Hi, I’ve not tried Keto before so any advice welcome.

Anyone else just starting out, we could support each other.

Hamsterarse, that graph was my experience spot on.

Fast day today. Should be fine, got a bit of himalayan pink salt. So touch wood a bit of autophagy will kick in and ill stop ageing 😑

OuzoWoozo · 15/07/2020 14:17

With the fasting, what does that include and how often should it be done? Should you be on the plan for a bit before you introduce fasting? If you exercise, how does that work around fasting?

hamstersarse · 15/07/2020 19:21

I wouldn’t force yourself to fast, that’s my experience.

When your body is in fat burning mode...it just happens! You’ll wake up in the morning and not be hungry. You’ll find yourself just naturally going longer between any hunger pangs (I rarely actually get hunger pangs at all any more )

Keto resets your hunger hormones, so don’t put too much on yourself in the first period, just get used to eating 20g of carbs, until your body starts to settle down. Fasting will come automatically

hamstersarse · 15/07/2020 19:23

On the exercise....I can do 3/4 hour bike rides fasted. BUT I now have a slice of toast before I go just to get me up those hills a bit easier....your energy is much more slow burning when you are using fat and it means you don’t have as much power. But wow, you have endurance! You can keep going forever!!

OuzoWoozo · 15/07/2020 21:53

That's interesting as I have recently taken up road cycling as a hobby and that does mean being out for a few hours. I was worried that this would affect the stamina.

hamstersarse · 16/07/2020 07:25

You have endurance when fat adapted, no more hitting the wall, but there is no doubt your power is reduced without the fast acting carbs.

But at your stage of keto, exercise is a great way to get your body using fat really efficiently, then once you are in the swing of it you can use targeted carbs before a ride.

Team Sky do most of their winter training on low carb / fat burning to increase endurance and fuel efficiency. But for the races themselves have carbs to fire up their muscles quickly

I reckon 4 weeks of keto before a fast would prepare you.

I usen't to be able a 24 hour fast without feeling like death and ive just finished a 36 hour fast. Felt hungry between 5 and 7 but not unbearably so.

Broke fast this morning with a bit of mackerel! A food i wouldnt have touched 8 weeks ago!

Today i will really savour the luxury of a bit of almond milk in my coffee!

JustMoved123 · 16/07/2020 09:42

Hi, how’s everyone today? You’re doing well on the fasting @KetoWinnie. I try and do 16:8 most days but I’m not sure I’d be happy going a whole day although you do get through the hunger, I just feel a bit weak.

OP posts:
daisychicken · 16/07/2020 10:43

Hi all, still koko amd still static - 3 weeks and counting. Hopefully next week will show a drop!

I do 16:8 most days and most days I find I barely feel hungry when it reaches the time to break my fast. But, I do have odd days where I wake up hungry or I feel very hungry mid morning, I just allow myself to break my fast earlier and not worry about it. I haven't been able to tie those odd days to a day of perhaps eating less fats so maybe it is an accumulative few days of perhaps not enough fat?

Turkeydrumstick · 16/07/2020 10:52

Morning @JustMoved123 I’m the same as you, I’m in awe of those that can fast but I just can’t handle it, I go cold, weak and grumpy! 16:8 sounds good though I might give that a go.

Im wearing a pair of jeans today that used to be really snug- they now fit perfectly! I’m strutting round the house feeling like a model! Still quite a chunky one but baby steps Grin

JustMoved123 · 16/07/2020 13:32

@Turkeydrumstick enjoy strutting, it’s a lovely feeling to get back into clothes you like! I’ve never felt good about my weight but have now taken to looking at photos and checking on mfp what my weight was then! Probably about another 7kg to lose as an intermediate goal. I still have all the clothes 🤦‍♀️

I'm on day 4 now and this is the least energy I've had. I cracked this morning and weighed myself and I've lost 3 pounds so that's made me happy to push through and carry on. I no longer feel sick but I think that's because I'm eating less cheese. I'm starting to enjoy the food more now and feel less like a vast of fat.
@Turkeydrumstick that's very exciting about your jeans! It's the stuff dreams are made of!

ladyflower23 · 16/07/2020 15:44

I meant vat of fat but vast of fat would also be an accurate description Grin

JustMoved123 · 16/07/2020 16:41

@ladyflower23 I felt rubbish around day 4 too, maybe it’s when it starts to kick in? Not that the weight is falling off me now but I know weekends are to blame!

OP posts:
KetoIFWinnie · 16/07/2020 17:17

By day 5 you will not feel tired or sick at all. You are so nearly there ladyflower.

I dreamt of cake when i fell asleep on day 4!!

It must be a shock for the body for sure!

KetoIFWinnie · 16/07/2020 17:20

If i get under 9 atone i will be kicking myself for one marie kondo clearout too many.

pontiouspilates · 16/07/2020 19:25

I'm 2 1/2 weeks in now and Ive realised that I'm no longer hungry or craving snacks like I used to. It's made everything much easier, as with every other diet I've been on, I've had real cravings for 'naughty' things and in a constant state of temptation. Long may this last!

KetoIFWinnie · 16/07/2020 20:17

Same, i am so nicely full after my tesco finest cerified angus steak beef burger (i typed all that in to myfitnesspal as well) and cucumber and tomato and tesco caesar sauce. Then i had an egg with 25g of grated cheese!

I count calories as well, or keep an eye on them, and i got to 1400 today. Its normally a bit less.

But the day after a fast im good to mysel!

MattBerrysHair · 17/07/2020 08:04

I'm two weeks in now and I'm really tired. The first week was amazing, I had so much energy and no brain fog but now I need a nap every afternoon and still sleep through the night. I've got a blood test next week to test my iron levels as I've had anaemia in the past. That also occurred after going low carb and cutting out dairy due to intolerances and eczema. I find it odd as I eat plenty of green veg and red meat, as well as nuts and seeds and a multivitamin with iron. As dairy is not an option for fat I'm putting coconut oil in my coffee and having olive oil on all salad and veg. I really shouldn't be deficient in anything! On the plus side I've lost half a stone and can fit into my size 10 jeans again.

KetoIFWinnie · 17/07/2020 17:05

@hamstersarse i know you have been at this for a few years, my knee is in agony. Im limping. Bit of googling and up comes keto IF and gout. I never thought id get gout 🤔

So im off meat and fish for 48 hours. Cant do keto but will do low carb not counting net carbs though. 😥

This is just a detour. Im not ditching keto. When my knee stops hurting i'll reassess.

No sugar, bread, pasta, rice, spuds still though so i dont expect to put on weight.

KetoIFWinnie · 17/07/2020 17:09

I meant to ask if that ever happened to you.

hamstersarse · 18/07/2020 08:05

@KetoWinnie

I’ve never had gout.
I think there is a short term risk which reduces as your body gets used to being in ketosis.
Dr Stephen Phinney is really good

Hello everyone! I need to lose weight and low carb is the way forward for me too! Smile

JustMoved123 · 19/07/2020 04:04

Welcome @chocpott, how much do you want to lose? I’m working on 10kgs to start but in reality 20kg loss is required.

Good morning all!
I hope my talk about Gout didn't scare anybody out of trying keto. It was such a brief flare up. 12 hours of pain, if that. I don't know what I've been doing the last three days, especially yesterday, I was in a restaurant yesterday .

Anyway, somehow I lost another pound or two. Shocked and delighted, and back on board for another week of keto now!
