o.k. I'm bored at work so thought I'll start another threat trying to organise gettogethers :)

With or without kids... I'm game

The latest Ealing thread was considering a zoo visit of some sort when it gets a bit warmer... and now it's gone and gotten colder!

Haha non typical. I like it.
Actually met a friend of mine whos an NCT mum....My ds should be doing this, shouldn't have that and should be able to at least try and read. Poor sod is only 3 FFS!
Needles to say it wasn't a long meet up.....

pookey · 11/03/2006 14:18

Hello sorry I was being nosey and skimming this thread, but for those who are pg my contractions for ds started in old orleans in Ealing - don't know if it was the food that started them off!!!! Just thought I'd warn you Grin

MrsBigD · 11/03/2006 15:02

pookey... maybe you wanted to be come an Ealing mum? Grin

boopert... I usually respond to people telling me what MY kids should be able to do with 'every child is different, would be boring otherwise wouldn't it' Grin

Going by the tables ds should be uttering around 5 words at age 18... well he masters oh-oh and MAMA and very severe no head shaking with accompanying dark look Grin

YanksUponThames · 11/03/2006 17:02

Oooh, thank you!

Can I ask some dumb questions so I can hopefully gradually get less dumb?

So what's a "non-typical" vs. "typical" Ealing mum? And what does NCT mean exactly? For me, all sociological stereotyping and rude labeling are welcome (when it's all in fun, of course), including rude labels/decriptions for yanks etc. One needs to get an education in this sort of thing one way or another; please help me learn how to not talk like a dumb yank moron. In return I can offer a variety of rude ways to describe George Bush & co., f'r instance.

Or is there another thread for this somewhere?
"Real Life Lingo for Empty-headed Yank Expats" or something like that. And maybe Uwila can help, too, except I don't think she's empty-headed.

Can I swear? Grin
Especially if I replace a few letters with *'s here and there? (I would need to do that to refer to G.W. Bush...)

Boopert · 11/03/2006 17:11

Yanks, NCT is the National Childbirth Trust.
And the mummies that attend (in my experience!!!) are full of rubbish snotty ladies that think their child is better than the rest.
I personally am proud that my son is better than me. What more can a mummy want???!
(Sorry if there are any NICE NCT mums out there...)

YanksUponThames · 13/03/2006 00:08

Boopert -- Thanks so much! It's obviously something important to know...
(I didn't know, I was guessing maybe Non-Commercial Television, or maybe No Child Tainted, or No-Chin Tossers...I should've noticed from my copy of the London Baby Directory, but stupidly wasn't making the connection)

I looked them up and I think I can guess what you mean. Are we talking about this sort of thing (? and please forgive me if I miss the mark or insult anyone...):

"I never let xxx touch that" and
"Of course my (10 month old baby) child is already taking violin and formal dance and impressionist painting lessons and is already signed up for (some absurdly expensive/exclusive/snotty/potty institution)!!",
and insanely expensive, painstakingly handcrafted, politically correct, organically grown, non-allergenic equipment and "developmental" "toys" that the children will use for about 6 weeks?

Just wondering. If so, then I definitely agree with you. But then, if they weren't all different, it'd be boring, wouldn't it? Smile
One person's Absolutely Essential is another person's Completely Mental.

But I have to admit that people who smugly insist that there's Only One Right Way to do anything make me want to smack them.

Uwila · 13/03/2006 08:18

Hi everyone.

So, what are we doing then... shall we bump this meet into April so MrsBigD can join us, and when it just MIGHT be warm enough that you won't have to listen to me winge about the cold.

Hiya Yank, welcome to the Ealing thread.

Boopert · 13/03/2006 10:50

PMSL Yanks....
You've jit the nail right on the head....
Must admit, forgot it was my frineds sons party y'day. The thought of a room full of NCT mummies didn't inspire me....
Only when dh pointed out we'd forgotten it i felt awful. Oh well, never mind. Over it now....

April is good for me too. Whenever. Free at all times. Except 28th April. My birthday. Gonna be 28 again i think.

YanksUponThames · 13/03/2006 20:57

Boopert -- Thanks again for sorting me out, I appreciate it a lot! Also glad I guessed right enough and didn't (hopefully) end up torqueing anyone unduly.

(have to admit that the prospect of facing a room full of NCT mummies wouldn't make me eager to rush off to it either)

I will be out of town 25 Mar - 3 Apr, and one other April weekend (not Easter) we will probably go up to York to take ds to the rail museum, but otherwise I'm around and have a schedule usually more flexible than not.
Also, our Easter weekend isn't blocked off, since all our relatives/grandmas/etc are back in the states -- and at the same time, we haven't made plans to go anywhere in particular, either, since I reckon all the tourist/holiday/days-out destinations etc. will be completely crazy anyway. So if anyone else is looking for a low-key, non-grandma-laden Easter weekend meet-up, let me know....

YanksUponThames · 13/03/2006 21:16

Hi again Uwila!
whoops, sorry I forgot to thank you earlier. Anything (legal and portable) you'd like from
the US? Sorry I can't take you \link{http://www.angusbarn.com/\here}, but I might try and go if I can get any mates interested.

Also wanted to mention in passing that there are plenty of NCT-style mums in the States, too, most especially in the endless seas of yuppie suburbs.....where I happen to have been living, year after year....west London makes for a nice change of pace. Except for the never-seeing-the-sun thing. And wtf might I get some plain grape (not blackcurrant) jelly/jam? Our little local Tescos/Waitroses/Sainsburys round here don't, but I'm gonna get myself to a properly big store (like the Syon Lane/Osterley Tesco?) and see what they have.

MrsBigD · 14/03/2006 09:52

sorry for being so quiet the last few days... whole family came down with nasty stomach bug... and now dd has chickenpox!
April is fine for me

OP posts:
Uwila · 14/03/2006 09:54

Right, the whole month? Or shall we pick a more specific day? Wink

Boopert · 14/03/2006 10:20

Ohhh sorry to hear that MrsB. Still waiting for ds to catch it. But my prob is dh hasn't had it....Tricky.

Yanks, no problem. And sorry if i insulted anyone out there......Blush
Also, have you looked on the internet for grape jam? Must admit, not something i've heard of....

Uwila · 14/03/2006 10:35

Uwila · 14/03/2006 10:38

Ooooooo they have Nilla Wafers too. I haven't had those in ages!

Too bad it's all so bloody expensive. £4.55 for a box of Kraft Macaroni and cheese.

Nanou1 · 14/03/2006 11:06

boy! so much catching up to do! sorry still no pc at home and am catching up from brittany whilst on hols! so.... how are all the Mrs then?! would have been nice to meet with you but shall just be back from hols with guests arriving the following day so will have to leave it til 3 apr if that date is still going. on the nct note... thought i was the only one out there who did not belong to the club Wink. re steak... one of the thing i always look forward to when coming home is the good old steak! perfectly cooked with lovely french mustard and fries. yum yum! see you all soon and will be nice to catch up soon.

Uwila · 14/03/2006 11:34

Oh good, so nanou1, are you coming out with us if we make it after the 3rd?

How about April 6th? Does that work for everyone?

I thinkI might need a holiday in Brittany this summer for some nice steak.

MrsBigD · 14/03/2006 12:28

Have family visiting from 3 April - 19 April, so any respite from that by meeting up with you lovely ladies... Grin

so 6th is fine for me. Well actually the whole month is LOL well that depends how my little side business pans out but I'll always find some time to catch up

where are you guys meeting? will try to come along if you will have me!

By the way are any of you members of Ealing135? I think it is a great group and the mums are on the whole lovely, so check it out. Of course part of the reason I am saying this is because I am now a rep/volunteer for them, so I would say that! www.ealing135.org.uk

trying2bgood · 14/03/2006 13:57

yank - am an acton mum which basically means the opposite to a yummy mummy! ANd in my experience acton mums swear far more than ealing mums but we are in the neglected part of ealing borough!!

MrsBigD · 14/03/2006 14:09
