Hello! Day One Done - anyone want to join me?

SharkSkinThing · 29/09/2015 20:43

Just wanted to say hello and see if any other new starters wanted to buddy up for support and advice?

I've got 3 - 4 stone to lose, all gained AFTER having my DS who is now - god help me - 5. All down to long-term sleep deprivation and sugar reliance, and forming terrible habits. And wine to help me cope with the sleep deprivation,

Anyway, hoping to finally turn things around now that he's finally sleeping (sometimes until 5.30am!). Would love to chat to others who are finding that this WOE works for them.

xx

Fab Devon! I fear we are no longer weight twins;) hope dds feeling better, poor thing.
Sunday went badly, didn't eat all day then giant plate of roast beef with all the carby trimmings, dinner out the night before included gnocchi & alcohol but the rest was not too bad. Out for lunch today but at least I can select from the menu.
Hi idareyou, hope you're doing ok so far.
Stay strong & keep focused all, at least stronger & more focused than me!

SharkSkinThing · 19/10/2015 08:35

Morning, gang. Wishing you lots of success this week.

One off for me today, which is super, considering that I drank like a monkey last week!

Hi all! Well done on all these losses - great stuff.

Did is better today, thank you for all your kind words.

Be back tomorrow with more but tired after the weekend today and tiring to get the children into bed early!!

SharkSkinThing · 19/10/2015 18:12

How was the dentist Devon? How is your DD?

OP posts:
idareyou · 20/10/2015 19:33

Hi all. Hope your dd is feeling loads better Devon.

Day two today and going ok except I am not drinking enough water. My ds has been an absolute toad since I picked him up from school and if I hadn't sworn off alcohol during the week and it only being day two and all I would have had several by now. But as it is its coke zero (yes I know, little steps, little steps).

Does anyone else have the low carb gourmet cookbook. Made the Korean style beef and spinach soup for lunch. Yumster!

Hope everyone else getting on ok.

SharkSkinThing · 20/10/2015 20:16

Hang on in there, dare, as you say, baby steps. Sorry your DS being a mare - how old is he? My DS is 5, and can be very challenging (I fully blame him for my weight gain due to the little bugger not sleeping for 5 years, and he still wakes at 5am).

Kids! Have this for now: Wine

I don't have the book you mentioned but often look loads of stuff up on-line as I eat fish but not meat. I might look up some soups with tofu! Grin

He'll be five in a month. Just started school and think it is exhaustion and over excitement. Complete daddy's boy and if he doesn't get what he wants he goes on and on and on and just ends up losing treats etc. Roll on half term I say!

I will have a look in the cookbook for tofu recipes - I'm sure I saw some!

Wow, idea, are you sure you haven't kidnaped my 5yo...sounds very familiar!

I did an aubergine/tomato and tofu curry the other day. A bit sloppy without the rice, but it was still delicious!

How is everyone else doing this week?

Hi all! Back in the saddle now! Daughter soooo much better and we have all slept, so bonus all round!

Had 'date' night last night.....prosecco was drunk. Dp was v. Complimentary about the whole weight loss thing, I was pleased with that!

I hear you on the not enough water idare I get quite thirsty, but also seem to be a touch - ahem - constipated?? Anyone else?? Is it all the flipping eggs??!

How are you ready? How was your lunch out?

My children are driving me bonkers too (totally standard in this house) I am so over picking things up off the floor - arrrrr!!!

My smallest boy is 1 today! How sweet. Very low key birthday, we will have a cake (no grains....) later on, we have given him a waterproof all in one for his birthday and his sisters are desperate to play in the leaves in our garden with him. So that is fun sorted!

Hope everyone is well

readyforsunshine · 21/10/2015 14:00

hi all, weekly weigh in predictably not great, no loss but no gain so onwards & upwards. lunch was delicious thanks Devon but unfortunately a badly worded menu. I ordered sea bass in a seafood broth, it was sea bass with a rich creamy sauce served with crushed new potatoes. of course I ate it Hmm
I fondly remember the 'troubles' when mine were little! I have a 14 year old son pushing my buttons & he's up until I go to bed these days so there's little escape!
happy bday Devonshire ds x

SharkSkinThing · 21/10/2015 20:27

Hi devon, glad all is well - and happy birthday to your DS. Aww... Cake

Constipation! I'm drinking about 2.5l of water a day, but I def don't poo anywhere near as much as before I started this diet (sorry if that's TMI). I don't feel constipated though. Are you in any discomfort? More water? More prosecco?!

And hello ready. That meal sounds yummingtons, and I would have eaten the lot too. Going out for lunch is for enjoying!

All is well here, but I am (what a flippin' surprise!), desperate for my Saturday night dinner and drinks with friends. I'm cooking a big Indian feast, including a veggie kedgeree for those of us who don't meat. It'll be deliciously high in carbs, but hey, the rice will be brown, so no big deal.

Anyone else got any weekend plans? xxx

OP posts:
readyforsunshine · 22/10/2015 07:30

Morning! Half term here & got a house full of teenagers already! That means endless croissants & rounds of toast, pasta & pizza to negotiate, oh lord wish me luck! My nieces bday party this afternoon, always feels mean not having cake but I don't even like bought cakeConfused
Your Indian feast sounds great shark, we are going to stay with friends up north for the weekend. There will be eating & drinking which is lovely but I just keep getting derailed & I really need to be quite strict if I'm going to lose. I think my strategy will have to be damage limitation. I have now been given the green light health wise to get back to exercising & you've reminded me I'm not drinking as much water as I should, I'm usually better at that. I may try to restrict myself to green smoothie bfast, soup lunch then as carb free a supper as I can fit into life & as little alcohol as I can manage without being anti social.

SharkSkinThing · 22/10/2015 08:23

Sounds like a a great plan, devon, and good luck with all of those carby tempations around!

Glad to hear you are feeling better. And you can do this, you know you can! What sort of exercise can you now introduce? It def helps to keep me on the straight and narrow!

I had a sneaky mid-week weight (I shouldn't, but it motivates me, weirdly, I could have hapily hit the wine last night), and it looks like a good one. I'm out tonight seeing Suffragette, and driving, so that means I just need to get through tomorrow....then start drinking at 10am Saturday! Grin

devoncreamtea · 22/10/2015 11:52

Hi all!

ready - that is a lot of temptation!! Stay strong! I made a paleo bday cake for my Son yesterday as I really wanted to eat it....selfish?!!

shark I weigh everyday...!!!! It helps me to stay motivated. Still haven't made below 10 st!! Have been stuck on 10.06, 10.02 etc etc for days!! I get quite excited in the morning now, just to see if it has dropped below (I expect that will wear off soon!)

So do most people drink once a week? I do, but I think I will try to not for a bit to see if it makes a difference. I have had a look on the bootcamp page, so glad I am not doing that! I think if I approach it like I can eat anything I like, but I WANT to avoid startchy carbs - somehow it is easier than feeling I can't have anything. A few times a day I get a bit stressed out or something (kid related...) and I think 'oh I just want 5 minutes piece with a cup of tea and some toast' - and then I think 'well if I want to then I can - do I really want to?' And I always feel that I don't.

Has anyone looked at the website called 'Mark's daily apple' ? It is really good - all about 'primal eating' (basically low carb), lots of tips and recipes and suggestions for snacks if you are craving. I like it. It also goes into stuff about how saturated fats are good for you, but grains are not so good for you - and all the reasons why. I still find it a bit weird to eat lots of butter and cream...but I reckon I can handle it!!

I will up my water intake and see if I can improve the - err - backlog.... although I don't feel bloated or anything, just aware that my habits are different.

Have a good day all!

Thefitfatty · 22/10/2015 12:02

Hey everyone. Thinking of doing the low carb thing. I do a lot of weight lifting, and while I'm generally pretty happy with my body, I want to see more results from my lifting, and all the body building sites recommend low carb.

I'm not too worried about it, as I'm not a huge carb person, but, can I really not have tomatoes, onions and goat cheese?

devoncreamtea · 22/10/2015 17:12

Cripes fitfatty I hope that is not true! Maybe it is if you are doing a boot camp style low carb..?

I like the paleo approach as it emphasises quality foods rather than just any old thing as long as it is not carby.

Have you watched the cereal killers film? I think it is online, it is about high fat vs low fat and is really good and informative. It might appeal to you as you weight lift - I think it is aimed more at athletes.

I like low carb, it is good and I feel well in general although I still sometimes get a bit hungry. Let us know how you are getting on!

readyforsunshine · 23/10/2015 08:14

Shark I'm a daily weigher too but I take the weds weight as my ' record'.
I do v lightweight, girly running, swimming or riding a couple of times a week & hi intensity Pilates most days, but have done hardly any of this since spring & it's made a huge difference to tone, shape & strength.
I had forgotten about marks daily Apple, I used to look at that, thanks Devon. I'm def not following anything too strict, just cutting the obv White carbs, still having some carby veg & still too much alcohol which is obviously hindering my losses. I'm also trying to focus on ' healthy' prob similar diet to Devon, I know I need to get back in the zone to get more ' clean' & I know I will, the exercise will help that. For now I'm just glad to be feeling well again! Such a cliche but its really made me realise how much we take our health for granted & ive only had a horrendous virus!
For anyone still feeling that weird ' want something else ideally sweet but not strictly hungry' feeling, I picked up this tip from Sarah Wilsons book, a teaspoonful of coconut oil, works for me! Unfortunately up until a couple of weeks ago I was satisfying the desire with biscuits!
Welcome fitfatty, just give it a go & see if you get some results Smile

devoncreamtea · 23/10/2015 13:04

Thanks ready I will try coconut oil! Confession time for me: I ate toast and marmalade.

I don't even know why I did it, I had another crappy night with my small teething boy and my dp is working all the time atm, I felt a bit down in the dumps - especially as he has invited some people I don't really know very well to stay this weekend, not for a visit per se but to use our place as a crash pad while they visit other people...!! Not sure why he did this - he is very amenable by nature, but fails to see that while he is chatting away to a captive audience, I am organising food and entertaining kids (they have kids too) and making beds.....then at the end of the weekend he will say 'oh that was nice Devon, we should see more people' oh god. Anyway, have self scuppered. Not going to dwell....

On the weight front still trapped at 10 stone!!!! Just go below 10 scales - for the love of God!!!! Need to do actual excercise. It will have to be home based though - so you tube I guess. I once did that 30 day shred thing, the woman was a touch scary, but it was quite effective. Any other suggestions?

SharkSkinThing · 23/10/2015 20:03

Cut yourself some slack, devon. You've had a rotten week and sleep deprivation is utterly brutal. The reason I put all of my weight on is die to 5 years of broken nights and very early mornings. You are exhausted and have no will power and your body just wants easy fuel (like sugar).

So don't worry about it, it's all about going slowly!

That scenario (friends staying, you do all the work, feel knackered) is very familiar! Maybe next time suggest they get a take-away and help with the beds! Easier said than done, though...

Exercise I think helps. I used to like Nell Mcandrew dvd's - they are just cardio, but very basic, so you can make them as hard or as easy as you want depending on how you feel. But that kind of thing might not be what you like!

Right - I have to go! DS has finally dropped off and I have a ton of stuff to read for my course and wine is calling (and I'm not listening). I'm going to weigh tomorrow (in fact I think I'll think I'll move my weigh day to a Saturday so I can drink one evening a week!).

ready, hope you are well, sorry not caught up with you properly!

BTW - anyone seen Suffragette yet? Saw it last night - wow. Powerful film.

Thank you shark!

What's your course?

Love the weighing/wine plan: excellent logistics!

I am waiting for aforementioned guests....!!!

Hope everyone has a good weekend x

Thefitfatty · 25/10/2015 04:58

Ok, today (day 1), I'm having:

4 medium eggs scrambled some full fat milk and butter, with chilli flakes and a bit of goats cheese

1 baby bel cheese before my 1 hour 45 minute work out

Lunch is great, I'm going grocery shopping after work so I'm stuck with what I could get from the little store by my sons school:

tablouleh (a salad with parsely, onions, tomatoes, lemon juice, burghol (very, very little) and olive oil)
and a chicken sausage roll that I have painstakingly taken all of the roll off of, so just chicken sausage.

Dinner will be baked chicken legs (2 or 3 depending on size) with skin on and sauteed kale with garlic (loads).

Drinks: Coffee with sugar and full fat milk (I will not give up sugar in my coffee).

Water.

Possibly a Diet Coke later.

Please critique. :)

Thefitfatty · 25/10/2015 04:58

Sorry, that should be Lunch isn't great. Not lunch is great. :P

SharkSkinThing · 25/10/2015 09:31

All sounds great, fit - I think we all have small things we don't want to quite let go of (wine, for me!), but I reckon overall the changes we are making are big enough to make a difference! Well done!!! I love kale, and your comment about taking off the pastry made me laugh! The things we do.

Plus, that amount of exercise will give you some wiggle room!

A whopping 4 pounds off for me this week (yes, devon, a Sat weigh in is def the way to go!), making a total of 13. I'm thrilled.

I'm doing an MA in Gender Studies, devon, and loving it. I'm doing it part time over 2 years (in my second year now) to fit around work and family, so it's tough, but with it! By day I work in university administration, but at night I fight the patriarchy!

Next week has no issues asides from a family lunch on Sunday, and I'm cooking, so I'll make sure it's low carb friendly, and I won't drink. I can only make one spin class next week so I need to get a fix elsewhere!

Anyone got any good seafood recipes?

Catch up soon; we're off for a walk along the beach now. xxx
