paleo for weightloss

yumyumpoppycat · 18/06/2014 15:28

Was sorting out some books to take back to the library and found Chris Kresser's your personal paleo Diet. It pretty much fell open on the weight loss page - seemed to be a sign! Soooo enough messing around and procrastination, on the wagon off the wagon, I just need to get my head down and just plow on and lose weight....

Is anyone up for doing paleo or a similar diet with a focus on weightloss?

These are the additional rules, or I guess a good starting point before adding in usual paleo 'rules' :
Eat more protein
Don't snack
Go dairy free
Reduce calorie density by eating more veg
Eat all food within an 8 hour window

and one more for me - in bed by 11.

Will update but be great if others join in!

Oh well done too! Hope you feel better, you are doing so well.

I have had headaches on and off but overall I am probably eating too many carbs for ketosis but I am fine with that, don't think it agrees with me either! Felt pretty non head-achey today which is weird because I skipped breakfast as working, and I have only had herbal tea for drinks Confused Had salmon salad for lunch and delicious chicken and avacado salad for dinner (I may also have snaffled a few of dcs leftover chunky chips )! Work again tomorrow so may skip breakfast again but will try not to do that too often.

What about having a few berries favadi?

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 12/09/2014 09:47

You'll be surprised how many carbs you can have and still being in ketosis (mild). Mark S reckons up to150g if you're active, especially if you leave a window of at least 8hr without eating at night time. I know when I shift from mild to deeper and deeper ketosis because I can't quench my thirst (yesterday I drank 6L of water, plus hot drinks).
I miss avocado and chips (swede ones)! Next week I have free reins, still virtually no fat but, I can cook what I want, yippee!

FavadiCacao · 12/09/2014 09:51

Berries, good idea! I have a few frozen ones that will keeep the rest of the fruit salad cooler in the lunch box. I had a grapefruit, instead of half as I don't bread (no egg this morning but ey ho), so I feel better. :)

yumyumpoppycat · 13/09/2014 12:58

How are you doing favadi? Roll on next week Grin

I have decided to have a lovely relaxed weekend, currently grilling some gluten free sausages. Had a family meal out last night so had some wine and a taste of desert. Had gained a lb this morning but lost more than a lb the day before so pretty much the same as when I last posted so not so bad Wink. Strict again on monday!

Well my next week started last night! Grin
On SMD I have two weeks 'on' and two weeks 'off'. On the weeks off, I'm allowed to choose my own menu and drink alcohol. So I had some wine last night and a cooked breakfast this morning. :)
I'm really chuffed beacause I'm just over 1kg away from my original target (difficult to really know with silly old scales) but I'm going to try to lose the further 5kg the new scales told me. :)
I'm also very impressed, over the moon, with the results from the T.A. exercises. The flab on my arms is visibly less (1 inch less!); it's so strange because my biceps look flatter and the tricepts tighter. My lower tummy is getting flatter! There is still a visible overhang but it's not hanging as low (if that makes sense!). I feel altogether more stretchy and not a twinge in sight from my back. Grin
The TA mat dvd only arrived this morning and I'm already looking forward to ordering and getting into the 'perfect design' ones.

Have a lovely weekend.:)

yumyumpoppycat · 14/09/2014 12:04

Well done so close to target you must be looking fab Grin

Made coconut flour and milk yest out of desiccated coconut (tried to turn coconut milk into yog... total flop so might try and get banana for a smoothie). Used the flour to make brownies today...nice and cakey but a bit too bitter, I had a latte from my tassimo and my tummy hurts a bit now ... will still prob do the same next weekend though Wink

Just need to start exercising now...loving the idea of an inch of fat off arms!

might look out for a grapefruit for tomorrow shudder had a strawberry today and it was tooth tingling sweet!

FavadiCacao · 15/09/2014 09:23

I'm glad you've enjoyed your coffee.
For some strange reason, chocolate and coconut flour mixture requires more sweetness than almond and chocolate but adding more honey just tastes of honey. Serving it with a bit of cream helps cut through the bitterness and one of these days I might even get round to try adding a banana instead of extra honey.

It feels good to be back in my size10 jeans but the new scales taught me that I have a least another 5-6 kgs before I can fit back into some of my old vintage size 10 (which are back in fashion).

yumyumpoppycat · 15/09/2014 18:58

Size 10 vintage jeans must be tiny Grin My mum was looking at an old top of mine from when i was around 20 and she thinks my 3 yo wouldn't even fit in it!

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 16/09/2014 10:50

Grin Sizes have certainly changed. I have a range of size 10s spanning a few decades, some were my mum's that got back into fashion in my time. Interestingly, I think the shape of clothing has changed more than sizes. I remember struggling to find clothes to fit me because I had a tiny waist but big hips; I was pretty much stuck with A line or bias cut skirts, until the really high waisted and flaired at the thigh trousers came in. In the last 15 years or so it has been easier, clothes are more generous in the thigh, even when the waist or hips might not be. I'm curious to put side to side my size 10 cigarette line trousers with a pair in the shops. I have bought a pair of 12s and they are showing signs of old templates being used: they are perfect on the legs and hips but enourmous at the waist (I can fit more than a hand at 90* to the body at the waist!).

I am also noticing different diets giving me diffent body shapes. From the records I kept from my big weight loss, my legs and hips were much smaller at this weight than they are now but my waist and under bust were considerably bigger. Last time I was losing weight on lower carbs and high fat, this time on higher carbs, high protein and very low fat (calories roughly the same).

yumyumpoppycat · 16/09/2014 11:37

Ooh all very interesting, I had the same problem as you with clothes being baggy around the waist and yes it hasn't been a problem as much lately!

Interesting about the different diets affecting body shape - my boobs always disappear when I low carb which isn't necc what I am hoping to achieve! Wonder if it is a hormonal thing, similar to how women crave carbs/ choc around period?

OP posts:
yumyumpoppycat · 16/09/2014 14:38

Have lost 10lbs now over 2 weeks of low/no dairy, fruit, eggs, gluten, caffeine and legumes. 33 more lbs to go.

Did my 10 min solution HIIT dvd again, did the legs and bum routine and all bar the last exercise were much easier than the last routine I tried {phew} .

Going to have a sneaky caramel green tea now!

Do you think its worth body brushing or anything like that to help with skin?

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 17/09/2014 20:22

Wooho, that is fantastic. Grin

Are you enjoying the exercises? I am really enjoying mine.

I have never done body brushing but I use a few homemade scrubs/facial masks. Lemon juice and sugar paste is great as hands, elbows and feet scrub.
Pineapple is a brilliant facial and body 'peel'; I just rub the flesh left inside the peel, leave until dry (no more than 5 mins as very strong) and wash off. Other than that I use homemade olive oil soap and coconut oil or argan oil.

yumyumpoppycat · 22/09/2014 10:26

Wow favadi homemade soap sounds lovely. I have quite red splotchy sensitive skin so pineapple might be too astringent or whatever the term is, but loving how non wasteful it is to use the skin Grin

I have had a reaallly bad cold, almost flu really, over the last few days {dons croaky phoning in sick voice, coughs pathetically} and in order to get through a long meeting at work I bought lots of lozenges, lemsip etc from poun' lan' and that kick started a misadventure with a packet of strawberry bon bons that have been lurking in the cupboard for months so today I have a mouth of sore patches and a lb gained...

Oh well feeling positive about getting back to slightly more healthiness today so not the end of the world.

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 22/09/2014 15:15

Flowers I hope you get better soon. I know these mints or xylitol aren't 100% Paleo but they are really soothing. I buy them at my local independent health store or in Waitrose, they expensive (~£1.50/packet) but last so much longer than any other lozenge; xylitol is available in any supermarket and adding it to lemon juice is also very soothing for the throat; or you could try melting some xylitol in your mouth and swish for a few minutes to heal the sore patches.

I enjoyed going to my event but it has caught up with me this morning (up almost 1kg). I bought a pair of motivational skinny jeans to help me along. :)

yumyumpoppycat · 22/09/2014 15:26

Thanks fav those mints look great Smile

Glad you had a good time - which skinnies did you get. I got 2 pairs of my favourite new look jeggings the other day Blush so comfy though and look great... at least I think so Hmm

FavadiCacao · 22/09/2014 17:31

Well, I fell in love with a pair of Mint Velvet and another from Mango (which I can't find online) but both were a tinsy bit tight on the waist or too big, so I'll have to lose a bit more weight! That's motivation! :) Nothing was right for my body shape in Next, H&M or Zara...I found an interim pair in Matalan similar to these but they cling to the lower leg as well and they are possibly higher waist. Both my leather jackets and my ankle boots look good with them (I am still happy to wear long boots as well) and I have plenty of tops and blouses. Given the capes and block colours, I might just pick some needles up and knit the Arlequin swing (front page), The Metro and the Mitre Vee from this book
I've never even thought to look in New Look, despite the fact it would be one of the first shops my daughter and I would go to, if we are shopping for her! Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 22/09/2014 22:22

Wow that all sounds lovely and the temporary jeans look great. I really want to find some nice ankle boots.

Funny about New Look esp as I usually buy clothes for my daughters in H&M Grin I aspire to Mango and Zara but I think I am too short and plump!

OP posts:
yumyumpoppycat · 22/09/2014 22:36

These have similar zips to the ones you like but are shiny www.newlook.com/shop/womens/jeans/parisan-black-zip-pocket-coated-skinny-jeans-_319701701

and these are a quite similar colour to the ones you like but less edgy www.newlook.com/shop/womens/jeans/anita-and-green-dark-blue-zip-front-skinny-jeans-_323701041

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 23/09/2014 12:42

I really like those jeans.Grin The second pair seems to be more generous on the hips, always good for me, as I've been blessed with an ample gift in the hips dept.!

I bought a pair of Nabuck, lace-up, fleece lined, foldable rim Bussola ankle boots a couple of years ago and come winter they are glued to my feet! Despite the 6.5 cm heel I can walk for miles in them; I'm considering another pair or two but I'll wait for the new styles to come in.

yumyumpoppycat · 23/09/2014 13:44

That's the ultimate triumph shoes that look good and are fairly comfy! Think I am going to keep an eye out for black friday on amazon as I got a pair of boots on there last year, my problem is my boots wear down in a funny way on the heel and become uncomfortable but I think that may be a sign I need to spend more on them .... I am happy to go with cheap fashion but dp would encourage me to buy a really decent pair so I have no excuse not to!

Are you back to hardcore scarsdale or more relaxed now?

OP posts:
FavadiCacao · 23/09/2014 16:03

It's the Italian in me! Grin Well fitted shoes are imprinted in you since birth! Most good quality shoes have lasted me well into being back into fashion again. (dd might have 'borrowed' a few) :)

FavadiCacao · 23/09/2014 16:13

I'm still on the Scarsedale 'two weeks off', enjoying a little more fat and a little less rigidity and a lot more red meat and some real cheese!. Next week it's back 'two weeks on'...Oh Joy! Grin

FavadiCacao · 23/09/2014 16:28

Sorry about the drip feed! Silly computer keeps freezing. Angry
How are you doing? Is your cold better? Are the Carb cravings gone?

yumyumpoppycat · 23/09/2014 19:46

I am reading the magic of tidying book that has been on active threads this week. I think only buying clothes I love whether cheap or expensive should be my new game plan Grin

Carb cravings pretty much gone Grin I had a latte with friends but apart from that I have mainly had smoothies today. The one I made this afternoon had a small red pepper from my plant; coconut oil, small avacado, semi frozen mango, few strawberries, couple of grapes, sliced carrot, stick of celery, spinach, corriander, and a few macadmia nuts, also some natural yog but I wish I had left that out tbh. I kind of felt like some of the ingredients would have been nicer out of a smoothie but hopefully it has done me some good Hmm I feel a bit poorly and lackluster, more sleep would prob sort me out more than food tbh as my girls both crept into my bed last night on a shift rotation grr.

Enjoy the rest of your relaxed week Grin
