Hope you all had a lovely Christmas!

This is just to let you know that the next low carb Bootcamp will be starting on Monday 13 January. As before, it will last for 10 weeks, with the first two weeks being the strictest.

Thanks FourArms, that's great!

CointreauVersial · 04/01/2014 12:13

Blimey, BIWI, the New Year has brought a lot of people out of the woodwork!

You are going to need one big spreadsheet.

thenightsky · 04/01/2014 12:21

FourArms step away from the carrots! I suspect your crunchy mix is way too carby for bootcamp (certainly the first 2 weeks). 9 carbs in your yoghurt is way, way too high.

Sorry Sad

caramelwaffle · 04/01/2014 12:28

I'm back in. Again.

FourArms · 04/01/2014 12:52

Thank TNS. I think I'm going to buy a bag of iceberg lettuce and add more red cabbage to it which should make it OK overall?

I'll try the total that BIWI recommends too or give up the NLY completely.

daisychicken · 04/01/2014 13:25

Lidl's Greek yog is more like a thinner yoghurt whereas the Total Greek yog is very thick like a very thick double cream...both taste good but I prefer Lidl's version and it's cheaper!

Lidl is very good for low carbers - meat is cheap but good quality, cheeses, cream, butter, oils, veg/salads and nuts are all reasonably priced

StuntNun · 04/01/2014 14:42

Kefy the current consensus on high levels of saturated fat (in the context of a low carb diet) is that increases your HDL (which is the 'good' lipoprotein) and it changes your LDL (the 'bad' one) from the dangerous small dense LDL to the large buoyant LDL which are not associated with cardiovascular risk.

Unfortunately cholesterol testing is a bit of a blunt tool to assess cardiovascular risk. Cholesterol testing is a cheap test to run but the results can be difficult to interpret. High LDL levels are bad but the LDL test doesn't differentiate the small dense and the large buoyant LDL so two people with the same LDL level could have very different risks. Also the ratios between the different tests are important so the ratio between your HDL and LDL is much more informative than the absolute levels of each.

whodunnit · 04/01/2014 15:33

Just weighed myself n i have gained 4 pounds over xmas. Could be worse. Twas the xmas cake wot dunnit, gov. And the baklava. Roll on 13 Jan.....

CustardoPaidforIDSsYFronts · 04/01/2014 15:43

4lbs is really good

I put on 8lbs - however i was already up by 3lbs from my holiday - have lost 3lbs as i started LCing thursday - so just 8lbs to go then

[ i have had no beer this weekend :( )

bigkidsdidit · 04/01/2014 15:54

I put on 3kilos which is 7lb really. But that's off he wagon since beginning of december - I had hen parties, weddings, work nights out, work lunches, Christmas...

Really excited to be back on it.

I am going to remove myself from te spreadsheet though, I am back at work on Monday after mat leave and don't want to have something else to think about, something else I need to do. I will lurk though when I get a chance. Good lk everyone!

Kefybaby · 04/01/2014 16:05

Thanks a lot, Laura and Stunt!

ChesterDrawers · 04/01/2014 16:09

I've just bought some orange essence from Waitrose - ours is only little and they didn't have the vanilla powder I was looking for. It's 80% rapeseed oil and 20% orange oil, nothing else added. Is this ok to stick in my Greek yogurt and double cream?

FourArms · 04/01/2014 16:25

Thanks for the info re yoghurt daisychicken

I went to Tesco and they only had the large tubs of Total full fat for £2.50 when my nice Yeo Valley was 2 for £2.50. So I bought two of them.

I'm going to try to make my own yoghurt - is this advisable for low carbing? No idea how I'd work it out?

BerylStreep · 04/01/2014 17:31

I put on 5kg over Christmas. I'm pretty sure that's a record.

Hence the need to start ASAP rather than wait for13th. Must go and do some waist measurements.

Bugsylugs · 04/01/2014 17:50

Hi I would love to be added if someone can add me I am a technophobe . Have done a mix of low GI and Harcombe in the past, from what I have read this is a step beyond. Have one of the recommended books arriving tomorrow very excited.
Can someone also link to the list of veg that can be eaten in boot camp as the only way it will work for me is if I can menu plan in advance.
Also if anyone has the muffin recipe with sausage and bacon done in a 'tray' that would be fab.
Thanks

3 stone to lose for me.

From IPD - egg and sausage muffins:

455 sausages (or sausage meat, to prevent faffing with skins)
groundnut oil
1 medium sized onion (optional)
12 eggs
120ml double cream
120ml water
sea salt
170g grated cheddar cheese

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees and oil a 12 cup muffin tray (or small lasagne dish as per poster below)
  1. Remove sausages from their skins and fry in a little oil until browned (with onions if you like - nice caramelised). Divide sausage meat equally between muffin cups (or place on bottom of dish if doing it that way).
  1. Whisk together the eggs, cream, water and salt. Pour over sausage meat and top with cheese.
  1. Bake for 20 minutes on the top shelf until golden and fluffy. Allow to cool slightly before removing from tray.

Fourarms Total yog is expensive, the lidl version is the equivalent of 2 pots of Total for about cost of 1 pot (off the top of my head!) so cheaper.
I used to make my own yoghurt but I haven't figured out how to work out the carb count - mine was just UHT whole milk (don't need to scald) plus a spoonful of starter (pl yog) and put into the easiyo flask (got it half price). You can buy easiyo Greek yoghurt sachets and a google brings up 6.7g/100g once made..

Just done another google... If I take my homemade yog and strain it then I'd get Greek yoghurt as it's yoghurt that's had the whey drained off, so in theory... as I don't add sugars etc then my Greek yog should be just as low in carbs as Total or Lidl's versions.... Confused BIWI any thoughts?

heliumheart · 04/01/2014 20:18

Me too. I have had a monumentally SHITE year last year, separating and going through divorce from unbelievably bonkers ex. Have put on 2.5 stone Shock - have about 4.5 in total to lose. I'm worrying about first of all losing it, and secondly reading all the stuff there is out there about how dieting doesn't work and you just put it all back on anyway. This has certainly been true for me before - I have lost 4st before low-carbing, and became a massive advocate/fan. I DEFINITELY feel better eating this way. I then had twins in late 2009 and lost another 4st doing Dukan. Lost that far too quickly and doing very little exercise. Determined that THIS TIME IT HAS TO BE IT but also fretting that I'm fooling myself, etc etc. I really do think I will need proper counselling once I get close to my 'natural' healthy weight, because it never feels stable for me to be in that state - I feel like I am walking a dangerous tightrope act and that it'll only be a matter of time before life throws me off course.

Anyway, for now, trying not to think too much haha, as if and adding myself to the list. I'm sort of starting now, just trying to get in the right frame of mind. Ordered a classic low carb supermarket delivery today, stacked high with veg, meat, fish, double cream, cheese, etc. Am going to try and do without nuts because they stall me.

Found this:

A cup of whole milk has 11.7 grams of carbohydrates. Turn that whole milk into keifir and the carb count drops to 9 grams. A greek yogurt made of the same cup of milk will be 6 carbohydrates. Cultured milk products undergo fermentation and that fermentation eats up the milk sugars.

Thanks berylstreep, sounds great. What does IPD stand for?

GermanGirlinLDN · 04/01/2014 21:22

Hello,

count me in. Was down last year to 169lbs but put on 11lbs back on in December, especially over Christmas. I have now signed up to personal training and I have a three month minimum commitment. Hoping to lose four stone by summer so that I can finally feel confident in a bikini again.
