paleo for weightloss

yumyumpoppycat · 18/06/2014 15:28

Was sorting out some books to take back to the library and found Chris Kresser's your personal paleo Diet. It pretty much fell open on the weight loss page - seemed to be a sign! Soooo enough messing around and procrastination, on the wagon off the wagon, I just need to get my head down and just plow on and lose weight....

Is anyone up for doing paleo or a similar diet with a focus on weightloss?

These are the additional rules, or I guess a good starting point before adding in usual paleo 'rules' :
Eat more protein
Don't snack
Go dairy free
Reduce calorie density by eating more veg
Eat all food within an 8 hour window

and one more for me - in bed by 11.

Will update but be great if others join in!

Flowers I hope you get more sleep tonight.

I wonder if fruit smoothies might satiate my ds for a few minutes, Hmm he seems to have become a bottomless pit with a piranha mouth. Shock

The book sounds ideal for dd, though a JCB might be more appropriate. Grin
Which thread was it on? I could do with a tip or two, too.
I just realised if I brought and dealt with some all of the boxes still in the loft unopened from our last house move (almost 10 yrs ago), I might even go back to the weight I was all those years ago! Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 24/09/2014 11:30

Thanks favadi Flowers only 1 dd had a nightime snuggle so 50 % better Grin

Have a vision of you on a bulldozer with a hard hat on Grin

Here is a link to the thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/good_housekeeping/2178442-The-Life-Changing-Magic-of-Tidying-Marie-Kondo? The book doesn't really have tips, it is all a bit mad and involves a 6 month session of holding all possessions in your house a category at a time and unless they spark joy throwing them away. Typically she thinks we could get rid of at least 30 % of our belongings in one swoop and doing so will be life transforming. Problem is I don't think I would have many clothes left if I do this!

Our house is looking extra tippy precisely because we have had to clear out the loft for an extension. I have a tub of size 8-10 clothes to go through, unfortunately most of it is hand me downs from my younger sis so I can't just keep the stuff I love for if I lose weight and pop the rest in one of those clothes aid bags. (There is a section in the book that covers this exact issue of sisterly hand me downs funnily enough!)

Grin I read a bit her book on amazon last night and a couple of things made me smile, giggle. I've always had a few working/short term memory issues, for which the best solution is to be very organised (a draw, cupboard for everything), which never stopped me being a hoarder. I could actually throw boxes already labelled! Grin
Every time I clear the loft, I end regretting it. The clothes I could be wearing, had I not donate them to charity! Shoes, I just can't part with, they are my precious. Grin
The problems around my house is that, one careless day, I allowed young people in my kitchen. Shock It drives me mad to hunt for where ds has put stuff and I give up on any sense of order when dd comes home. We have a magic fairy that make every household item disappear so regularly I have to rebuy things before they misteriously reappear; I think I have 3 potato peelers, 4 tin openers in my drawer! Grin

Don't feel guilty about keeping any of your sister clothes (unless there is something you really like); after the hard work you would have put in losing the weight, you will be wanting to go shopping. Wink
Keeping the bigger clothes can be counterproductive: instead of acting as a 'just in case', it can lead to make you think of a 'potential failure'; instead of being a memory of whather lovely activity, it can remind you negatively of when you where bigger. I kept the trousers that prompted me to do something about my weight 4 1/2 year ago but nothing else. :)

yumyumpoppycat · 26/09/2014 15:02

Favadi Grin if you love your clothes then they bring you joy and your organised too so you don't need the book!

My problem is that I really am not that great at putting things back I am lazy

Bit cheaty today I made these,food52.com/recipes/12469-gluten-free-coconut-raisin-scones I used homemade coconut milk and flour and replaced sugar with honey so they fell apart but were so nice warm from the oven and then with natural yog!

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 27/09/2014 09:48

It makes very little difference to the house, if there is only one person puttting things back. Grin Ds's room needs a Danger! (Do not enter if you are of weak disposition!) sign on his bedroom door. Grin

The scones look really yummy. Substituting the sugar can be tricky and I am still looking for extra solutions. I bought sweet cicely (the original sweetner in marshmallow) seeds, this year but I haven't got round to plant them -or the marshmallow seeds- yet.

Is your cold better gone now?

yumyumpoppycat · 27/09/2014 13:01

Luckily my 9 yo son is pretty neat at the moment - dreading the stinky teenage boy stage though! The girls bedroom - hmm lets just say they take after their mother and then some Grin

Love the idea of marshmallow seeds will have to google!
Well the coconut aided digestion as discussed in another thread (but not to a worrying extent Grin ) and as a result I am more than a lb lighter now than before I got the cold. Woohoo! Going to friends for dinner this evening so unfortunately the loss might not stick.

Cold 98% better now thanks but I should prob ditch dairy again tomorrow to get rid of the rather pleasant ahem phlegm effect that is lingering.

Doing more baking (can't help myself) trying chocolate cupcakes I have just thrown random things in a blender and added a banana which I regret because the effect is quite banana-ey so dd prob wont have it. I am hoping to make avocado chocolate frosting as I have been desp to do something with avocado since reading your cheesecake recipe.

Have lovely weekend Smile

Oh and apparently coconut sugar is really similar to granulated sugar but good for blood sugar, I can't find the pages I was reading yesterday but some info here coconutpalmsugar.com/Health_Attributes.html I think the cost might be prohibitive though Sad

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 29/09/2014 11:47

Did you have a lovely evening with your friends?

Avocado and chocolate are really nice together, I love it with a little orange juice in it too for a Terry's experience. :)

I'm back on the 2 weeks on of the scarsedale, so I'm keeping well away from baking, but I'm enjoying the cooking Wink. Yesterday, for my last off breakfast, I cooked lamb's liver and kidneys in grapefruit juice and chives and a spot of oil

yumyumpoppycat · 29/09/2014 14:03

Weekend dinner was lovely thanks - not terribly low carb or paleo but not a disaster and there were delicious baked halloumi, prawns and chorizo for nibbles - I just skipped the crackers. How was yours?

Love it that livers and grapefruit juice is a delicious meal to you - I would give myself serious kudos if I ate that but I guess I can't knock it till I've tried it! Actually as my treat breakfast I had sausage and egg (snore) it felt a bit unhealthy tbh so I think I had one too many sausages (although high meat and gluten free of course Grin) .

Feeling stressed out by loft extension building work so coffee and dark chocolate very much back on the menu, I just need to not give in to the idea of toast for breakfast while it is going on for the next 3 months!

Well done returning to scarsdale on time!

yumyumpoppycat · 29/09/2014 14:05

Oh and frosting was amazingly chocolaty glossy and went down well with the girls (unlike the banana cake!)

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 29/09/2014 15:37

The weekend was lovely. I've started on the autumn clearing in the garden and enjoyed the last of the sun. :)
The liver is really a treat for dh and I, as both children hate it (and ds doesn't like the smell either), it becomes a romantic meal for two. :)

Hurray for glossy frosting!:) Did they even notice the avocado? Do you have a next bake-adventure in mind? I remember making a lovely carrot and walnut cake (ringing the juice through a tea towel). I think I used the almond sponge/muffin mix and a bit of grated orange zest (possibly a pinch of cinnamon) if only I would remember to write recipes down

yumyumpoppycat · 08/10/2014 16:11

Hi Favadi [waves]

How are you? I am spending all my internet time looking up house stuff on the internet so haven't posted sorry. Just seen how amazingly you are doing on the other thread so I might have to try out the favadiscarsdale diet!! I haven't majorly fallen off the wagon but have gained a bit back so need to get back on it so I can buy a nice dress for the family wedding in dec.

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 08/10/2014 21:02

[waves] I'm so pleased to hear you're busy with loft conversion and not buried in cookie dough! Grin

I think there has been a major mutiny aboard the other thread but you are most welcome to join (doubly motivated for both of us). I really enjoyed my no sugar sweet chilli fish today, I'll post the recipe in the morning. :)

CharlieSierra · 15/10/2014 15:51

Hello again, I haven't posted for a while since going on holiday, but other than whilst away I have stuck to the plan. I gained a few lbs on holiday and hadn't really lost that much by just eating paleo/primal so I've joined the low carb bootcamp thread to see if being much stricter on carbs kicks my loss off again - not using any ingredients which don't fit with primal though. It's quite hard without any fruit, nuts or carby veg and I'm still scared of fat but I've lost 7.7lbs in two weeks - although most of that is probably water.

It sounds like you are going well!

FavadiCacao · 16/10/2014 10:39

Welcome back and well done on weight loss. Grin

Scared of fat...it's by far the most difficult concept to get round after all the drumming in. It's seems daunting to add it, when we are not used to (or react to some): my default is olive oil, coconut cream and coconut oil.

I also used butter and cream everywhere, before realising I reacted to them (less so to butter). I thought it was the cheese stalling me but I'm still eating blocks and losing weight. I took away all the foods on the FODMAP before I realised it was the cream, yogurt and butter. Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 16/10/2014 18:12

Well done Charlie!

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 17/10/2014 18:42

Charlie, you got me looking at a bootcamp thread since the first one! Shock nothing wrong with bootcamp, just not good for me
How are you doing, today? [Step away from the scales on week 3 and 4 (just here if you can't step away).] :)

CharlieSierra · 17/10/2014 19:42

Hi Favadi, yes it seems those weeks can be tough. I thought I'd give it a go because committing to a weekly weigh in works for me, helps me to focus and I was stuck at the same weight. I'd go to a group if the diets weren't so bad, but I've tried it before and I just can't ignore all the crap they are telling people. I'm missing my fruit at the moment but I might try making my chia pudding with almond milk instead of coconut and having a few blueberries.

Why have you gone on Scarsdale, were you stuck?

FavadiCacao · 17/10/2014 20:21

Why have you gone on Scarsdale, were you stuck?
Oh...Yeah! I got Stuck...Again...eventually I just get stuck, whether mentally or weightloss...I refuse to think there is nothing I can do about it. :)
Being accountable to yourself or other is a great motivator (often a difficult one to achieve at 'home') regardless of the plan one chooses.

The Scarsdale choice was about conquering my next level into loving food and loving cooking food but not being 'dominireed' (the right word escapes me) by food. Don't take me wrong I like having a 'menu', 'rules'...they will eventually fit! Grin

CharlieSierra · 18/10/2014 21:00

I made theclothesmakethegirl.com/2014/03/27/gyoza-meatballs/ tonight, they are bloody lovely.

Venticoffeecup · 31/10/2014 22:27

Hello,

I'm new to Paleo/Primal. Please can I join your gang?

I have approx 40 pounds that I need to loose. I'm hoping Paleo is going to be my thing.

I was wondering how those of you with little children cope with going Paleo. What do you feed your DC?

yumyumpoppycat · 02/11/2014 17:14

Hi Venti of course you can join great to have someone new - sorry its a bit quiet on here! How is weight loss going so far?

With children its probably easiest to quietly reduce the non paleo foods rather than cut them out entirely - at least until you know for sure its right for you. Rice, potato and for possibly quinoa are considered ok for children so it would be fairly possible to do evening meals grain free. How old are your children?

OP posts:
yumyumpoppycat · 02/11/2014 17:15

ps I am a diet disaster so hopefully some others will post!

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 03/11/2014 10:53

Hello Venti, welcome aboard. :)

Ds and dh have the same meal as me but they have bigger portions and more starches. I have never been overly strict with the children as I wanted them to learn how to make choices and I did not want for them to stand out in the crowd. Ds occasionally enjoys some gluten free pasta/pizza/cake especially with friends.

yumyumpoppycat · 05/11/2014 15:55

Hi Favadi - I saw on the optober thread you have done amazingly v well done. I am back on track eating wise this week and feeling happy Grin I still haven't eaten that grapefruit though Blush
