I am starting properly on Tuesday - Bootcamp MAX, I need it, so I'll join in on the 'Soft start' thread for the chat. I have a feeling that I may have carb flu, which will time in nicely with some PMT/ Feed Me Now Type Hunger - fun fun fun. but from a blood sugar perspective I need to crack on and stop being a carby twat. Can I join in too?

Am completely new to low carbing - but, seeing as how I've always had an extra 3 stones (like since birth. Not of my kids, my own actual birth) and have PCOS, well, it's got to be worth a shot.

However, I am utterly confused - which, I suspect is normal seeing as how I have a long history of believing "low fat". Which, clearly, hasn't worked for me seeing as how I've been trying to follow it for 25 years and yet, mysteriously, I remain enormous and hoover up sugar.

So, see when you bootcamp - do you swap meal plans to help newbies figure it out? I am clueless. I need both a stick and a hand to hold.

Me too please. Absolutely the best I have ever felt was on basically Dr Atkins for 3 years. I went off and have piled on so much weight. I am a bit concerned with the time involved with lowcarb (cooking etc)as I have a 3 year old and a one year old but I am hoping this might keep me focused.

gussie, it will get less confusing. It is basically high good fat. So for example I might have pork belly with peppers as one meal with spinach with a lot of butter on top. (It is not high processed fats) And it is all natural foods, not processed foods. In a sense it's normal eating rather than any foods with ingredients on the side. It's how people have always eaten rather than in the last few hundred years with manufactured products.

Read up on it Gussie but the basic theory is that carbohydrates cause your body to release insulin and insulin is the hormone that tells your body to store fat. My cutting carbs to below 50-100 grams a day your body stops producing so much insulin which stops your body from storing fat. By eating a high fat diet you feel full (satiated) so you actually consume less calories and your body uses its own fat stores to make up the difference, hence you lose weight.

The main difference between low calorie and low carb is that when you reduce calorie intake your metabolism slows down. There was a study where they reduced calorie intake by 25% but the participants' metabolisms dropped by 40% so they didn't lose much weight. A low carb diet keeps your metabolism at the same rate so the effect of reducing calorie intake is weight loss.

You can maintain or gain weight on a low carb diet if you eat enough but it is much more difficult. I seem to remember an article where a guy was eating 5000 calories a day on a low carb diet and he only gained a small amount of weight.

Is quinoa on the allowed list?

everything i've found suggests that quinoa is anywhere between 25-45g carbs per 100g (varies cooked vs. uncooked), so too high in carbs for bootcamp, sorry

also pulses are too high for bootcamp

I signed up ages ago but then ignored all the Rules! BUT..... I did it off my own bat for 2 weeks at the start of December and lost 7lbs! I was delighted! Unfortunately I've put it all on again, but I'm not surprised as I've been enjoying myself, so I'm starting again. It will be harder than before as himself's back in the house so I'm not just cooking for me, but he wants to lose weight as well so perhaps we'll just do it together anyway.

I'm hoping to do the diet with DH so we'll be able to support each other. I'll try and sign him up to mumsnet later. Is that allowed?! (I don't usually like doing diets with him because he loses so much faster! Damn men )
