We're living in East London - South Woodford.
How about you?

quokka · 11/08/2006 15:31

Been here 7yrs have ds 2yrs and ds 6 months. We live in Gunnersbury West London. How many weeks are you? If your really bored we can always meet up and you can see what you'll be in for once the baby comes . What kind of birth are you planning for? If you have any embarrasing quiestions you need answered don't be shy.

OP posts:
Kaybee7777 · 11/08/2006 15:40

Don't really know what kind of birth I am planning, a pain free one would be good!
The whole birth part is freaking me out a bit to be honest. I don't really feel confortable with the midwifes I have seen, and the hospitals here are scary!
I'd love to meet up some time. My best friends back in NZ have kids and I really miss spending time with them and getting in some practice :-)

quokka · 11/08/2006 15:49

Well I had natural birth for both, I was in the water alot of the time for ds1. I was lucky that I didn't tear with either! Just think that women have been doing this for hundreds of thousands of years and thay coped!

How many weeks are you?

OP posts:
quokka · 11/08/2006 15:52

Forgot to say I'm not anti pain relief!

cori · 11/08/2006 21:29

Have been away for a few days. I see we havent found to many aussies, but a good idea to broaden it to an antipodean meetup.

Kaybee7777 · 12/08/2006 12:34

I am 26 weeks, so hopefully still have a while until the birth part. I will do some more reading and stuff and decide how I'd ideally like things to go...

quokka · 12/08/2006 13:28

Hi cori hope your hol was good . Are you off somewhere exotic now?

Kaybee do you drive, and are you working? Don't read too much as it gets a bit confusing. A friend gave me a lovely book called Birth and Beyond. It's huge but it has everything in it. I still use it to look things up like illnesses for the boys and for me!

Holiday was nice, found centerparcs to be a bit over rated though. We are hoping to go another holiday (DS passport should be back this week). We were going to book a last minute break, but am feeling a bit anxious about the whole thing now terrorist attack is imminent.

quokka · 13/08/2006 19:04

know what you mean. Just avoid travelling to the states maybe?

Hows your little one, are you out of the baby haze yet? Its so much different with number 2, I've enjoyed it so much more and ds2 is so much calmer and happy. Ds1 always manages to grab the limelight and then look at ds2 and he's just happy boucing and chilling out in his chair!

OP posts:
Kaybee7777 · 14/08/2006 12:45

I can drive, but am just waiting for my nz licence to be switched to a uk one, so i can get insurance on our car! Not working at the moment & unlikley to find any work before the baby is born...

quokka · 15/08/2006 20:09

Oh I remember that, I miss my old licence it had a nice photo! How long have you been here again?

OP posts:
Kaybee7777 · 15/08/2006 20:49

Four years, but I didn't ever bother changing licences as we only got a car fairly recently. However with a baby on the way i definately want to be able to get around without soley relying on public transport!

quokka · 15/08/2006 21:10

its pity your on the other side of London, but I'm sure we can organise something. Have you ever been to Kew gardens?

OP posts:
goldenoldie · 15/08/2006 22:15

My nanny is from Sidney and is keen to meet up with others. She is in N1. Anyone else in that part of London?

cori · 15/08/2006 22:20

Ds 2 is defiently a more difficult baby than DS 1. At the moment he cries when DH tries to do anything for him. Has been like this since we came back from centerparcs. It is frustrating for both of us.

quokka · 15/08/2006 22:27

Hi goldnenoldie, I'm in West London not too far away

OP posts:
quokka · 15/08/2006 22:30

what a shame, ds1 went through a stage of that I'm sure it'll get better . You still going away?

OP posts:
eidsvold · 16/08/2006 05:55

was in essex - 2000 - 2004 - met my pommy dh and told him no way I was staying there for ever and if he was serious about me he needed to consider that. We have been married almost 5 years, 2 dds and another baby on the way. Moved back to Aus 2004 and don't regret it for a second. So never say never - you might be able to persuade dh to move to Aus.

if I was still in the Uk would have been there with bells on. Bring out in the commuter belt means not a lot of aussies around.... I was a rarity.
