'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Lucy I'm in love with those steaks with the big fat white veins running through them... Too bad they cost so much, but make a lovely treat. :)

I'd think the mayo is fine, in that you're unlikely to be eating it in huge quantities anyway. Hellman's Original has 1.5g per 100g. My own pet annoyance in mayos is more the other stuff in them, rather than carbs. Crappy oils and additives. But I've yet to manage to make my own that I'd actually like the taste of, either. :(

BIWI · 11/01/2014 11:16

Here's a recipe for cauliflower pizza It's American, so you will need to translate the cups/work with cup measurements, but it sounds good.

Thanks BIWI, must have a google. Actually now I think about it, I know someone who makes "meatza" when they want pizza - some kind of meaty base from mince or something? I'll badger them for a recipe. :)

LucyVFood · 11/01/2014 11:22

I was about to say that I wasn't sure about the cauliflower pizza BIWI and then remembered that I said exactly the same thing about cauliflower rice and ended up loving it. I've yet to try courgette pasta, but it's on my to-do list.

As for meatza, that sounds fab too Steeleye I guess you could bind it with egg?

CalamityKate · 11/01/2014 11:24

Can someone clear something up please....

I believe we're encouraged to look for things that are less than 5g of carbs per 100g - what about things like Worcestershire sauce which are about 20g per 100g but you only plan to use little shake??

moreyear · 11/01/2014 11:26

Thanks BIWI - unsweetened almond milk is really low in carbs. It depends on the brand but about 1gram per cup. I would really recommend it.

BIWI · 11/01/2014 11:31

CalamityKate - yes, things like Worcestershire sauce are fine. Stock cubes are similarly high in carbs if you look at the carb count per 100g, but you're using small quantities, and usually in a dish for 4-6 people, so actually the carbs that they add to an individual portion are fairly negligible.

However, it's worth knowing that there are carbs in foods like this.

Great thanks BIWI!

All this talk of steak has made me fancy it for tea and someone somewhere mentioned a creamy/Worcestershire sauce-y sauce which sounded lovely....DH is out tonight stuffing his face at a works do so I think me and the kids should have something special too!

BIWI · 11/01/2014 11:39

We're having fillet steak for dinner tonight. Not sure how I'll cook it, but I do have a lovely recipe (somewhere) that uses Dijon mustard and cream.

Might make some swede fondant (Brian Turner was just cooking that on Saturday Kitchen!) to go with it, as well as something green.

I think I'm going to have a go at that cauliflower pizza recipe for lunch as well, as I seem to have two cauliflowers in the fridge!

CalamityKate · 11/01/2014 11:42

Mmmm I used to have a lovely recipe involving whole grain mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cream and something else. And it really was something else! Must try to remember....

CalamityKate · 11/01/2014 11:42

Oooh it had mushrooms in.....

HamstaParadise · 11/01/2014 11:57

I can't believe it's almost the end of week one. I weighed myself this morning and have lost 7lbs Shock but I think that may be because when I weighed on monday morning I had swollen legs from a stupidly long run I did the day before. Still pretty motivating though.

B: chorizo frittata with buttery broccoli, apple tea with coconut oil
L: halloumi and aubergine bake from the recipe thread
D: saltfish fritters with ackee - so excited about this!

CalamityKate · 11/01/2014 12:01

Hamsta! That's brilliant!! Shock Grin

CrabbyWinterBottom · 11/01/2014 12:07

My low carb thing with steak is a creamy mushroomy brandy sauce - chop the mushrooms and cook them in butter/garlic/herbs over a low heat for at least 20-30 mins so that the moisture evaporates off and the flavour concentrates, then as the steak is cooking add a wee dash of brandy then a good slosh of double cream and plenty of black pepper.

I want steak now!

Lighthousekeeping · 11/01/2014 12:07

Right. I start nights Sunday finish Thursday morning. I need to eat before I go to work and it has to be something I can cook tomorrow day. Any suggestions? I have one large chicken, some bacon, frozen cauliflower and broccoli and two bags of spinach. Shall I just roast the chicken and eat it every night? I will take Greek yoghurt to work with some vanilla essence. I have the boxes of water so that's sorted. I only have today to buy some other bits.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 11/01/2014 12:08

Ooh I'm getting quite excited about low carb food now, am going to write a meal plan for the next fortnight!

LucyVFood · 11/01/2014 12:51

Well done Hamsta!

I just had the most glorious salad: spinach, radishes, cucumber, olives, mozzarella, avocado and mayo.

Everything tastes better. Is it just the fat?

ziggiestardust · 11/01/2014 13:10

BIWI thanks for the diagnosis Grin

I do check carbs in sauces etc, I'm not a huge sauce/dressing fan though so as well as picking lower carb options, I'm also using no more than 1.5 tbsp at each meal. I have seen the lc vinaigrette recipe, so I'll try making that tomorrow.

Thanks for the diet coke material; I'll have a look through that later. Took DS and his friend to MacDonald's, and I had a diet coke and only a diet coke as their coffee machine was broken! Normally I'd trough my way through a meal though, but I waited until I got home which is a huge development for me. I probably only have one can a day, but I'll give it up for bootcamp I think. Water is probably better in the long run anyway. I'll get some sparkling water as well; can I have that with slices of lemon/lime? Or will that be a bit carby?

I've given up alcohol since 1st Jan, and plan not to drink until at least Feb when it's my friend's birthday, so at least there's no temptation/pressure until then.

getset · 11/01/2014 13:11

Lighthousekeeping - can you make yourself a vat of soup as well? I imagine it's going to get pretty dull having the same stuff every day!

Mlig · 11/01/2014 13:14

Is there a way of just jumping to the bit where you were up
to before? It's taking me ages to find it now there's so many pages!

I'm getting all set for a big Monday start. I'd planned to cut down slowly my carbs this week but it's just not happened, so I know that this is going to hurt this week, I was thinking though, if carb flu is that bad, would it help to have a slice if bread or something, or would it make it worse? I know I'm overthinking this but one if my kids has just started nursery so I've gone from hardly any exercise to a 4 mile walk every day.

Ruprekt · 11/01/2014 13:18

No to bread Miig. Not worth it.

Drink plenty of water and take some paracetemol if you need to.

I have never had carb flu but I think BIWI recommends salt, salmon and avocado if the flu hits you. SmileSmile

ziggiestardust · 11/01/2014 13:32

Lunch was eggs scrambled in butter, with added book choi and cheese. Had bacon salt sprinkled over the top which is 0g of carbs, sugar and calories, it is delicious and if BIWI thinks it's ok; I'd recommend it to everyone as a good alternative to ketchup and other sugary dressings.

Sipping on water whilst doing the ironing. Going to a friend's later with DS, I'll drink black coffee whilst there.

To the poster who was worried about carb flu; I wouldn't try and minimise. There's no point in prolonging the agony! Plus, it doesn't happen to everyone Smile

BIWI the pork scratchings I mentioned were Hogbites brand, which are 0g of carbs.

MrsHughJarse · 11/01/2014 13:32

thanks biwi you are fab ! avoiding all latte's.......mind you, really so full of 3l water. If nothing else ( and there is sooooo much more) the benefits from this water are immense - I think I must have been a dried up prune before ! Someone at work asked my if I had had " anything done" ! I wasn't sure if to be offended or complimented !

SteeleyeStan · 11/01/2014 13:51

MrsHugh Be complimented! Grin
My neighbour asked me if I'd had a gastric band... I thought it was a bit, um, forward, since we usually just say hello and I don't know her. But then chose to take it as a compliment of noticable weight loss.

CalamityKate · 11/01/2014 14:02

I've never been a fan of yogurt but would occasionally buy some low fat, fruity ones when dieting. They invariably ended up wasted.

Just bought some FF Onken and had a couple of dessertspoonsful as a sort of pudding after salad, mayo and Parmesan. OMG it was delicious!! Either full fat plain yogurt is sweeter than low fat or my tastes are changing? It tasted sweeter than low fat fruit yogurt!
