paleo for weightloss

yumyumpoppycat · 18/06/2014 15:28

Was sorting out some books to take back to the library and found Chris Kresser's your personal paleo Diet. It pretty much fell open on the weight loss page - seemed to be a sign! Soooo enough messing around and procrastination, on the wagon off the wagon, I just need to get my head down and just plow on and lose weight....

Is anyone up for doing paleo or a similar diet with a focus on weightloss?

These are the additional rules, or I guess a good starting point before adding in usual paleo 'rules' :
Eat more protein
Don't snack
Go dairy free
Reduce calorie density by eating more veg
Eat all food within an 8 hour window

and one more for me - in bed by 11.

Will update but be great if others join in!

I like the sound of the muesli too. Can someone explain the theory behind the eating window thing please?

yumyumpoppycat · 21/06/2014 18:01

Cindy I will link another time, but a bit on eating window - it basically involves setting a time limit of 8 - 10 hours during which you eat your meals. The rest of the 16 -14 hours your body is fasting. For instance you could have breakfast at 10.00 am and finish the eating window with dinner at 6.00 pm, then eat nothing until you break the fast again at 10.00 am the following day.

It can be really helpful for people who over graze, I often find I'm not hungry in the morning and only start wanting to graze after breakfast.

It's a version of intermittent fasting. IF is being researched a lot at the moment in relation to certain illness, obesity and anti ageing. I find on busy days if I skip breakfast i function just as well if not better than if I had had breakfast and obviously that is a saving of around 400 calories.

If you constrict the time when you can eat you in theory:

  • give you your body a chance to work on cell repair rather than digestion *reduce calories eaten as less opportunity to eat! *supposedly good for anti ageing and has health benefits *May help with certain types of diabetes

That's really interesting, more to research!

Well I'm off out to dinner tonight for the first time under the new rules. Wish me luck! I've chosen the restaurant, so plan tom yum and steamed salmon with some stir fried veg. I may have one glass of wine.
Good news is I'm wearing the dress I bought a month ago which kicked this whole thing off because it looked like a sausage skin, and now it looks fab even if I do say so myself!

yumyumpoppycat · 21/06/2014 19:58

Sorry that Should have been charlie not cindy! Oooh your evening sounds gawgous enjoy!

Hmm can't find a recent article on eating windows, everything seems to be from 2012, does anyone know if there is anything new on this? Confused

This blog might be interesting, only had a quick look so far rockyourhormones.com/easily-create-balanced-meal-rockyourplate/

Found I like raw red pepper. Trying different things to see which I will eat. Never been very good with eating veg.

Have any of you watched Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead? It is on Netflix. They did a juicing diet, lost loads.

Is juicing food better than eating it?

CharlieSierra · 22/06/2014 20:51

I just made cauliflower rice. It was yum!

My one glass of wine turned into two last night but otherwise stuck with the programme.

yumyumpoppycat · 23/06/2014 10:43

Sooo stayed up way too late last night and dd woke up at 5am (renewed respect for those of you getting up so early) so a milky tea was all that could cut it this morning (on milky coffee no 2 now Blush ). have also had an apple and some fried bacon and tomato. Not amazingly low carb but I have stayed away from the wheaty stuff which is the main challenge for me.

Charlie - i really need to buy some cauliflower ... it is really nice and I don't know why its not a staple in our house. Makes a yumola shepheards pie topping blitzed with cream and chopped bacon (I can't find a link but similar to this www.ditchthecarbs.com/2014/05/07/low-carb-shepherds-pie-cauliflower-mash/ )

Cindy thats great if you find some new veg you like, I am pretty much the same tbh, broccoli is one of may favorites though and chopped raw carrots are ok. I am not sure about juicing but Green smoothies are a really good way to boost veg intake. Think I am going to try and find some new veg to try this week too.

I have bought a red pepper plant from waitrose for £3, its really pretty with loads of tiny green buds and white flowers... fingers crossed i will actually get some red peppers out of it!

oh sorry I weighed myself and am 1 and a half lbs down from fri. Waist is 96 cm

OP posts:
CharlieSierra · 23/06/2014 13:26

wow, that shepherd's pie looks amazing, definitely going to try that one.

I have some chicken livers for tonight, just need to figure out how to make a sauce.

Cindy, I think smoothies rather than juice if you can - then you get the whole fruit including the fibre and pulp. I have green smoothies most days for breakfast when i'm going into the office to work and they keep me full till lunch along with a few almonds.

HearMyRoar · 23/06/2014 19:03

Well, I've had stomach bug for the last couple of days so hardly eaten anything except a few slices of toast and some carrot sticks.

I think the problem with juice is that it removes all the good fibre so you are basically left with sugar.

yumyumpoppycat · 23/06/2014 20:52

Hope you feel better hear my raw, tummy bugs are the worst.

Charlie how did the chicken livers go, I think they are a bit of a marmite food, not my favourite tbh so really interested in a sauce that hides enhances their flavour Grin

Not eaten anything too exciting had a picnic tea in the park with the children so bits and bobs rather than a proper meal

Hope everyone else doing well

OP posts:
CharlieSierra · 23/06/2014 21:14

Hmm, don't think we'll be having them every week Grin. They were ok, I don't mind liver, I used a finely chopped onion, leek, some thyme, chicken stock and a bit of cream. I think I would have preferred something a bit more robust, maybe some sherry or wine to deglaze the pan might have been better.

Cindy34 · 24/06/2014 00:03

4lb down. Must get into a routine of only doing weigh once a week, as did it a couple of days ago and I was up, so I guess it changes as body gets used to the change.

Cindy34 · 24/06/2014 00:06

Went shopping, KitKats on offer, brought some. Eaten none.

Smoothies sound good. What nice Green ones? I like fruit smoothies but not tried veg!

CharlieSierra · 24/06/2014 06:17

In my smoothies I start with 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, then add two big handfuls of greens. You need to rotate your greens for reasons I don't have time to go into now, but start with spinach because it's soft and after you add some fruit you pretty much can't taste it. It's the recommended 'starter' green. Blend greens first, then add some fruit. If you use a small banana it will dominate, if you use red berries it will still taste lovely but the colour will be more slurry brown than green. Half a mango or a peach is nice, pears make it creamy, your taste. I sometimes use half an avocado or scoop of ground flax seeds and I pretty much always add a ripe kiwi as the are amazing for 'digestive transit'. If you google you will find good recipes, I'll try to link later but have a long drive to a meeting now.

CharlieSierra · 24/06/2014 22:12

Here are some good recipes and the info about rotating your greens etc

yumyumpoppycat · 24/06/2014 22:59

That smoothie website looks interesting Smile

Well done on kitkat willpower!

I am a bit confused, I had a splodgy rash last year which I got when doing paleo. It started on my ankles and worked up my legs, there were a few patches on my waist too eventually. I tried cutting eggs, nuts and nightshades but it still got worse. Anyway I have found the start of that rash again this morning on my feet and ankles. I thought strong steroid cream for eczema cleared it last time but thinking about it I had already got disillusioned and a bit cheaty/ carby with my diet so now wondering if it's going too low carb that caused it? Don't want it to get worse, so had some bread today but I find once I start on bread I can't stop, so that's not really the answer. Think I will have porridge for breakfast for the rest of the week and try and eat more veg and see if that helps.

That is strange yumyum. I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and everything I've read about diet would lead me to think that eating grains couldn't be a positive thing. I will be really interested to know how you go.

yumyumpoppycat · 25/06/2014 09:39

Yes Charlie S. it is weird. I think psoriasis is supposed to improve on paleo so fingers crossed should be fine for you. I think its either something I am eating more of that causes it or else some kind of stress reaction to lowering carbs bjjcaveman.com/2013/05/09/prurigo-pigmentosa-a-ketosis-associated-ras Confused. It matches up a lot more with symptoms of discoid eczema tbh, bit weird that I have only had this when trying paleo though,

I had porridge and cherries this morning and tiny blob of maple syrup which was quite nice actually and a change from eggs!

HearMyRoar · 25/06/2014 11:18

Mmmm.. that smoothie looks delicious! Aldi do really cheap frozen fruit so I might have to get some spinach and have a go. Summer smoothies all round, I just know DD will love them :)

That's very odd about the rash yumyum. Have you tried doing a food diary to see if you can work out what might be the cause? Though, as you say it might just be the general shock of going low carb and withdrawals. I found when I last gave up sugar I got all sorts of odd side effects. Mainly really bad back ache around week 2. I was just starting to think I had magically avoided it this time but it has just hit me today, argh. But I know now that if I plough on through it will pass so am trying not to let it get to me.

I was really impressed with DH yesterday as he cooked dinner and instead of his usual carby staples he made a really lovely slow cooked chicken casserole with loads of veg. Perfectly paleo! Bless him, he does make an effort for me :o

yumyumpoppycat · 26/06/2014 09:10

Hear my roar, sounds like your dh is a good'un! Think your right about ploughing on.... rash seems to be fading now I'm having more carbs so if it is that I can still do everything on my list apart from restricted eating windows. So more veg, more protein, more sleep and pos out with dairy. My fridge is unusually full of veg, so I might try a smoothie later. Sports day now and need to so play school run...

Cindy34 · 26/06/2014 12:15

Gone off the rails... Last two days I have had cake!

Must try harder, must resist cake.

Positives though:
I am now eating more fruit and veg than I was before.
I am now drinking water and liking it.
I am now thinking about what I put in my mouth.

yumyumpoppycat · 26/06/2014 14:03

Cindy cake happens Grin ... sounds like you are doing really well and not off the rails at all, if you were to stop 'paleo' but keep all those changes that would be amazing.

Actually i had a snickers bar while dd was at playschool then a cappuccino at a cafe with dd, I felt like i was having palpitations afterwards, really incredibly shit, I had a ten minute sleep on the sofa while dd was watching doc mcstuffins so racking up the good mother points here! Anyway feeling more normal now as have eaten some proper food, I mashed up a leftover sweetpotato with leftover cauliflower shepherds pie and fried it .... like dogs r us said about eggs and fruit it sounds yuk but was v nice.

Going to be a better mummy now and take dd2 in the garden to help me do some weeding!

I just made a satay chicken stir fry based on this www.paleocupboard.com/chicken-skewers-with-satay-sauce.html

I LOVE this diet!
