'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

I went shopping this evening and have stocked up on meat, fish, salad, olives, celery, cream cheese, slice cheese, cucumber and basically things that I can stuff in a pot and snack on when I am out and about.

Ive got eggs for breakfast ; scrambled or fritatta style, some ham and cream cheese, lunch will be homemade soups/salad

I am organised, Im ready, Im not looking forward to the shakes when my sugar levels drop but I have water, coffee, knitting and lots to keep me busy next week.

fizzly · 11/01/2014 22:53

Evening all. Just checking in. Day 6 in fizzly's LC House and going well for me, but DH had a bit of a dip with some booze and pastry. A 'try harder' sticker for him I think.

B: 2 boiled eggs
L: 2 black farmer sausages with broccoli and red cabbage
D: omelette with broccoli, kale, asparagus. Served with mayo.

very eggy - was intending to have salmon this evening and ended up eating alone so thought I'd do something a bit more basic.

I need some advice for next weekend. I've got a hen do, which starts with afternoon tea at a posh hotel. Obviously EVERYTHING will be carby/sweet - sandwiches, cakes etc. After that there's a few hours off consumption and then a meal and lots of drinking out. I can manage the evening portion - having LC'd before I'm quite good at picking and choosing from a menu and I'll keep a serious lid on my drinking, but I'm really worried about the afternoon tea. Do I just jack LCing in for a day, or be a massive spoilsport and avoid all the food. Of course I've already had to pay my share, so if I don't eat anything it's a Very expensive day indeed. There really is no way round this is there????

CointreauVersial · 11/01/2014 23:01

Well, I've enjoyed the "soft" start and am just limbering up ready for "hardcore" next week.

I've spent this week polishing off Christmas treats which I didn't want to waste (pudding wine, chocs etc), but have given up the starchy stuff (spuds, bread, pasta, cake etc). As a result, I lost 3 pounds straight away. My colleagues made short work of my Christmas Stollen.

I'm still eating greek yogurt/fruit/nuts for breakfast - fine for maintenance, but this will have to go next week. I might bake some Oopsie Rolls tomorrow, if I can find the recipe.

Dinner tonight was pizza chicken (flattened chicken breasts, into the oven for 20 minutes, then top with a spoonful of salsa and slices of mozzarella and bake again to melt/brown) with salad and coleslaw.

And I've started running again. It makes such a difference to my feeling of wellbeing.

wickedfairy · 11/01/2014 23:27

I have been doing this too and have lost about 4lbs, so very pleased! Need to be slightly more strict but that will happen tomorrow!

Looking forward to hardcore I need to lose a stone and a half - I have a wedding mid Feb, so as much as possible by then. Thanks to BIWI and everyone else off the direction and tips!

I like coffee but usually take milk. What kind of cream do I buy to put in coffee instead? Double or single or another kind?

BIWI · 11/01/2014 23:29

ElBombero - nuts are a great snack. However, they can very quickly become very carby.

Bootcamp is meant to be a sharp, cold shock! And you are supposed to be getting your carbs from veg and salad.

OP posts:
ElBombero · 11/01/2014 23:36

Thanks just thinking of breakfasts. I'm allergic to egg so thinking a 9-10 almonds in morning might be a brekky alternative.do not have to cook anything with DD aged 2 n DS 4 months to cook till about 10 after they are fed n dressed x

Gerrythetootallgiraffeswife · 12/01/2014 08:28

Well last night I may or may not have messed up, difficult to tell because we had a curry. I had no rice/bread/potatoes/popadums/bhajis or anything else obviously carby, but it just wasn't clear from the menu what else was ok, and we're a 'stick it all in the middle and have a bit of everything' kind of family. I tried to stick to the less sweet options, but they were quite spicy, so had a bit of korma/tikka to calm things down. Trying to tell myself that most of the sweetness will have come from almonds/coconut, so at least bc light friendly, but in reality I'm sure there must have been sugar. Also had one small glass of red...

But, onwards and upwards, today's plan is late breakfast of eggs and bacon then early dinner of roast chicken smothered in butter, with loads of buttered veg and some kind of lc gravy that I haven't yet invented. Big sainsburys delivery yesterday too so I'm all set for the week with lots of cheese and butter.

MrsJoeHart · 12/01/2014 08:44

I found last night being a Saturday difficult, we didn't go anywhere but usually watch something with the kids and eat choc, drink wine -a bit if a treat night. I did surccum to a diet vodka & tonic and two squares of dark chocolate, which was bad but I found myself feeling deprived and fed up. I wasn't hungry, we did fajitas so DH and I just had the filling on a bad of lettuce with two cut up cherry tomatoes.

ChesterDrawers · 12/01/2014 09:04

Yesterday was good food wise, but I do seem to have ploughed through about two thirds of a bottle of red. Whoops, hopefully I've got my craving out of my system now.

Food was:

B: eggs in clouds, fried mushrooms
L: cauli chowder from the recipe thread
D: beef stroganoff, swede mash
S: a few olives mid aft

Also had a few coffees with cream so will cut back today to one a day as I had been doing.

Planning on making a curry for tea, but no idea what recipe to use. Chicken is already cooked. Anyone got a good low carb sauce? Was thinking spices and shallots fried together, chick stock and cream. Hmmm...

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 09:06

Wicked single cream is much more carby, so always double (or even clotted Shock) on bootcamp.

Southsearocks · 12/01/2014 09:06

Thanks for all the advice so far. There's a real benefit to sharing online instead of in a RL group as you don't have that dread of the announcement of what you've not lost!

Last night I cooked for friends. I must have used a whole large carton of double cream in the braised cabbage, tarragon chicken and mash. They couldn't finish it. I then served an M&S chocolate cheesecake and didn't succumb so was pleased at that. Had a few glasses of Wine though Grin

I had lunch out with DP and DS (if anybody was in Southampton yesterday and passed a toddler having a complete meltdown, a mum in tears and a forlorn looking dad, that was probably us) and we opted for "Ribs R Us" or something. It was the least carby option so I really hope it didn't do too much damage. I had some coleslaw with it but not one chip! Not one. We will see today....

I've been using Ketostix and I know they are not necessary but I find it reassuring to see that little purple square!

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 09:11

ElBombero I'm not much good with breakfasts I'm afraid. I usually have a slice of cheese and a few little tomatoes or olives if I want something first thing, otherwise just a cup of tea and then brunch.

Gerry Indian cuisine tends to have quite a lot of added sugar, unfortunately. I like to make my own curries and then get sides and naans when I'm not low carbing from the takeaway.

Chester I love the curries I linked to just upthread, but they are slow cooked ones. Don't know whether you could adapt the sauces at all?

wakemeupnow · 12/01/2014 09:11

What a timely thread this is. Am on day 4 and already feeling less hungry.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 09:17

Fizzly I don't know what to say about the tea (sounds lovely Envy!). I'd probably just take the day off and enjoy the food, but it's tricky timing as it's right in the initial bit of bootcamp and you're trying to reboot your system, iyswim. I've got a wedding to go to on the 25th and am just going to muddle through as best I can. Maybe you could eat before you go and just nibble the little dainty sandwiches/scones etc. Then you don't look like a spoilsport but aren't wolfing down loads of it? Or you could eat before you go and then just explain that you're not going to eat the tea... Is it more of a waste to have paid for the food but not eat it, or to eat food that's going to sabotage your weightloss? I don't know! Grin

heliumheart · 12/01/2014 09:18

Crabby - is that your blog you linked to yesterday? Loved the recipes, thank you. I'm thinking of making the Kashmiri curry today but am a bit of a slow cooker novice - if I was using chicken breast how long do you think I should cook it for? I've got four massive part-boned ones that need eating...

I'm feeling better today. After my slightly shameful lunch (and inability to resist the lure of the chip) I skipped dinner. Now I know that is not encouraged on bootcamp, but I wasn't really hungry and having done a bit of intermittent fasting quite like the odd stretch without food.

Am back on it today, have had a ham/cheese omelette with salad so far, have lots to do today but don't have the children this weekend (still find that weird to write down :( ) so it's a quiet-yet-busy vibe.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/01/2014 09:20

My daily check in :)

Have been on Almost Bootcamp this week, has gone really well, except for a couple of slim gins, last one tonight then going cold turkey. Fuckinell Shock

sybilfaulty · 12/01/2014 09:21

We have got friends staying so there has been wine, crisps, all sorts of naughties. I am looking forward to starting tomorrow, but not til we've been out for lunch today. We are doing a 4 mile walk as a warm up, though, and it's lovely and frosty in S london so we will be earning our lunch it seems.

Being prepared - I have plenty of babybel and Pepparami snack size on the go. The Pepparami isn't great as it's so very processed but it's an easy, portable thing to have in case of emergency. I find the time from about 5 to about 8 the worst, as I am cooking the kids their supper and it's a long way from mine. Usually have a snack and a cup of tea to get through. I drink water all day long so the cups of tea (with the merest splash of milk) feel very treaty.

I have a hideous week at work coming up. It will be quite reassuring to have plenty of LC treat food to scoff. I feel a cauliflower cheese coming on. Yum.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 09:24

Helium yes it's my blog. I got all enthusiastic back in the summer and set it up, but it's quite time consuming so I let it slide (along with my waistline Grin) and haven't posted anything for ages. I'm glad you like it, thank you! Smile One of my NY's resolutions is to do more on my main blog (nature photography) as I hadn't been posting much the last few months, so if people find it useful then I'll start doing the food one again too.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 09:25

Rather that's how I'm feeling about no wine!

FourArms · 12/01/2014 09:27

So will tomorrow's weight be our starting point for Bootcamp?

I'm already doing THD so won't need to make all that many changes I hope - my two lattes a week will have to go though!

StuntNun · 12/01/2014 09:31

Bombero what about Greek yoghurt for breakfast (I add double cream and some defrosted frozen berries)? Or ham spread with Philadelphia and rolled up. Or cucumber and celery sticks dipped in Philadelphia. Or leftovers.

Gerry I make low carb gravy from the meat juices, some vegetable cooking water, butter if the meat didn't give off much juices then fast boil to reduce to a more concentrated slightly syrupy consistency. It's very nom. I do the same with anything cooked in the slow cooker rather than using anything to thicken the liquid.

heliumheart · 12/01/2014 09:34

Crabby - I have started several blogs but they always end up going by the wayside as life gets in the way. Pesky old life, eh?

This will be my first bootcamp. What's the deal with wine? Is bootcamp for 10 weeks but the first two weeks are stricter in some way? What changes after the first two weeks? The question I am building up to is how long are we meant to be abstemious for?

StuntNun · 12/01/2014 09:46

No wine, or indeed alcohol, for the first two weeks Helium you don't need the calories or the carbs.

I just had a bulletproof rooibos, sorry I can't remember who suggested it. Not actually that bad but a bit too coconutty for me. Still that got my dose of MCTs in for the day. Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 12/01/2014 09:50

Hello

Exciting news! Am wearing a pair of 12 jeans. I did have to sort of fold my post pg stomach into them (tmi) but they are on. This time last week I couldn't do them up, so I am really pleased.

Just after one week too!

I took ds out yesterday for his birthday. These are the things I didn't eat
garlic dough balls
pizza
ice cream
chocolate fudge cake
I am pleased I resisted Smile

teaandthorazine · 12/01/2014 09:51

Have just had a big spoonful of coconut oil and a coffee with cream - am so looking forward to getting back on the wagon again. Just about to do online shop so will fill with plenty of LC goodies. Excited! Grin
